Howard
Godfrey, Jr.
Howard Keith Godfrey, Jr., 58, of Winder, died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, following an extended illness.
Born March 15, 1946, in Philadelphia, Penn., he was the son of the late Howard Keith Godfrey Sr. and Helen Oettinger Costa. Mr. Godfrey was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during Vietnam and receiving the Purple Heart. He was a maintenance administrator with BellSouth and was Lutheran.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy Sue Parr Godfrey, Winder; and two sons, Robert James Godfrey and Brian Keith Godfrey, both of Winder.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 28, at 2 p.m. at the graveside in the Woodbine Cemetery with the Rev. Rusty Newman officiating. The family will receive friends Friday, January 28, from noon to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral home before the service.

Maxie Carter
Maxie Lee Carter, 86, of Braselton, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005.
A native of Banks County, he was the son of the late Seaborn Tillman and Margaret Hassie Watson Carter. He was a retired truck driver. Mr. Carter was preceded in death his wife, Mary Frances Cromer Carter.
Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Thompson, Commerce, Debra Brock, Statham, and Brenda Palmer, Braselton; a son, David Carter, Winder; one brother, John E. Carter, Jefferson; 10 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 27, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Duncan officiating. Burial will be in the Grey Hill Cemetery.

Eloise Gibson
Eloise Weeks Gibson, 85, of Decatur, mother of the Rev. William Carey Gibson, Sr., the pastor of Jefferson First United Methodist Church, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005.
She was a graduate of Agnes Scott College and a charter member and ordained deacon of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church. She was also a member of the North Decatur Lions Club and was employed with Rich’s Department Store as an assistant buyer. Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her grandson, Nathan Mansel Wages.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, William Claude Gibson, Jr.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Gay Gibson and Danny Morgan Wages; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. William Carey Gibson, Sr. and Lynn Ford Gibson; grandchildren and spouses, Elise Jewel Wages, Heather Elizabeth and Mark Timothy Farrar, Rebecca Lynn and Christopher James Mercer, William Carey Gibson, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Colin Gibson and Hannah Elizabeth Farrar.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 23, at Scott Boulevard Baptist Church with Dr. T. Michael Davis officiating. Burial was in the Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

J.B. Woodall
J.B. Woodall, 83, of Hoschton, died Monday, January 24, 2005.
He was a Jackson County native and the son of the late Singleton “Sang” and Minnie Boyd Woodall. He was a farmer and member of Union Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Hayes Woodall, Hoschton; two sons, Stanley Woodall and David Woodall, both of Hoschton; two sisters, Sadie Joiner and Ruth Mulligan, both of Snellville; and a granddaughter, Kristen Woodall, Hoschton.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 26, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Revs. Rusty Newman and Howard Banks officiating. Burial was at Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

Edna Mauldin
Edna Mauldin, 91, of Winder, died Saturday, January 22, 2005.
She was born in Lumpkin County the daughter of the late Bowman and Theodora Grizzle Cain. She was a retied seamstress and a member of the Winder Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. Mrs. Mauldin was preceded in death by her husband, Lester C. Mauldin, Sr., children, L.C. Mauldin, Jr., Mary Evelyn Mauldin, Herman Mauldin and Douglas Mauldin, Sr.
Survivors include grandchildren, Victoria Ledford and Timothy Mauldin, both of Hoschton; a sister, Lizzie Hamilton, Bethlehem; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral Services were held Tuesday, January 25, at the Winder Church of the Lord Jesus Christ with Pastor Tommy Baker officiating. Burial was in the Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Margaret Gaddis
Margaret Gaddis, 81, of Braselton, died Thursday, January 20, 2005.
She was born in Toombs County and was the daughter of the late Robert and Lula Mae Guin Dixon. She was a member of The Braselton Church of God of Prophecy, was a retired seamstress, having been employed with both the Carwood Manufacturing Company and the R & R Manufacturing Company for many years. Mrs. Gaddis was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Mallard Gaddis, with whom she loved ministering to other people, according to family members.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Larry Timms, Braselton; son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Robert and Brenda Gaddis, Bowersville; sister, Edna Pittman, Glenwood; brother, Hilton Dixon, Glenwood; four grandchildren, Donnie Timms, Paula Savage, Denise Sexton, and Debbie King; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Revs. James Turpin and Jerry Gaddis officiating. Burial was in the Braselton Church of God of Prophecy Church Cemetery.

Gertrude Lester
Gertrude Wages Lester, 89, of Athens, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005.
A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James Brant and Mattie Tavie Fowler Wages. She was retired from Athens Regional Medical Center after 20 years and was a member of Prospect Methodist Church. Mrs. Lester was preceded in death by her husband, Leon N. Lester, a son, Allen Williamson, and a granddaughter, Nancy Patton.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and Buddy Jones, Hull, Patsy and Hugh Riley, Pine Mountain; daughter-in-law, Janice Williamson, Athens; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, at Prospect Methodist Church with the Rev. Randy Crowe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were her nephews.

Coley Hembree
Coley Hembree, 78, of Huntsville, Ala, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at his residence.
He was born December 17, 1926, in Banks County and was the son of the late Charlie and Maude Nard Hembree. Mr. Hembree was formerly of Anderson, S.C., was retired from Kraft Foods, and was a member of Homeland Park Church of God. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by a son, Jimmy Hembree.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Sears Hembree, Huntsville, Ala.; one son, David Hembree, Huntsville, Ala.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 22, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Gillard and Roy Puckett officiating. Burial was in Grove Level Baptist Church Cemetery, Maysville.

Edward Williamson
Edward Lamar Williamson, 77, of Hull, died Sunday, January 23, 2005.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Leitus and Nobie Booth Williamson. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army and was retired from Kendall Inc., where he was employed as a maintenance electrician. Mr. Williamson was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Harrison.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Hardeman Williamson, Hull; daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Marc Kanne, Atlanta, Beverly and Ranel Parks, Beth and Mike Kittle and Becky Clark, all of Athens, Laura and Royce Bray, Hull; sons and daughter-in-law, Steve and Sharon Williamson, Commerce, and Woody Williamson, Hull; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 25, in the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Black officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Howell Seagraves, David Langford, Barry Hardeman, Alan Cofer, Randy Ray and Ricky Smith.

Edna Jennings
Edna A. Jennings, 83, of Winder, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
She was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Gertrude Briscoe Appling. Mrs. Jennings was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a volunteer kitchen worker, a member of the Winder Women’s Club, served as Secretary-Treasurer of Barrow County Benevolence Ministries, a Cub Scout troop leader, honorary chairman for 2004 Relay for Life, chairman of the American Apparel Manufacturing Association and a member of the Iris Garden Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Jennings, Jr.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Danette B. Jennings and Don and Jannie H. Jennings, all of Winder; grandchildren, Jon Jennings, Hoschton, Will, Joe and Audrey Jennings; and great-grandchild, Davey Jennings, Hoschton.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. John Talley officiating. Burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery.

J.D. York
J.D. York, 72, of Mt. Airy, died Friday, January 21, 2005, at the Habersham County Medical Center.
He was born August 29, 1932, in Habersham County, the son of the late Joe York, Sr. and Lillie York McDonald. He was a member of the Christian Free Worship Church. Mr. York was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Daniel York, a brother, Joe York, and a sister, Dot York Umbehant.
Survivors include his wife, Dolly Vinson York, Mt. Airy; daughters and son-in-law, Jan and Ted Williams, Carnesville, and Michelle York, Mt. Airy; son, Jacky D. York, Mt. Airy; sisters, Minnie Payne, Baldwin, Frances Umbehant, Cornelia, Lessie Finigan, Marshall, Texas, Margie Rabb, Jefferson, Hilda Mewborne, Mt. Airy, Betty Loggins and Linda Ledford, both of Clarkesville; brothers, Larry York, Mt. Airy and Lloyd York, Eastanollee; three grandchildren, Wesley Williams, Carnesville, Kristy York, Cornelia, and Jacob York, Mt. Airy.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 23, in the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Revs. Mickey Umbehant and Scott Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in the Eastview Cemetery.

Gerald Brookshire
Gerald Wendell Brookshire, 70, of Memphis, Tenn., died Tuesday, December 28, 2004, at Baptist East Memorial Hospital in Memphis.
He was born in Jackson County and was the son of the late Robert Claude and Effie Viola Baker Brookshire. He attended Jefferson High School and was one of the original Mud Turtle Football Players of JHS. Mr. Brookshire was retired from the United States Navy, having served with the Seabees during the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, pastor of Hometown P.H. Church in Memphis and had been a missionary in Mexico for a number of years.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Morrison Brookshire, Memphis; three sisters, Edna Lance, Pendergrass, Faye Roberts, Jefferson, and Carolyn Waters, Commerce; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 31, at the Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel in Waynesboro, Tenn., with Hilton Austin and Mike Scott officiating. Burial was in Sheids Cemetery in Waynesboro.

Betty Wisenbaker
Betty Joyce Wisenbaker, 82, of Danielsville, died Friday, January 21, at BJC Medical Center in Commerce.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Nathaniel and Jessie Carrie Sizemore West. She was a Baptist. Mrs. Wisenbaker was preceded in death by her husband, C.H. “Garbo” Wisenbaker.
Survivors include a son, C.H. (Skip) Wisenbaker, Atlanta; two daughters, Pamela J. Tetu, Danielsville, and Julie Knight, McKinney, Texas; grandchildren, Clark T. Wisenbaker, Courtni Sara Scheel, Desiree Tetu, Joy Knight, Cassie Tetu, Kelly Knight, Evette Tetu; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 23, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home. Burial was in the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

Lottie Minish
Lottie Ingram Minish, 85, of Commerce, died Sunday, January 23, 2005, at Athens Regional Medical Center, Athens.
She was a native of Madison County and the daughter of the late Richard and Pearl Gooch Ingram. She was a member of Erastus Christian Church.
Survivors include her husband, L.B. Minish, Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Walter Peck, Commerce; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Teresa Minish, Commerce; brothers, Fred Ingram, Atlanta and Clifford Ingram, Nicholson; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 25, at the Erastus Christian Church with the Revs. Billy Glosson and E.R. Healan officiating. Burial was in the Minish Family Cemetery.

Mary Barrett
Mary Lee Barrett, 76, of Commerce, died Wednesday, January 19, 2005, at Scenic View Nursing Home in Baldwin.
She was the daughter of the late Emory H. and Lizzie Pinson Arnold. She worked for many years as a Certified Nurse’s Assistant at BJC Medical Center and was a member of the River of Life Worship Center in Nicholson. Mrs. Barrett was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Hart Barrett, and a son, James Thomas Barrett.
Survivors include a daughter, Beth Crump, Commerce; three grandchildren, Chris Bingham, Jefferson, Chad Bingham, Commerce, and Jennifer Hix, Alto; four great-grandchildren, Blake Bingham, Halie Bingham and Madison Bingham, all of Jefferson, and Alex Bingham, Commerce; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home with the Revs. Rodney Deese and Howard Rhodes officiating. Burial was in Howington Cemetery in Nicholson, and committal services were conducted in the chapel as part of the funeral service.

Edna Carter
Edna Marie Carter, 45, of Commerce, died Sunday, January 16, 2005, at the Athens Regional Medical Center.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Parks and Mary Edwards Carter. Mrs. Carter was preceded in death by a daughter, Heather Seabolt.
Survivors include a son, Dennis Seabolt, Jefferson; three daughters, Marsha Alford, Commerce, Lisa Black, Talmo, and Tanya Wood, Auburn; a brother, Mike Carter, Auburn; a sister, Lena Brown, Auburn; grandchildren, Ron Alford, Hunter Alford, Easton Alford, Austin Black, Cydney Seabolt, Morgan Seabolt, Xavier Wood; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 21, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home. Burial was in Howington Cemetery, Nicholson.

Quentin Freeman
Quentin A. Freeman, 80, of Commerce, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005.
He was a native of Madison County and was the son of the late Chester and Dottie Hendrix Freeman. He was a retired pilot and flight instructor, and a veteran of the United States Air Force having served during World War II. Mr. Freeman was a member of the Apple Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Hooper Freeman, Commerce; and a daughter and son-in-law, Lavonda and Mike Cheek, Watkinsville.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 27, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. Ray Austin and Patrick Chandler officiating. Burial will be in the Jackson Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday, January 27, from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Jamie Couch
Jamie Tate Couch, 84, of Lawrenceville, died Monday, January 24, 2005.
She was formerly of Athens and Watkinsville and was born July 24, 1920, in Jackson County. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Gillie Tate. Mrs. Couch was preceded in death in 2004 by a brother, William Neal Tate, Niceville, Fla.
Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Jack W. Couch; daughters, Donna C. Guyton, Maysville, and Deborah C. Ford, Lawrenceville; sisters, Nell Thornton, Charlotte, N.C., and Millie Spears, Covington; a brother, Robert H. Tate, Jr., Hartwell; grandchildren, Dana G. Thornton, Washington, Don Guyton, Maysville, Erin Wilichowski, Lawrenceville, Alicia Munoz, Tucker, Peren Ford, Lawrenceville, Joshua Ford, Norcross; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Friday, January 28, at 11 a.m. in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home with the Chaplain John Reeser officiating. Burial will be in Sherwood Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 27 from 7:30-9 p.m. at Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 300 Simonton Road, Lawrenceville.
