Library group’s ‘Lunch and Learn’ series to begin next week at Hoschton Depot Local authors, artists to be featured for new series The Friends of the Braselton-West Jackson Library, Inc. will hold a new series called “Lunch and Learn” featuring local authors and artists. The sessions will be held on various Wednesdays, at 11:30 a.m., at the Hoschton Depot on Ga. Hwy. 53. A $3 donation will provide soup, cornbread, sweet tea and dessert. Reservations are requested by contacting Diane Lemaster, at (678) 546-3380, or Bev Adkins, at westjacksonbooks@hotmail.com. The first “Lunch and Learn” session will be held Feb. 9 and will feature Pamela J. Dodd, Jefferson, discussing her book, “The Gift Horse.” Dodd is a former middle and high school teacher with 20 years of experience teaching English. She holds an undergraduate degree in English from Piedmont College and a master’s degree in English education from North Georgia College and State University. She has been a guest speaker at various civic clubs in the area and has grown up in a family of storytellers. “The Gift Horse” is her debut novel and will be available at the Braselton Library for $16. The novel is set in the deep South and introduces 17-year-old Angie Donalson, a waif who is kidnapped by a ruthless team working for an eccentric electronics tycoon. “I put my years of teaching all those teenagers to work, creating a realistic character, then putting her in a surreal situation,” Dodd said. “Readers tell me that ‘The Gift Horse’ is suspenseful with a plot that keeps them guessing right until the end.” “The Gift Horse” is featured on Dodd’s website, www.pamelajdodd.com and is available from the publisher, at Booklocker.com, Amazon.com and Books-A-Million (BAMM.com). The next featured speaker for the “Lunch and Learn” series will be Damon Gause, Jefferson, on Feb. 23. Gause will discuss his book, “The War Journal of Major Damon Gause,” a first-hand account of one of the greatest escapes of World War II. Gause was the only child of Damon and Ruth Evans Gause. He was born on Dec. 7, 1943 and was three months old when his father was killed in England during WWII. He grew up in Jefferson while living with his mother, step-father, two step-sisters and step-brother. In 1997, Gause’s mother came to him with all of his father’s possessions, which she had kept since his death. One of the items she gave him included the original manuscript that his father had written after he escaped from the Japanese in the Philippines in 1942. From this first-person manuscript, Gause sculpted the book, “The War Journal of Major Damon ‘Rocky’ Gause.” Gause has been featured on several television programs speaking about the book. He was also invited to speak at the annual Victory in Europe Celebration, held at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The war journal is presently in pre-production as a full feature movie with plans for a release in 2006. Copies of Gause’s book will be available at the Braselton Library for $16. Other speakers planned for the “Lunch and Learn” series include: JoAnn Ray, Braselton, showing her artwork and talking about painting on March 9; Dewitt Weave, a professional golfer living in Braselton, talking about the life as a professional golfer on March 23; and the Hall County Quilt Guild displaying its quilts and members speaking about the art of quilting on April 13. Also, Robbie Bettis will speak about the history of Braselton and Hoschton during the annual meeting on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m., at the Hoschton Depot. |
