Overstreet finishes as runner-up
in 140-lb. division at state
BY BEN MUNRO
Walker Overstreet nearly added his
name to select company in his final match as a high school wrestler
Saturday.
The Raider state title hopeful advanced to the finals and came
four points away from winning the Class AAAA championship in
the 140-lb. division as he took runners-up honors in the weight
class to close his Madison County career.
Overstreet was trying to follow Mark Arnold who won the 189-lb.
title the previous two years.
"He had a great year and a great career here," Raider
head coach Richie Houston said of Overstreet. "Second in
the state ain't too shabby."
Overstreet was beaten 9-5 by Ringgold's Greg Hopkins who has
already signed a scholarship with the University of Tennessee
at Chattanooga.
Houston called the match, "one of the more exciting finals
matches" of the tournament at the Rome Forum.
Overstreet finishes his senior year with a 43-4 record.
Josh Arnold and Josh Blackmon also had notable performances at
state, winning two matches each.
Now, Madison County turns its attention toward the future after
putting a young team on the mat this year. Houston said the taste
of state tournament experience that some of the team had this
year will bode well for upcoming seasons.
"By already getting their feet wet this year, they won't
have quite as many butterflies the next time," he said,
adding "Having a state runnerup the first year is a good
way to get started."
