Maysville approves EMI for water maintenance
After a somewhat lengthy discussion, the Maysville City Council voted Monday night to use EMI of Lawrenceville five days per week to handle the day-to-day operation and maintenance of its water system.
Currently, the city had been using EMI for two days per week and was paying by the hour. The new agreement, which was approved unanimously, will increase the amount of days to five with an average cost of $2,500 per month.
EMI representative Chip McGaughey told council members the amount could be more if an emergency situation arose and took more manpower and hours to handle.
Council member Trent Strickland told fellow council members he felt having EMI available five days each week was needed at this time. Recently, Strickland has been handling various water duties such as checking of wells and the city’s wastewater pond although he is not being paid to do so.
The council tossed around the idea of hiring an individual to handle the water issues, but members felt it would be more economical to allow EMI to perform the various tasks. In the past, the city has had trouble keeping employees in the position because it cannot afford to pay as much as other municipalities.
Also at Monday’s meeting, which lasted almost three hours, council members were told by McGaughey that the cost of upgrading the water lines on Sears Road would be approximately $186,000. The construction cost would be $142,000 with engineering costs at $44,000.
The plan is to loop the Sears Drive waterlines with those on Deer Run which would increase water pressure for both streets. McGaughey said approximately 480 feet of line would be needed for the project and easements would still have to be purchased.
The city plans to pay for the water line upgrade with its share of Banks County Special Local Option Sales Tax funds.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other items at Monday’s council meeting, council members:
•tabled action on a maintenance bond for Mar-Jac.
•tabled the appointment of two Downtown Development Authority members.
•tabled a lease agreement between the City of Maysville and the Maysville Fire Department.
•tabled a motion for purchasing flags for use in the city park for future holidays until council member Rebecca McNeely could find out prices..
•heard from Catherine Daniels concerning use of the city park for upcoming local farmer’s market.
•heard from Red Oak Drive resident Jim Burton who asked city officials for help with water drainage issues on his property. Burton said the road was not constructed properly and he has spent thousands of dollars trying to keep his property from being damaged when it rains. After a discussion which lasted approximately 20 minutes, far longer than the normal allotted time for public comment, mayor Jerry Baker agreed to meet with the Banks County engineer to see what can be done about the situation.
•voted to use Alltel for the city’s phone system. City clerk Barbara Thomas, when asked by the council, said she preferred to use Alltel because of the company’s quick response time to problems.
•held a close meeting for approximately 20 minutes concerning “possible litigation” but took no action.
•Clarification: Council member Trent Strickland said he wanted to clarify a statement attributed to him in last week’s issues of The Banks County News, The Jackson Herald and The Commerce News. In those publications, Strickland was attributed with saying eventually the Jackson County Water and Sewerage Authority or the city of Commerce would have to take over Maysville’s systems. Strickland said Monday night he said Maysville would have to eventually “connect” with either the JCWSA or the city of Commerce.
