‘Zack’ Howard James “Zack” Howard, 87, of Jefferson, died Friday, July 1, 2005. He was born in Hancock County and was the son of the late Homer and Ruby Howard. He was retired from The Sprinkler Fitters Local 669 and had been a gentlemen farmer for the past 25 years raising cattle and growing watermelons. He was Baptist. Mr. Howard was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II as a medic. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucille Royal Howard, and a daughter, Mary Louise Walton. Survivors include two sons, Joe and Pete Royal, both of Winder; five grandchildren, Phyllis Berry, Phil Royal, Chris Royal, Linda Thompson and Sheryl Parks; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Sarah Coleman, Los Angeles, Calif. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 2, in the Smith Funeral Home Memory Chapel with Minister Tom Plank officiating. Burial was in the Barrow Memorial Gardens. The Jackson Herald, July 6, 2005. Cindy Sweatman Cindy Sue Sweatman, 52, of Gainesville, died Sunday, July 1, 2005, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following a sudden illness. She was born in Warren, Ohio, but had lived in Hall County for the past 13 years. Before moving to Hall County, she was a resident of Jefferson for a number of years. She was a store clerk at Kroger and was Methodist. Mrs. Sweatman was preceded in death by her father, John Henry Kirkland. Survivors include her husband, James Stanley Sweatman, Gainesville; daughters, Candice Bowler, Hoschton, and Misty Jones, Jefferson; step-son, Erik Sweatman, Winder; step-daughter, Nadein Abercrombie, Gainesville; mother, Janet Kirkland, Jacksonville, Fla.; brothers, Robert Kirkland, Leetonia, Ohio, and Douglas Kirkland, Jacksonville, Fla.; sister, Diane Kovach, Jacksonville, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Memorial services were held Wednesday, July 6, at the Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Tom Plank officiating. \ Memorial contributions may be made to the Cindy Sweatman Fund at Community Bank and Trust. Patricia Gandy Patricia Marie Matthews Skeggs Gandy, 78, of Commerce, died Sunday, July 3, 2005. She was born in Crestview, Fla., and was the daughter of the late Sell and Laura Atkins Matthews. She was a retired lab technician from Gold Kist, a member of Homer Baptist Church, and an active member of the Banks County Senior Center. Mrs. Gandy was preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. Paul F. Skeggs, Sr., and her second husband William Q. Gandy. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Skeggs, Jr. and Michele Skeggs, Homer, and Hiram and Elizabeth Skeggs, Royston; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, July 4, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating. Burial was in the Social Circle City Cemetery. Joseph Martin, Jr. Joseph Lex Martin, Jr., 78, of Commerce, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at his residence. He was born August 31, 1926, in DeKalb County, and was the son of the late Joseph Lex Martin Sr. and Mary Jane Morris Martin. He was a retired radio and TV repairman and was a member of Decatur Height Baptist Church. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Beatrice Harris Martin, Commerce; son, Dave Martin, Lawrenceville; daughter, Janet L. Pierce, Commerce; and four grandchildren, Joel C. Pierce, Jason S. Pierce, Denver L. Martin and Dustin L. Martin. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 2, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. Ronnie Moon and Jerry Smith officiating. Virginia Hardman Virginia Hodges Hardman, 88, of Colbert, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, at her residence. She was born September 12, 1916, in Dublin, and was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles Augustus Hodges and Nina Moye Hodges. After her mother died, she was raised by her beloved uncle and aunt, Carl and Bessie Wade Hodges, Montrose. She graduated high school in Dublin, and was a graduate of Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville in 1938. After graduating college, she moved to Colbert and taught math at Colbert High School where she was the girls’ basketball coach. After two years at Colbert, she moved to Baxley, near her hometown of Dublin, where she taught for one year before moving back to Colbert, where she spent the rest of her life. She taught one year in Comer and then stayed home to watch over the younger years of her daughters. She retired after 32 years of teaching and 27 of those were spent as the librarian at Colbert Elementary School. She was librarian of the Colbert Community Library for approximately 10 years after retirement. Mrs. Hardman was a member of the Colbert United Methodist Church for 60 years, where she served as pianist, treasurer, teacher of children’s Sunday School classes, the Annie Laura Hampton Class and the Children’s Message, the last being Palm Sunday of this year. Mrs. Hardman was preceded in death by her husband, Phil Morris Hardman; a brother, Robert Earl Hodges; and sisters, Annett Callahan and Charlotte Alexander. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Tal Martin, Hull, and Nancy and Mitchell Goss, Colbert; sisters, Betty Lord, Montrose, Margaret Chappell, Dublin; brother, Dr. Charles Hodges, Valdosta; grandchildren and their spouses, Jody and Tommy Ferguson, Philip Shane and Jennifer Martin, Rodney Goss, Rusty Goss; great-grandchildren, Haden Martin, Haze Ferguson, Henry Martin and Kira Martin. A “celebration of life” was held Tuesday, July 5, at the Colbert United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Haralson officiating. James McCrackin James Arthur McCrackin, 76, of Gillsville, died Monday, July 4, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital. He was born February 3, 1929, in Cornelia and was the son of the late George Arthur and Valeria Walker McCrackin. Having recently moved to Banks County from East Point to be with family, he grew up in Spartanburg, S.C., and graduated from Spartanburg High School and Wofford College. He was a veteran having served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway after 43 years of service. Mr. McCrackin was preceded in death by a brother, George Kermit McCrackin. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Rebecca McCrackin, Gillsville; daughter, Jamie Throneberry, Gillsville; son, Craig McCrackin, Homer; daughter-in-law, Celeste Williams, Homer; brother, Alton McCrackin, Homer; three grandchildren, Natalie Eubanks, Nicholas Throneberry and Christopher McCrackin, all of Homer; and a great-grandson, Ulric Eubanks, Homer. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 9, at the Hazel Creek Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Friday, July 8, from 6 to 9 p.m. Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, was in charge of arrangements.
