The wife of a North Carolina truck driver was killed Wednesday night during an accident on State Highway 15/Hwy. 441.
At approximately 8:50 p.m., the Banks County Sheriff’s Office and EMS officials were called to the scene after a report of a woman being hit. Once they arrived, it was learned that Romona Frye Burns, 45, of Catawba, North Carolina, had been attempting to help her husband back his 18-wheeler onto State Route 15/Hwy. 441.
Tony Abron Frye had turned onto Industrial Drive but realizing he had made a wrong turn, was attempting to maneuver back onto State Route 15. Romona Frye Burns was in the roadway attempting to help direct him when she was struck by a vehicle traveling north, according to Banks County Sheriff Charles Chapman.
A life flight helicopter was contacted, but EMS officials decided to transport Romona Frye Burns to BJC Medical Center because of the severity of her injuries. She later died from injuries from the accident which threw her approximately 50 feet, according to a Georgia State Patrol report.
No charges have been filed against the driver of the vehicle, who was identified as a resident of Maysville, which struck Romona Frye Burns.
The accident was the second in three days in which a pedestrian was struck in that area of Banks Crossing. Two days earlier a woman was struck while attempting to cross the roadway at State Route 15/Hwy. 441 although her injuries were not life threatening.
