Alma Perry
Alma Perry, 87, of Statham, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, S.C.
She had lived in Jackson County for most of her life and was the daughter of the late Robert and Lunnie Plunkett Davis. She was a member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church and was a retired seamstress, having been employed by H&H Manufacturing Company and Barrow Manufacturing Company.
Mrs. Perry was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Perry; and a son, Herbert Elder Perry.
Survivors include children, Bud Perry, Statham, Sue Griffiths, Lexington, and Ann McCune, Athens; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 3, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home with the Revs. Steve Warren, Larry Youngblood and Bud McDonald officiating. Burial was in Mt. Tabor Baptist Church Cemetery.

Walter Rothman
Walter Russell Rothman, 91, of Nicholson, died Thursday, September 27, 2007.
Born in Hot Springs, Ark., he was the son of the late Kelly and Olive Foster Rothman. He was a retired Minister, serving in the ministry for 50 years, and was a member of Jefferson United Pentecostal Church. Mr. Rothman was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Rothman.
Survivors include his wife, Willa Mae Stewart Rothman, Nicholson; daughters and sons-in-law, Donna Lujan, Elaine and Howard Cathey, Rosie and David King, all of Nicholson, Linda and Joe Nelson, Rome, Texas; brother, Ed Rothman, Virginia; 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 30, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Gary Hosch officiating. Burial was in the Jefferson United Pentecostal Church cemetery. Pallbearers were Howard Cathey, Aaron Cathey, Brandon Smith, David King, Rudy Domingquez and Bill Vigliotte.

Ashton Strickland
Ashton Leigh Strickland, 20, of Danielsville, died Sunday, September 28, 2007.
She was the daughter of Scott and Pam Strickland of Danielsville.
She led a lifelong fight with a crippling disease, but she always had a big smile for everyone. She was very special to all who knew her and left a lasting impression on your heart, loved ones stated. Now she is in heaven, where she is free to walk and run and do so many things she couldn’t do on earth. She was preceded in death by a grandfather, Thomas Meadows.
Survivors in addition to her parents include a sister, Torey Strickland, Danielsville; brother, Preston Strickland, Danielsville; grandparents, Faye Meadows, Royston, Bruce and Linda Witcher, Colbert; great-grandmother, Altie Rice, Danielsville.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 1, at New Haven Holiness Church with the Rev. Alan Wofford officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Sadie Bell Wiley
Sadie Bell Wiley, 64, of Commerce, died Saturday, September 29, 2007.
Survivors include Richard, Michael and James Wiley, Valerie Lumpkin; brothers, Lamtine, Georga and Cecial Jarrells; Anner and Diama Jarrells, Georgie Sorrells; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Emanoil Datcu
Emanoil Datcu, 57, of Jefferson, died suddenly on Saturday, September 29, 2007.
He was a native of Constanta, Romania, and had lived in the Jefferson area for the past year. He was self-employed in the construction industry and was a member of the Romanian Seventh Day Adventist Church in Lawrenceville.
Survivors include his wife, Gabriela Datcu, Jefferson; daughters and sons-in-law, Manuela and Ionut Radu, Memphis, Tenn., Lavinia and Hendel Radulea, Jefferson; grandchild, Phillip Radulea; brother, Enoh Datcu, Romania; brother-in-law, Marian Popescu, Romania; father and mother-in-law, Gheorghe and Mimi Popescu, Romania.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday, October 6, at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. Burial will be at Hamilton Mill Memorial Gardens.

Thomas Martin
Thomas Fletcher Martin, 83, of Jefferson, a retiree of Jefferson Mills and a United States Army veteran, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007.
Mr. Martin had served as a machine operator at Jefferson Mills for 40 years and following his retirement was a part-time employee of The Jackson Herald for 10 years. He was a member of the St. Paul First Baptist Church, Jefferson, where he served on the deacon board for 35 years, and as Sunday School superintendent. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Martin was married to Elizabeth Lester Martin, who preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a devoted wife, Mrs. Addie Grace Martin, Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Elaine Joyce and Doug Dowdy, Athens; sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Patricia Martin, Jefferson, Phillip Dale and Sue Martin, Gainesville; two grandchildren raised in the home, Tiffany Rakestraw and Keiron Rakestraw, both of Jefferson; five step-children, Warren and Linda Lester, Clifton and Leatrice Lester, all of Athens, Linda and Dean Oliver, Norcross, Allison Pittman, Jefferson, Franklin and Tasha Lester, Seattle, Wash.; sister, Lula Mae Morehead, Jefferson; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 29, in the St. Paul First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marvin Simmons officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Nephews served as pallbearers and the deacons of the church served as honorary pallbearers.

Peggy Tolbert
Peggy Lynn Whitmire Tolbert, 72, of Jefferson, died Thursday, September 27, 2007.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late John Paul and Katherine McDougal Whitmire. She was a retired production technician and a member of Galilee Christian Church. Mrs. Tolbert was preceded in death by her husband, Nelson Tolbert.
Survivors include daughters, Pam Tolbert, Jefferson, Kaye Reynolds, Winterville; a son, Chuck Tolbert, Jefferson; sisters, Pat Carter, Colbert, Mildred Youmans, Swainsboro, and Joan Wilson, Jefferson; brothers, Bill Whitmire and Charlie Whitmire, both of Jefferson, Mike Whitmire, Newborn; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William Hill
William Glenn Hill, 87, of Hoschton, died Saturday, September 29, 2007, following a brief illness.
He was born in Jackson County and was the son of the late Alec and Ellen Durham Hill. He was a retired mail carrier and tractor mechanic. Mr. Hill was a veteran of World War II serving in Germany and was preceded in death by his wife, Inez Berryman Hill.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie Hill, Jimmy and Ann Hill, and Doyle and Pam Hill, all of Hoschton; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special nephew Victor Stewart.

Deloris Bradford Norris, 59, of Nicholson, died Saturday, September 29, 2007.
Born in St. Petersburg, Fla., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Bradford. She was a member of Huff Grove Baptist Church and was a master gardener, according to loved ones.

Mary Sue Hunter, 78, of Winder, died Saturday, September 29, 2007.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Lena Jacks Finch. She was a member of Midway Christian Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hunter.

Ruby Hicks
Ruby Hicks, 93, of Hoschton, died Thursday, September 27, 2007.
She was born in Forsyth County and was the daughter of the late Sanford and Ola B. Williams. She was a member of Winder First Baptist Church, former member of Jackson Hill Baptist Church in Atlanta, and was a member of Hoschton Women’s Civic Club. Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Hicks.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Hazel and Charles Cochran, Hoschton; and a sister, Allene Major, Woodstock.

‘Jim’ Young
James G. “Jim” Young, 63, of Murrayville, died Saturday, September 29, 2007, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
He was born on October 3, 1943, and was raised in Gainesville. He was the son of the late Grover and Lucy Young.
Survivors include his wife, June Young; mother-in-law, Louise Truelove; children, Debbie, Alan, Phyllis and Phillip; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven special cousins; and special friends, Larry Lance, C.H. Campbell and Bob Jenkins.
He was owner of Jim Young Construction Inc. in Cleveland and Statesboro for 30 years. He was cherished and loved by all who knew him and his thoughtfulness and generosity will be sorely missed by the many lives he touched, according to loved ones.

Amy Celeste “Cissy” Hansford Talbot, 26, of Jefferson, died Friday, September 28, 2007.
A resident of Oconee County most of her life, she was the daughter of Billy and Grace Coker of Watkinsville. She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Billie Grace Talbot.
Survivors in addition to her parents, include her husband, Jason Talbot; two sisters, Michelle Kirk, Bogart, and Lynn Hansford Bloodsaw, Athens; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Francene Reynolds
Francene B. Reynolds, 59, of Commerce, died Thursday, September 27, 2007, at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, following an extended illness.
She was the daughter of Rosemond Teter of Tampa, Fla., was a resident of Commerce, Banks County since 2003, and was retired from Publix Supermarket, Inc. Mrs. Reynolds was preceded in death by a brother, Robin Teter.
Survivors in addition to her mother, include her husband of 15 years, William “Bill” Reynolds, Commerce; sister, Gayle Gonzalez, Tampa. Fla.; brother, Dwight Teter, Miami, Fla.; Thomas and Taylor Reynolds, Greer, S.C., Robert and Ruth Reynolds, Commerce, James and Gail Coleman, Ocala, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Herbert Murphy
Herbert C. Murphy, 87, of Gainesville, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007, at Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville, following an extended illness.
He was born in Jackson County and was the son of the late George Columbus and Mamie Lyle Murphy. He was retired from Georgia Department of Transportation after 26 years, and was a member of the Georgia Department of Transportation Retirees Association for 22 years. He was a member of Talmo Baptist Church. Mr. Murphy was preceded in death by three brothers.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille Davis Murphy, Gainesville; sons, Douglas Franklin Murphy, Pendergrass, Bobby J. Murphy, Gainesville; daughters, Martha A. Owen and Mary M. Kesler, both of Gainesville, and Patricia J. Mary Bryant
Mary Ruth Jones Bryant, 75, of Canon, died Monday, October 1, 2007, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.
She was born in Jackson County on August 13, 1932, and was the daughter of the late Ira and Berdie Huff Jones. She was a waitress and was of the holiness faith.
Survivors include her husband, Horace R. Bryant, Canon; a son, David Bryant, Hartwell; daughters, Virginia Bruce, Pendergrass, and Judy Reddish, Jefferson; sister, Tina Kinne, Rome; eight grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Minnie Mae Chandler
Minnie Mae Chandler, 96, died Tuesday, September 4, 2007, in Athens, Clarke County.
At an early age she joined the Sardis Presbyterian Church in Jefferson. She later became a member of the Bethesda Temple Apostolic Faith Church in Athens, where she enjoyed running through the church praising her God, and beautified the church grounds and her home by planting beautiful flowers, which she loved so much. She was a devoted and loving mother, sister, and grandmother, according to loved ones.
Mrs. Chandler was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Lee Chandler; four brothers, Norman, Fletcher, Eston and J.C. Wilhite; two sisters, Ardis Elder and Anna Lee Shields.
Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Ruby Nell and Billy Gathright, Jefferson, Ardie Bell Law, Commerce, and Doris Ann Moon, Athens; one step-daughter and spouse, Betty and Lewis Avery, Augusta; sons, Edward Lee Chandler and Jimmy Wade Chandler, both of Jefferson; 22 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
