Jefferson bypass wreck kills one
The Jefferson bypass intersection at Old Pendergrass Road was the scene of another fatal wreck Thursday when a tractor-trailer truck slammed into a Honda Accord about 6:30 p.m. One man was killed in the wreck, but no name has yet been released by the Georgia State Patrol.
The car apparently pulled out of the west side of Old Pendergrass Road toward Jefferson and crossed into the path of the truck, which was headed South on the bypass.
The controversial intersection has been the scene of numerous wrecks and several deaths since the bypass first opened.
Last year, a public outcry by citizens living near the intersection forced the City of Jefferson seek help from the Georgia DOT for a traffic signal. Earlier this year, the DOT agreed to place a traffic signal at the crossroads, but only after Jefferson built turning lanes on Old Pendergrass Road. The city has not yet begun construction of those turning lanes.
