Peggy Howard
Peggy Howard, 58, of Winder, died Sunday, June 25, 2006.
A native of Hall County, she was the daughter of the late Leroy and Annie Mae Hicks. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include children, Lois Howard and Lewis Howard, both of Braselton, Kenneth Howard and Kevin Howard, both of Winder; sisters, Ann Hooper, Hiram, and Deborah Bettis, Nicholson; a brother, Frankie Petty, Nichols; and eleven grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, June 28, at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Allie Daniel
Allie Clifton Daniel, 81, of Mt. Airy, died Monday, June 26, 2006, at his residence.
Born on January 21, 1925, in Habersham County, he was the son of the late Roy Clifton and Seanie Loudermilk Daniel. He was retired from Sealtest Milk Co., after working there as a distributor for 35 years, and was a member of Welcome Home Baptist Church. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Daniel was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Lewis Daniel.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Jordan Daniel, Mt. Airy; two sons, Anthony Clifton Daniel and Alan Christopher Daniel, both of Mt. Airy; three grandchildren, Tiffany Daniel Griffin, Homer, and Cody and Blake Daniel, Cornelia.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 28, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie Glaze officiating. Burial was at Yonah Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Samuel Parson officiating at the graveside.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

‘Granny’ Murphy
Evelyn “Granny” Murphy, 90, formerly of the Harber House Inn, Commerce, died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at her residence in Kaplan, La.
Mrs. Murphy was preceded in death by her first husband, Earl George Alexander; second husband, Patrick Edward Murphy; one brother, Ellis Wiggins, and one sister, Theresa Mae Baker.
Survivors include one son, Kem Vaughn, Slidell, La.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rosalie and Arthur Richard, Commerce, and Earlene Alexander and Harry Mire, Kaplan, La.; four brothers, Lloyd, Leslie and Henry Wiggins, Metairie, La., and Charlie Wiggins, Mandeville, La.; seven grandchildren, Albert Pellissier, Michael Pellissier, Andrew Richard, Jeffery Hildreth, Craig Hildreth, Tina Vaughn and Sabrina Vaughn; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 28, at the Indian Bayou United Methodist Church, Louisiana. Burial was at Garden of Memories in Metairie, La.

Matthew Barnes
Matthew Lee Barnes, 7, of Commerce, died Thursday at Egleston Hospital in Atlanta.
He was the son of Kevin and Kim Barnes of Commerce and was a student at Banks County Primary School.
Survivors in addition to his parents include a half-brother, Tyler Cruse, N.C.; grandparents, Gerald and Stella Barnes, Homer, and Ted and Ruth Burnette, Franklin, N.C.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 26, at Nicholson Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Smith and Jerry Barnes officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Egleston Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of Egleston Hospital.

‘Frank’ Dodd
Francis Marion “Frank” Dodd IV, 67, of Commerce, died Sunday, June 25, 2006, at DeKalb Medical Center.
He was born on July 28, 1938, in Fulton County, and was the son of the late Francis Marion Dodd III and Nellie Medlock Dodd. He was retired from the trucking industry, was a member of the Tucker Lodge #42, and was of the Baptist denomination. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Nell Pruitt Dodd, Commerce; a son, Michael Dodd, Commerce; sister, Shirley Ann Rowe, Marietta; two grandchildren, Karla and Alex Dodd, both of Commerce; and a niece, Linda White, Marietta.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 29, at 11 a.m., in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Stowe officiating. Burial will be in the Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville. The family will meet with friends Wednesday, June 28, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Hazel Pruitt
Hazel Roberts Pruitt, 86, of Commerce, died Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at BJC Medical Center.
Born on January 8, 1920, in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James Rainey and Exie Lee Roberts. She was retired from Oxford as a secretary and was a member of Harmony Christian Church. Mrs. Pruitt was preceded in death by her husband, Keffer Roger Pruitt.
Survivors include a nephew, Jimmy Roberts, Commerce; great-nephews, Jim Purcell, Athens, and John Purcell, Commerce; great-nieces, Janet Roberts, Athens and Mitzi Roberts Shirley, Commerce; two great-great-nephews; and two great-great-nieces.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 22, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Payne officiating. Burial was in the Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Harmony Christian Church.

Herman Smith
Herman E. Smith, 86, Commerce, died Saturday, June 10, 2006, at his residence.
A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Curtis A. and Bessie Howington Smith. He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Commerce. Mr. Smith was retired from the Department of Natural Resources Game and Fish Division. He was also employed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s office and Jefferson Police Department. Mr. Smith was a World War II Army Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Grady Smith and Bryant Smith, and one sister, Louise Seagraves.
Survivors include his wife, Juanita Massey Smith, Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Jerry C. Gray, Commerce; two sisters, Lanette Carter and Myrtice Clifton, both of Nicholson; two brothers, Charlie Smith and Dwayne Smith, both of Nicholson; three grandchildren, Sidney Scott Gray, Timothy Daren Gray and Jerri Camille Gray, all of Commerce; and a niece, Belva Marlow, Maysville.
The funeral was held Monday, June 12, 2006, at the chapel of Little Ward Funeral Home with Dr. David Bowen and the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in the Cabin Creek Church Cemetery.

John Thomas
John Franklin Thomas, 83, of Maysville, died Monday, June 19, 2006, following an extended illness.
Born on September 24, 1922, in Westfield, N.J., he was the son of the late Arthur Lewellyn and Amelia Brown Thomas. He was a retired electrical salesman and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater. He was also a member of the American Legion.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Agnes Morcum Thomas and his second wife, Margaret Rae Kreschke Thomas.
Survivors include daughters, Maureen Thomas, Athens, and Kathleen Braddy, Hollywood, Fla.; step-sons, Richard Rae, Cary, Ill., David Rae, San Antonio, Texas, Steven Rae, Elwood, Ind., and Robert Rae, Wisconsin; a sister, Betty Hubert, Virginia; a brother, Art Thomas, New Jersey; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 23, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Bronte Colbert officiating. Burial was in the Center Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

Pauline Sailors Baxter, 89, of Commerce, died Thursday, May 18, 2006.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Obe and Lurie Ingram Sailors. She was a retired nurses aide and a member of Winder First Baptist Church. Mrs. Baxter was preceded in death by her husband, Eddie L. Baxter; a son, Jerry Baxter; grandson, Edward Baxter; and son-in-law, Jimmy Hollifield.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Ann Baxter, Commerce; daughter, Shirley Hollifield, Commerce; granddaughter, Angelia Cowart, Hull; great-grandchildren, Serenity and Sydney Cowart.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 20, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. David Harbin officiating. Burial was in the Grey Hill Cemetery.
