Marion Hill
Marion Hill, 81, of Homer, died Monday, July 18, 2005.
She was born on May 21, 1924, and was the daughter of Fred Gordon and Mae Henderson Hill. She grew up in Atlanta and attended Morningside Elementary School and Girls High. She chose Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tenn., and received her B.A. in 1945. She was requested to stay on as Assistant Dean of Women and worked on her Master’s degree, which she received in 1947. Added to her duties was the job of public relations. She became director of administration at Bob Jones University in 1953 where she worked until 1963 and then returned to Banks County to care for her aging mother. She taught at Gillsville Elementary and transferred to Banks County in 1966. Miss Hill retired in 1988 after 25 years of teaching.
She taught the adult ladies class at Homer Baptist Church for 37 years.
Funeral services will be Thursday, July 21 at 11 a.m. at the Homer Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Manus and Wade Lott officiating. Burial will be in the Hill Family Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 20, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Little-Ward Funeral Home.

Olivia Smith
Mary Olivia Hale Smith, 89, of Athens, died Thursday, July 14, 2005.
A native of Jackson County, she was born on May 5, 1916, and was the daughter of the late John T. and Ada O. Hale of the Attica community. She was a long time and faithful member of Stevens Grove Baptist Church, Lexington, as well as of the Jolly Elders of Green Acres Baptist Church. She had been a resident of the Athens area for 50 years and was retired from the Clarke County School District having worked in the lunch room at Cedar Shoals High School for a number of years. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Smith and a son, Anthony J. Smith.
Survivors include a son and daughters-in-law, George W. Smith, Jr. and Nancy, and Julie Massey Smith, all of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Douglas Martin; two grandsons, Douglas Tyson Martin, Madison County, and Jared Martin, Indianapolis, Ind.; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Jeanette Butler and Virginia Hale; and a number of brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at Stevens Grove Baptist Church, Lexington, with the Rev. John H. McPherson officiating. Pallbearers were Harold Butler, Wayne Butler, Bill Smith, James Smith, Wallace Woods, Sammie Woods and Robert Long. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Allen Adams
Ronnie Allen Adams, 41, of Winterville, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005.
Born in Jackson County, he was the son of Ronnie and Ophelia Adams, Commerce. He was a longtime resident of Winder and was employed with Pike Electric.
Survivors include his wife, Laura Parten Adams; children, Katelin Adams and Corde Alan Adams; his parents; and a sister, Linda Massey.
Graveside services were held Friday, July 15, at the Athens Memory Gardens.

Leonard Dalton
Leonard Dalton, 91, of Commerce, formerly Jefferson, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, following a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Oscar Charles and Lottie Key Dalton. He worked at the Kings Bridge Road compacter site for Jackson County after his retirement from Harmony Grove Mills. Mr. Dalton was preceded in death by a son, Bradley Dalton.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Davis Dalton, Commerce; two daughters, Kathie Dalton, Atlanta, and Beverly Wood, Commerce; three sisters, Vada Craig, N.C., Rena Mae Sealey, Walnut Grove, and Betty Jo Gulley, Eatonton; three brothers, Billy Dalton, Jefferson, Bobby Hugh Dalton, Kennesaw, and Jim Dalton, N.C.; five grandchildren, Donna Dalton, Deanna Bowen, Brent Wood, Bryan Wood and Misty Friedman; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 15, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Manus officiating. Burial was in the Jackson Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Brent Wood, Bryan Wood, Mark Bowen, Rich Friedman, Roger Jackson and Tommy Gerald Griffin.

Bertha Williamson
Bertha Janet Williamson, 69, of Commerce, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Born in Jackson County on February 3, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Margaret Davis Williamson. Miss Williamson was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce.
Survivors include a number of cousins.
Funeral services were held Friday, July 15, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with Dr. Carlton Allen officiating.

Thurmon Poe
Thurmon Poe, 86, of Marietta, died Thursday, July 14, 2005.
He was born on March 19, 1919, in Jackson County, and was retired having worked with the United States Government. He was a member of the Roswell Street Baptist Church, Marietta, and was a veteran, of the United States Air Corps serving during World War II.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Alison Ingram, Marietta; and a step-son, Lewis Everett and family, Oveido, Fla.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home. Burial was in Woodbine Cemetery, Jefferson.

Willie Jean Owensby
Willie Jean Owensby, 59, of Gillsville, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness.
She was born in Hall County on November 17, 1945, and was the daughter of the late Joe L. and Pearl Pepper Harris. She lived most all of her life in Banks County, and was a member of the Gillsville Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Owensby was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Harris and a sister, Ruby Harris. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, according to family members.
Survivors include her husband of 35 years, John L. Owensby, Gillsville; son and daughter-in-law, Randall and Stacey Owensby, Gillsville; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Brian Mathis, Gillsville; granddaughters, Morgan Stringer and Amber Owensby, both of Gillsville; grandson, Hunter Stringer, Gillsville; sisters, Ruth Parson and Mary Parson, both of Gillsville, Ollie Savage, Maysville, and Margie Sanders, Homer; brother, William Harris and John Henry Harris, both of Gillsville; Howard Harris, Commerce, and James Harris, Lula; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at the Gillsville Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Calhoun and Donald Tritt officiating. Burial was in the Gillsville Cemetery.

Lillie Mae Ferguson
Lillie Mae Tate Ferguson, 92, of Gillsville, died Thursday, July 14, 2005, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
She was born March 29, 1913, in Jackson County and was the daughter of the late Thomas Robert and Julie Hulsey Tate. She was a member of the Midway United Methodist Church. Mrs. Ferguson was preceded in death by her husband, William Patrick Ferguson.
Survivors include four sons, Jerry Ferguson, Jimmy Ferguson and Richard Ferguson, all of Gillsville, and Bill Ferguson, Springdale, Ariz.; two daughters, Patsy Davis, Homer, and Joan Faust, Lavonia; two brothers, Odis Tate, Nicholson, and Howard Tate, Eastman; 22 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 16, at the Midway United Methodist Church with the Revs. Marshall Dale, Phil Ferguson and Howard Bledsoe officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Martha Huey
Martha Turk Huey, 93, of Commerce, died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
She was born in Banks County and was the daughter of the late J.C. and Mollie Anderson Turk. Mrs. Huey was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel W. Huey, formerly of Butler; brothers, Josiah Turk and Robert J. Turk, both formerly of Maysville, and Henry Turk, Union City; and a sister, Susie O’Donnell, formerly of Atlanta.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins, George Turk, Commerce, Evelyn Rylee Crane and Robert Rylee, both of Maysville.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Revs. Henry Webb and Bill Ford officiating. Burial was in the Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Butler.

Beatrice Spruell
Beatrice Ousley Spruell, 57, of Jefferson, died Saturday, July 16, 2005.
Born in Vinton County, Ohio, she was a homemaker and was the daughter of the late Clarence and Alma Jeanetta Lightfoot Ousley.
Survivors include her husband, Donald E. Spruell, Jefferson; a daughter, Donielle R. Ford, Commerce; son, Michael Allen Hunt, Jefferson; granddaughter, Cameron Ford; and brothers, Buddy Ousley and Bob Ousley, both of McArthur, Ohio, Tom Ousley, Jefferson, and Larry Ousley, Wellston, Ohio.
Graveside services were held Monday, July 18, at Barrow Memorial Gardens. Entombment was in the Barrow Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Margot Sisk
Margot Weber Sisk, 78, of Commerce, died Sunday, July 17, 2005, at her residence.
Born on February 14, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Herman and Otteilla Hofman Weber. She was a housekeeper at Parham Hotel and a member of Atlanta Church of Christ. Mrs. Sisk was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Russell Sisk.
Survivors include a son, Britt Lord Jr., Jefferson; daughters, Diana King, Commerce, and Lorraine Jones, Jeffersonville, Ind.; two sisters; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 19, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Goodwin officiating. Burial was in the Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.

Doris Lemley Lord, 66, of Jefferson, died Friday, July 15, 2005.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Woodrow Lemley and Irene Mote Lemley, Jefferson. She was a homemaker and was Baptist. Mrs. Lord was preceded in death by a son, Mark Lord.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Harold Lord, Jefferson; two daughters, Laurie Bond Baldwin, Jefferson, and Regina Love, Pendergrass; son, Dwight Lord, Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Peggy Smith, Gainesville, and Martha Jo Lecompte, Indiana; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 17, at the Victory Baptist Church with the Rev. Swayne Cochran officiating. Burial was in the Dry Pond Methodist Church Cemetery.

Nathaniel Whisnant, 69, of Commerce, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at Athens Regional Hospital following an extended illness.
Survivors include four brothers, Harold Whisnant, Jefferson, Buster Whisnant, Wadley, Homer Whisnant, Commerce, and U.V. Whisnant, Arcade; a half-brother, James Whisnant, Arcade; three sisters, Mary Lou Norris, Nicholson, Eunice Kittle, Madison County, and Alice McDaniel, Statham.

Reatha Bell Thomas, 76, of Commerce, died July 12, 2005, at her residence.

Ellen Mulvey Herrin, 47, of Lula, died Monday, July 18, 2005, at her residence following an extended illness.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, on May 20, 1958, she was the daughter of the late Francis P. Mulvey, Sr. and Julia Mulvey; Fayetteville, N.C. She was a legal assistant with the law office of Spencer S. Duckett and was Catholic.
Survivors include her husband, Clinton Herrin, Lula; daughters, Julie Stewart, Demorest, and Amber Andrews, Alto; sons, Brandon Herrin, Homer, and Travis Herrin, Commerce; her mother; brothers, Francis P. Mulvey, Jr., Chip Mulvey and Kevin Mulvey, all of Fayetteville, N.C.; sisters, Beth Mong, Fredericksburg, Va., Deborah Mulvey, San Diego, Calif., and Catherine Miller, Fayetteville, N.C.; special aunt, Eleanor Deaton, Fayetteville, N.C.; special friend, Marie Stewart, Fayetteville, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

Mae Spain Wood, 100, of Hoschton, the Mt. Moriah Community, died Friday, July 15, 2005.
She was a native of Jackson County, and was a homemaker and a member of the Woods Grove Baptist Church, Auburn. She died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, according to loved ones. Mrs. Wood was preceded in death by her husband, Dilmus Wood and a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Wesley Meon
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Lois Wood, Hoschton; grandchildren, Gail Kirkpatrick, Hoschton, Wayne Wood, Shelia Jackson, both of Auburn, Marilyn Goddard, Nicholson, Marsha Wood, Buford, and Richard Moon, Jefferson; 11 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held Sunday, July 17, in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with the Revs. Charles Spruill and Cedric Banks officiating. Burial was in the Woods Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Auburn.
