Mary Williams
Mary L. Williams, 92, of Dacula, died Sunday, February 13, 2005.
She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Sara Shrock Hostetler.
She was a homemaker, moving to Dacula from Burton, Ohio, 14
years ago. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband,
Samuel Adam Byler.
Survivors include four sons, Henry S. Byler, Winder, Lee A. Byler,
Hoschton, Donald Byler, Ohio, and Davis Byler, Noxon, Mont.;
two daughters, Sarah M. Sass, Statham, and Irene Byler, Dacula;
15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren;
two brothers; four sisters; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, February 16, at the Barrow
Memorial Gardens with the her grandson, Lee Sass officiating.

Grace Brown
Grace Kittle Brown, 85, of Ila, died Monday, February 14, 2005,
at BJC Medical Center, Com-merce.
Born May 13, 1919, in Oconee County, she was the daughter of
the late Jim and Anna James Kittle. She was retired from the
Superior Pants Company and was a member for over 65 years of
the Galilee Fire Baptized Holiness Church, where she taught Sunday
school. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, W.C.
Brown.
Survivors include five sons, Mike Brown, Commerce, Jerry Brown,
Hull, Jimmy Brown, Carnesville, Johnny Brown, Nicholson, and
Steve Brown, Baldwin; seven daughters, Beverly Barnett and Pam
Freeman, both of Ila, Nancy Whitehead, Crawfordville, Shirley
Burkhalter, Athens, Lorena Gilbert, Lenoir, N.C., and Angela
Hale and Alisa Carter, both of Nicholson; three sisters, Bertha
Ramirez, McNeill, Miss., Dorothy Freer, Euless, Texas, and Mary
Keberle, Junction, Ariz.; 38 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren;
seven great-great-grandchildren; and a devoted friend and prayer
partner, Sara Milton, Commerce.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 16, at the Galilee
Fire Baptized Holiness Church with the Revs. Larry Dyer, Dennis
Kesler and Mr. Mike Brown officiating. Burial was in the church
cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Galilee Fire Baptized Holiness

'Hicky' Turpen
Miss Viola Mary "Hicky" Turpen, 83, of Jefferson, died
Sunday, February 13, 2005.
Born March 19, 1921, in Nashville, Tenn., she was the daughter
of the late Frank and Roberta Simpson Turpen. She was retired
from the Jefferson City School System where she was employed
as a teacher and a counselor. She was a graduate of Brenau Academy
and College and the University of Georgia where she was a member
of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, and was a member of the Jefferson
Presbyterian Church. She was a member of the Jefferson Pilot
Club.
Survivors include a sister, Frances Ellington, Jefferson; a niece
and her husband, Sarah Frances and Allen Smith, Cornelia; and
a nephew and his wife, John and Sandra Ellington, Lakeland, Fla.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 15, in the chapel
of Evans Funeral Home with Minister Michael Jarrett officiating.
Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery in Gainesville.

Jimmy Smith
Jimmy Smith, 69, of Winder, died Friday, February 11, 2005.
Born in Fulton County, he was the son of the late James Smith,
Sr. and Claudie Smith. He worked for Holman's Garage in Bethlehem
and was a member of the Sandy Springs Methodist Church. Mr.
Smith was a veteran, having served in the United States Army.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Smith.
Survivors include two sons, J. Glenn Smith, Comer, and Donald
L. Smith, Bethlehem; six grandchildren; a brother, Allen Smith,
Lawrenceville; sisters, Hazel Weldon and Rachel Stephens, both
of Hoschton, Helen Doyle, Torrace, Calif., and Ann Walker, Alpharetta;
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 15, at Smith Funeral
Home Memory Chapel with the Rev. Donnie Pennington officiating.
Burial was in Sandy Springs Methodist Cemetery.

Vera Simmons
Vera Dean Casper Simmons, 84, of Winder, died Thursday, February
10, 2005.
Born in Barrow County, she was the daughter of the late Claude
and Ledisia Butterworth Wills. She was a member of Midway Christian
Church. Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn
Simmons.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Joann Casper,
Winder; daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Bobby Conner, Monroe,
Jimmie Hardigree, Toccoa, Shirley Cole, Linda and Charles Miller
and Irene and Robert Holman, all of Winder; step-daughters, Jeanette
Wilson, Winder, and Delores Potts, Jefferson; 15 grandchildren;
30 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 13, in the Smith
Memory Chapel with the Revs. Chris Bryant and Kyle Baber officiating.
Burial was in Chapel Christian Church Cemetery.

Emma Ricks
Emma C. Blackwell Ricks, 95, of Jefferson, died Wednesday, February
9, 2005, following an extended illness.
She was born December 23, 1909, in Hall County, and was the daughter
of the late Henry H. and Mary Jane Lynn Blackwell. She was retired
from the Jefferson Mills and was a member of the Victory Baptist
Church.
Survivors include her husband, A.J. "Jack" Ricks, Jefferson;
daughters, Brenda Ricks Snelling and Reba Ricks Holmes, both
of Jefferson; sons, Tommy Ricks, Jefferson, and Billy Ricks,
Athens; brother, Curtis Blackwell, Jefferson; three grandchildren;
two step-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 12, at the Victory
Baptist Church with the Rev. Swayne Cochran officiating. Burial
was in the Jackson Memorial Park.

Jessie Free
Jessie Calvin Free, 62, of Pendergrass, died Thursday, February
10, 2005, following a sudden illness.
He was the son of the late Angus Jackson Free Sr. and Jessie
Mae Hulsey Free. He was retired from Dundee Mills where he was
employed as a maintenance engineer and was a member of Cave Springs
Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Beatrice "B" Cochran Free,
Pendergrass; a daughter, Tammy Raina Ledford, Talmo; a son, Dennis
Free, Pendergrass; brother, A.J. Free, Jr., Hiawassee; three
grandchildren; and best friend, James Rooster Rouse.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 12, in the chapel
of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Chad Rising officiating.
Burial was in the Cave Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

Josie Sosbee
Josie Elsie Sosbee, 91, of Bogart, died Friday, February 11,
2005.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late
Melvin and Genny Peppers Davis. She was a homemaker and a member
of Mars Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Sosbee was preceded in death
by her husband, Roy C. Sosbee.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Lee and Sylvia
Sosbee, Athens, Leonard M. and Ann Sosbee and James E. and Carolyn
Sosbee, all of Bogart; daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and
Cleve Burns, Watkinsville, Josephine and Alvin King and Bevoline
and Ronnie Weathersbee, all of Athens; a sister, Nancy McDaniel,
Monroe; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren;
and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 13 in the chapel
of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Jones officiating.
Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers
and honorary pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons

Charles McNeal
Charles Larry McNeal, 58, of Talmo and the Belmont Community,
died Thursday, February 10, 2005, at his residence following
a battle with cancer.
A native of Jackson County, he was born September 14, 1946, in
Gainesville, and was the son of Howard and Evelyn Smith McNeal
of the Fairview Community. He had a poultry farm in Jackson
County, was a residential builder in North Carolina, South Carolina
and Georgia, and was a member of the Johnnie's Hill Masonic Lodge.
Mr. McNeal had served in the Georgia National Guard and was
an avid fisherman, according to family members.
Survivors include his wife, Nan Kinney McNeal, Talmo; a son and
daughter-in-law, Trevor and Rhonda McNeal; two grandchildren,
Savannah and Triston McNeal, Haymarket, Va.; two step-children,
Drew and Maggie Brock, Lula; his parents; two sisters and brothers-in-laws,
Jerry and Alan Dunaway, Suwanee, and Debra and Phil Henderson,
Snellville; a brother and sister-in-law, Dan McNeal and Martha
Honeycutt, Fairview Commun-ity; niece, Kari Dunaway; three nephews,
2nd Lt. Matt McNeal and his wife, Kathryn, Chris McNeal and Josh
Dunaway.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 13, at Belmont Baptist
Church with the Revs. Bill Compton and Mark Spence officiating.
Burial with Masonic Rites was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers
were Dan McNeal, Alan Dunaway, Phil Henderson, Randall Smith,
Ronnie Martin, Roger Smith, John Hudgins and Tony Martin. Honorary
pallbearers were Drew Brock, Josh Dunaway, Matthew McNeal and
Christopher McNeal.

Wilma Cochran
Wilma Patrick Cochran, 65, of Maysville, died Wednesday, February
9, 2005, at BJC Medical Center, following a sudden illness.
She was the daughter of the late J.W. and Willie Mae Payne Patrick.
She was a housewife and a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cochran was preceded in death by a son, Jeff Cochran.
Survivors include her husband, Wilmer (Buck) Cochran, Maysville;
a son, Lamar Cochran, Maysville; a daughter, Barbara Freeman,
Nicholson; brothers, Billy Patrick, Alford Patrick, Robert Patrick,
Roy Patrick, Waymon Patrick, David Patrick, Edward Patrick and
Roger Patrick; sisters, Johnnie Sue Hill and Annie Ray Cartledge;
grandchildren, Courtney Kidd and Chase Smallwood; a great-granddaughter,
Katelyn Kidd; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home
Saturday, February 12, with the Revs. Troy Herbert and Eddie
Gordon officiating. Burial was in the Grove Level Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Marion Wade
Marion Paul Wade, 62, of Commerce, died Friday, February 11,
2005, at her residence.
She was born February 11, 1943, in Jackson County and was the
daughter of the late James Paul and Vester Moon McEntire. She
was a member of the Between First Baptist Church and was a registered
radiology technician.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Melanie and Woody
Jarrett and Dawn Askey, all of Commerce; and two grandsons.
Graveside services were held Sunday, February 13, at the Grey
Hill Cemetery with the Revs. Jeff Colson and Lynne Hollinsworth
officiating.

Carlton Gannaway Sr.
Carlton Wright Gannaway, Sr., 85, of Atlanta, died Monday, January
24, 2005.
He was born October 3, 1919, and was the son of the late Edgar
Pearl and Addie Burrell Gannaway in Rome. He was a veteran having
served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific
Theatre. After the war he joined the field of education working
in several small school systems in Georgia, eventually becoming
the Educational Leader and Principal of J.L. Williams Elementary
School in Commerce. In Commerce, "Prof" as he was
affectionately known, became an outstanding educator, mentor
and friend to many, according to loved ones. Mr. Gannaway received
a Master of Education Degree from Atlanta University and also
took courses which kept him abreast of current educational trends
at Georgia State University. After a long career in the field
of education, Mr. Gannaway retired from the DeKalb County Public
School system in 1969.
While living in Commerce, he attended Warren Chapel United Methodist
Church, where he was instrumental in building the first restroom
at the church. He was also the founder of the Warren Memorial
Scholarship Fund. He was preceded in death by three brothers
and sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ruby Constance Heriot;
one son, Carlton Gannaway, Atlanta; two daughters and sons-in-law,
Marcia and Ervin Johnson, Houston, Tex., and Constance and Henry
Jackson, Fayetteville; six grandchildren, Carlton III, Anwar,
Osmon, Michael, Shaneice, and Savannah; one great-grandson, Carlton
IV; two sisters-in-law, Bernice Heriot, Lancaster, Pa., and Betty
S. Heriot, Sanford, N.C.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 31, at Warren Memorial
United Methodist Church with the Rev. Israel Rucker officiating.
Burial was in the West View Cemetery, Atlanta.

Thomas Sanders
Thomas Sanders, 71, of Nicholson, died Wednesday, February 9,
2005 at Emory Crawford Long Hospital.
Born April 27, 1933, in Jackson County, he was the son of the
late Leonard C. and Myrtle Farmer Sanders. He was retired from
Flowers Products and was a member of Antioch United Methodist
Church.
Survivors include his wife, Pearl Haley Sanders, Nicholson; five
sons, Tony Sanders, David Sanders and Michale Sanders, all of
Nicholson; Randy Sanders, Bogart, and Wayne Bishop, Ila; three
daughters, Judy Bishop and Betty Beusse, both of Hull, and Alene
Howard, Winterville; two brothers, Charles Sanders, Pendergrass,
and Douglas Sanders, Seattle, Wash.; one sister, Mary Lou Barnett,
Nicholson; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 11, at Antioch United
Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Seagraves officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Julius Baugh
Julius Baugh, 80, of Alexander City, Ala., formerly of Maysville,
died Sunday, February 13, 2005, in Alexander City following an
extended illness.
Survivors include a son, Andy Baugh, Alexander City, Ala.; daughter,
Linda Boswell, Maysville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Melba Hanson, 84, of Jefferson, died Monday, February 14, 2005.

S.Y. Nix
S.Y. Nix, 80, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, February 15, 2005,
at his residence following an extended illness.
Born October 30, 1923, in Jackson County, he was the son of
the late Sylvester Y. and Mollie Turner Nix. He was retired
after having been employed for many years in the textile industry.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Loggins Nix, Jefferson; a
son, Mark Nix, Jefferson; sisters, Nora Collins, Madison, Levertie
Evans, Gainesville, and Ruby Edwards, Winder; and three grandchildren
Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 17, in the chapel
of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating Burial
will be in the Jackson Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Leonard
Harrison, Steve McDaniel, Buck McDaniel, David Sellers, Jerry
Sellers, Roger Sellers and Richard Sellers. The family will
receive friends Wednesday, February 16, from 6-8 p.m. at the
funeral home.

Paul Broun
Former State Senator Paul C. Broun, 88, of Athens, died Monday,
February 14, 2005.
Born in Shellman, he was the son of LeRoy Augustus and Annie
Charlotte Edwards Broun. He was a graduate of Athens High School
and the University of Georgia with a degree in Agricultural Engineering.
He was first elected to represent the 46th Senatorial District
in 1962 and held the office for 38 years, making him one of the
longest serving members of the General Assembly. He served as
Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee for a number
of years, Chairman of the Tourism and Economic Development Committee,
and the Southern Regional Education Board. Senator Broun was
a founding member of the Athens Country Club, the Athens City
Club and had served as president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gertrude Margaret
Beasley Broun, and his second wife, Elizabeth Leuthold Shearron
Broun.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Sharon
Broun, Dr. Paul and Niki Broun, Conway and Karen Broun, all of
Athens; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A Celebration of Remembrance will be held Friday, February 18,
at 10 a.m. at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill
Ricketts and Jon Appleton officiating. In lieu of flowers, the
family asks that memorial contributions be made to University
of Georgia Foundation for Paul C. and Margaret B. Broun Scholarship
Assistance Fund, 394 S. Milledge Ave., Athens, Ga. 30602 or to
the Habitat for Humanity, 532 Barber St., Athens, Ga. 30601.
