BCHS students excel in writing
Banks County High School students excelled on the Georgia High School Writing Test taken this past fall as 96 percent of the Banks County High School students taking the test passed, another highest passing mark for the area in the history of the school.
The school out-performed the state percentage passing of 94 percent, and other local systems’ average was also that of 94 percent. The writing scores have steadily risen over the past few years with 94 percent in 2004-2005 and 95 percent passing in 2005-2006.
“Integrating writing across the curriculum has provided students with experience in writing in this particular format,” said Banks County assistant superintendent Donna Reed. “Students are writing in math, science, social studies, and Language arts in all grade levels. The staff and students throughout the system are doing a wonderful job and are committed to being successful in this area. They are to be commended for their accomplishments.”
Students in the eleventh grade participate in the Georgia High School Writing Test and must pass the GHSWT to earn a regular education diploma. Students must produce a response to a persuasive writing prompt.
The test is administered three times a year (fall, spring and summer) so that students have multiple opportunities to take the test before the end of the twelfth grade. The main administration of the GHSWT takes place in the fall of the eleventh grade year.
