County’s adult learning center relocated
New literacy programs planned for winter quarter
The Banks County Adult Learning Center has been relocated.
The center is still on the old Banks County Middle School campus, but it is now in the building behind its old location.
To get to the center from Hwy. 51, turn by the Banks County Public Library and continue until the road curves to the right. Parking is available behind the building near the middle school football field. Enter the building via the yard and sidewalk that leads to the blue, double-doors under the breezeway.
“Everyone is welcome to stop by, meet us, and check out our new classrooms,” said instructor Sharon Clark.
The learning center hours are: 8 a.m. to noon Mondays and Wednesdays and noon to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“The Banks County Adult Learning Center is here to help people improve reading, writing, and math skills, for personal enhancement, for GED preparation, and for excellence in the workplace,” Clark said. “We also welcome non-native speakers of English who want to improve their language skills.”
Those interested in obtaining a GED, or improving their language, reading, and writing skills, are asked to call (706) 677-4302, e-mail sclark@laniertech.edu or stop by the center.
HOLIDAY HOURS
The center will be closed for the Thanksgiving holidays, Wednes-day through Friday, Nov. 23-25, and will be closed for Christmas holidays, Dec. 16 - Jan. 8.
“We have some new literacy activities planned when our winter quarter begins January 9,” Clark said. “We are planning a reading/writing workshop, which will meet on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. During this time, we will enjoy shared readings and generate topics for writing from those readings. Then we will focus on drafting, revising, and editing the pieces we’ve written. This will be excellent practice for the GED essay, as well as for the budding writers in the community.”
The workshop will be open to all GED students and to everyone in the community, who would like to participate, regardless of educational background.
The center will also be hosting a “Lunch and Learn” series of studies beginning on Wednesday, January 11, at noon. The first series will be entitled, “Breaking Free,” and it is for those who are struggling with overcoming the past and moving forward with their lives.
For more information, call Clark at 677-4302.
