Cheryle Lee
Cheryle James Lee, 59, of Comer, formerly of Eastanollee, died Monday, October 22, 2007, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens.
She was born on October 31, 1947, in Franklin County, the daughter of the late Ellen Lucas James Thomas and Edward O’Neal James. She was a member of Toms Creek Baptist Church, the Esther Sunday School Class, and was former chairman of Toms Creek Tape Ministry for three years. Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by brothers, Paul Anthony James and Hayden James; and a sister, Arlene Gay.
Survivors include sons, James Gordon and Edward Gordon, both of Colbert; a daughter, Deserree’ Chandler, Colbert; sisters, Harriet Gonzales, Jacksonville, Fla., and Debbie Kirkpartick, Thonotosassa, Fla.; a brother, O’Neal James, Savannah; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 25, at Toms Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Clack Stubbs, Wayne Marcus and Jerrell Beatty officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Whitt Sandlin
Whitt Gabriel Sandlin, 23, of Cumming, died Sunday, October 21, 2007.
He was the son of Guyrus Sandlin of Lithonia and Jane Sandlin of Lakeland. He was a graduate of Forsyth Central High School and attended The Art Institute of Atlanta.
Survivors in addition to his parents include a brother, Travis Sandlin, Kennesaw; grandparents, Elaine and Tommy Davis, Cumming, and Steve Whittington, Commerce; great-grandmother, Tommie Davis, Tunnell Hill; aunts and uncle, Terri Whittington, Royston, Chase and Lisa Duer, Woodstock; cousins, Anna, Sara, Rebecca and Cody; and a number of other aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives.

Dorothy Seagraves
Dorothy Virginia Seagraves, 87, of Hull, died Saturday, October 20, 2007.
A native of Madison County, she was the daughter of the late Joe and Fannie Johnson Hendricks. She was a member of Meadow Baptist Church, was retired from General Times, was a seamstress, and a hairdresser. Mrs. Seagraves was preceded in death by her husband, Billie Seagraves.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and DeAnn Seagraves and Mike and Debbie Seagraves; a sister, Catherine Glenn; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Becky Ann Drake, 41, of Carlton, died Friday, October 19, 2007.
A native of Elberton, she was the daughter of W.G. and Betty Kidd Drake of Carlton.

Mary Gaddis
Mary Hunsinger Gaddis, 76, of Danielsville, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Bogart.
Born in Madison County on July 19, 1931, she was the daughter of the late George Washington and Judy Martin Hunsinger. She was a homemaker and attended Macedonia Holiness Church. Mrs. Gaddis was preceded in death by her husband, Howard “Bo” Gaddis; and a daughter, Peggy Dowell Barber.
Survivors include sons, Howard Gaddis Jr., Billy Gaddis, George Gaddis and Greg Gaddis, all of Danielsville; daughters, Becky Anglin, Danielsville, Donna Hunsinger, Comer, and Wanda Callaway, Carlton; a brother, T.J. Huntsinger, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Gordon
Dorothy Toney Gordon, 86, of Commerce, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at BJC Medical Center in Commerce.
Born in Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late James Robert and Dora Lee Wilson Toney. She was a quilter for the Senior Citizen Center. Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her husband, John Berry Gordon; children, Grace Varsekelis, Betty Socha and Jimmy Gordon.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, John and Janice Gordon, Commerce; daughters and sons-in-law, Polly and Tommy Brown, Emily and David Gaines, all of Commerce; brother, Warren Toney, Commerce; sisters, Mary Steed, Commerce, Elizabeth Bickel, Macon; seventeen grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou O’Kelley
Mary Lou Gordon O’Kelley, 86, of Danielsville, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.
She was born on May 21, 1921, in Madison County, the daughter of the late Alvin Jackson Winfrey and Pearl Huntsinger Winfrey. She was a homemaker and member of Blue Stone Baptist Church.
Mrs. O’Kelley was a known craftsperson. She made homemade crafts and sold a variety of quilt patterns over the years. During the years 1953-1957, she wrote many songs, which were copyrighted, family members stated. Artists Pee Wee Pruitt, Peggy Pritchet and Sandy Turner sang these songs.
Survivors include a daughter, Jimmie Lou Gordon, Danielsville; sisters, Evelyn Hanley and Helen Horne, both of Danielsville, and Bonnie King, Stockbridge; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Jimmie Lou Gordon
Jimmie Lou Gordon, 66, of Danielsville, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at her residence.
She was born on May 11, 1941, in Madison County, the daughter of the late Jim Boyd Gordon and the late Mary Lou Winfrey Gordon O’Kelley. She was retired from the textile industry and was a Baptist.
Ms. Gordon was afflicted for much of her life with crippling arthritis. Even though she suffered daily, she still made sure she went to work in various sewing plants. She made friends over the years, but more importantly, she became “Meme” to her granddaughters. Though there were days she could barely move, she still made sure to make time for the girls, loved ones stated.
Family members also stated she was known to be outspoken. If you knew her, you know she said whatever she thought.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Bowles, Danielsville; and two grandchildren.

Mazelle Smith
Mazelle Smith, 90, of Royston, died Thursday, October 18, 2007, at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston.
She was born in Franklin County on February 27, 1917, and was the daughter of the late Mack and Maude Bryant Westbrook and was a seamstress. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Olin Smith.
Survivors include a brother, Hoyt Westbrook, Canon; and sister, Dorothy Parham, Royston.

Mary Jo Minish, 64, of Maysville, died Sunday, October 21, 2007.
She was born in Jackson County, the daughter of the late Doyle and Wretha Mae Owensby Hooper. Mrs. Minish was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph Minish.

Timmy Wood, 27, of Nicholson, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Born in Jackson County, he was the son of Billy Joe Wood of Nicholson and the late Shirley Gaddis Wood.

Leroy Bruce, 78, of Jefferson, died Sunday, October 21, 2007, at BJC Nursing Home in Commerce.
Born in Banks County on September 16, 1929, he was the son of the late Homer and Mary Lou Love Bruce. He was a retired store owner and member of Church of God.

Evelyn L. Baker, 75, of Maysville, died Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.
She was born in Banks County, the daughter of the late Claude and Roxie Gosnell Leachman. She was a retired supervisor with Westclox. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by a sister, Charlie Lou Rice; brother, Coy Leachman; and two grandsons, Daniel Baker and William Vickery.

Frances Kidd
Martha Frances Bradford Kidd, 86, Lavonia, died Friday, October 19, 2007.
She was born on July 11, 1921, in Carlton, the daughter of the late Phil R. Bradford Sr. and Nona Rucker Bradford.
She attended Carlton schools and Athens Business College. She worked as a secretary for Lavonia Manufacturing Company. and worked for many years as the secretary for the Lavonia First Baptist Church. Throughout her life, she was active in local school, community and civic organizations. She was a lifelong Democrat as well as founding and 50-year member of the Lavonia Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club. Mrs. Kidd was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alexander Kidd Jr.; and a brother, Phil R. Bradford Jr.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, David Alexander and Jane Kidd, Athens, Douglas Bradford and Penley Kidd, Atlanta, James Thomas and Laura Kidd, Carbondale, Ill., and Charles Philip Kidd, Lavonia; five grandchildren; and best friend, Betty Plesko, Sacramento, Calif.

Shirley B. Bell, 71, of Comer, died Sunday, October 21, 2007.
She was the daughter of the late Homer and Panola Booth and was a member of Collier Baptist Church.

Barbarianne Russell
Barbarianne Gaulding Russell, of Colbert, died at home surrounded by family and friends on Wednesday, October 17, 2007, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. She is the daughter of the late Harold F. and Lola Mae Payne Gaulding. Barbarianne was born November 12, 1940. She was a 1958 graduate of Madison County High School and received her bachelor of science in Elementary Education from the University of Georgia in 1962, where she was a member of Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. She taught school in Ohio, Georgia and Michigan in the 1960s.
Barbarianne was a lifelong member of Colbert United Methodist Church. She was faithful first to Christ in all she did. She served in many leadership roles, Chair of the Administrative Board and Council, Lay Leader, President of UMW, Sunday School Teacher of the J.K. Brookshire Class, Choir member and Church Historian. She was also a great Christian speaker and a student of the Bible.
Barbarianne served as a Supervisor of The Broad River Soil and Water Conservation District since 1982, and missed only 1 district meeting during that time. She served as chairman of the 7 County District for a number of years and served on the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission Board for 4 years. She was a Board advisor for Emmanuel College at Royston, Ga.
Barbarianne was involved in improving the City of Colbert for over 50 years. She was one of the driving forces and instrumental in the development of many of the following projects: Colbert History Book, Bicentennial Celebration, Cemetery Care, Historical District Designation, Beautification and Improvement Club, which included planting of trees, shrubs and cannas, The Garden of Remembrance, organized the first July 4th celebration of which she was in charge of arts and crafts for 38 years, Canna Pageant, Colbert Museum, City of Colbert Fountain, Colbert City Planning and Colbert Industrial Development. She served as chairperson or president of most all of these organizations and committees.
Barbarianne served as president of the Madison County Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Authority for 16 years, retiring in 2002.
Survivors include her husband, Billy; daughter, Julia Amanda (Mandy) Roush of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer Anne and Cliff Mason of Colbert and their children, Kayla and Jacob Kubitzky and MaKayla and Blaze Mason; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Donald Holmes of Cullman, Alabama and their children, Sam, Sydney and Luke; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kim Russell of Colbert and their children, Jonathan, Ben, Caroline, Joseph and Thomas; brother, Harold Gaulding, Jr. and his wife, Linda; nieces, Debra Gaulding and Donna Jordan.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 19, 2007, at Colbert First Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Haralson, Brad Wilson and Tony Cowan officiating. Burial was in Colbert Cemetery.

Dwayne Dean
Lee Dwayne Dean, 82, of Athens, died Friday, October 19, 2007.
A native of Madison County, he was the son of the late Grover Lee Dean and Susie Mae Dean Long. He was a member and deacon of Forest Heights Baptist Church and also attended the Moser Sunday School Class and the Senior Saints. He served with the Gideon’s International for many years and was retired from Independent Life and Accident Insurance Company after 35 years of service. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army. Mr. Dean was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Louise Dean; a brother, Horace O. Long; and a step-father, Willie W. Long.
Loved ones stated he loved his family, church and most of all his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was known for his big garden and loved picking and selling the vegetables he grew.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Janice D. and Thomas B. Marable, Athens; sisters, Emma Mabry, Pine Mountain, and Clara Strickland, Fayetteville; grandchildren and spouses, Brian Lee and Shannon Marable, Winder, and Kevin Thomas and Amanda Marable, Athens; great-grandchildren, Deanna Nicole Pruitt, Joanna Kristine Pruitt, Anna Grace Marable and Sara Kate Marable; aunt, Idele Short, Kannapolis, N.C.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Martha Self
Martha Rose Self, 90, of Colbert, died Sunday, October 21, 2007.
A native of South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Robert Pinkney and Enoree Brown Ussery. She was retired from Colbert Manufacturing Company, where she had been a seamstress, and was a member of Colbert Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the choir, former chairman of the Senior Adults and spent many hours visiting with the shut-ins of the church. Mrs. Self was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest H. Self; son, Ernest Self; and son-in-law, Peewee Pruett.
Loved ones stated she was loved and respected by her church family and all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 20, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home with the Revs. Dennis Kesler and Bobby Ivester officiating. Burial was in the Cary Memorial Gardens.

Gertrude Grizzle
Gertrude Kitchens Grizzle, 77, of Carnesville, died Monday, December 18, 2006.
She was born in Franklin County on April 27, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Hoyt and Myrtle Nations Kitchens. She was a member of the Gordon Church, was a homemaker, and a beloved mother, according to loved ones. Mrs. Grizzle was preceded in death by a son, Mike Grizzle; grandson, Avery Sorrow; and sister, Hazel Slater.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Grizzle Sr., Carnesville; sons, Randall Evans, Maysville, Frank Grizzle Jr. and Kenneth Grizzle, both of Danielsville; daughters, Rebecca Hunter, Carnesville, Janet Bakunas, Commerce, and Anita Evans, Danielsville; brothers, J.D. Kitchens, Nicholson, L.B. Kitchens, Commerce, Gartrell Kitchens, Center Community, and Howard Kitchens, Baldwin; sisters, Ethelene Brock, Braselton, Eula Mae Clark, Athens, Johnnie Jarrard, Eastanollee, and Lutrell Booth, Nicholson; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
