Alcohol ordinance moves forward in Hoschton
Less than a month after voters approved the measure, an ordinance allowing liquor-by-the-drink and Sunday sales in Hoschton is before the council.
On Monday, the council held the first reading of a proposed alcoholic beverage ordinance that would expand the existing beer and wine ordinance to include distilled spirits and Sunday sales. The council is expected to hold a second reading and adopt the measure in January.
The ordinance would allow liquor-by-the-drink sales of distilled spirits only at restaurants whose gross revenue is at least 60 percent food sales.
Deciding how to verify that sales percentage at restaurants selling alcohol became a divisive issue at this week’s council meeting.
Council member James Keinard said he favored a system that would require restaurants to annually report their gross revenue.
Council member Deborah Donaldson, however, said she preferred a system that would give city officials the ability to inspect such establishments if they are suspected of violating the ordinance.
Council members Donaldson, Jim Jester, Ronald Holcomb and John Schulte favored a motion to adopt the ordinance; Keinard and Richard Green voted in opposition of the proposal.
Last year, the council adopted an ordinance that allows restaurants to sell beer and wine. That measure didn’t require a referendum.
The Hoschton City Council has approved beer and wine permits for two restaurants that have not opened yet. The restaurants Vinny’s N.Y. Pizza and Italian Grill and Los Volcanes are located in the Hoschton Towne Center.
