New Braselton flag, seal named
Braselton has a new flag and seal to represent its growing town.
On Monday, the council picked the winning designs for the flag and seal design contest.
In March, the town received 22 entries for a new flag and 27 entries for a new seal. A number of the entries were received from students at West Jackson Primary School and Mill Creek High School, officials said at the time.
But the council didn’t have to go too far to find its winning flag design.
A flag design by council member Phil Spivey was named the winner. And the town seal winner was Art Finley, a former member of Braselton’s zoning board of appeals.
Spivey’s flag design features the town’s four counties — Jackson, Gwinnett, Hall and Barrow — with the town’s motto, “A past to preserve and a future to mold.”
Finley’s seal design features the Braselton Town Hall with the town’s founding year (1916), amid grapes — an honor to the town’s largest hotel and tourist destination, Chateau Elan.
Spivey initiated the flag and design contest several months ago. The winners were picked by the town council.
Council member Ralph Richardson Jr., however, said he was not aware that he was supposed to cast his vote by Friday’s deadline. He said he didn’t receive an e-mail reminding him of the deadline, because of computer problems.
OTHER BUSINESS
In other business on Monday, the Braselton Town Council:
•met in a closed-door meeting for 10 minutes to discuss “potential litigation.” No action was taken when the meeting was opened to the public.
•named its appointments to the newly-created Braselton Visitors Bureau Authority. The legislation signed by the governor last week requires that the visitors bureau include the town manager, a council member, a representative of the town’s largest hotel — which is Chateau Elan — and individuals who operate a business in the town limits. Named to the visitors bureau were: Jennifer Scott, town manager and clerk; council member Richardson; Doug Rollins of Chateau Elan; Dawn Thompson of Mayfield Dairy; and Kevin King, president of YearOne. Scott said the visitors bureau will advertise for its first meeting soon to establish its budget.
•approved funding opportunities for the new Braselton Library, which will include a “legacy campaign.” The donor opportunities will allow individuals to have their names placed on a plaque on book stacks, computer and reading pods, rocking chairs, the circulation desk and community meeting room for a specified price. Last week, the council said if the legacy campaign is fully successful, more than $80,000 will be raised for the new library. The council reduced the number of rocking chairs on the library’s wrap-around porch from 50 to 30. Rocking chairs in the legacy campaign will cost $300 each.
•authorized the mayor to sign two contracts with the Georgia Department of Transportation to provide high mast lighting at Braselton’s two interstate exit ramps. The DOT will pay for the design and installation of the lights and the town will use tourism funds to pay for the electric bill, which is expected to be about $50,000 annually for both exits.
•authorized the Braselton Police Department to donate a surplus vehicle to the City of Suwanee. The vehicle was purchased using seized drug money by the Braselton Police Department. Scott said the town has also donated several vehicles to Winder.
•declined to participate in the Gwinnett County CDBG and HOME program. Mayor Pat Graham said the 2000 Census showed that Braselton doesn’t have incomes in Gwinnett County low enough to participate in the program.
