Lady Hawks win state golf championship
The Mill Creek girls’ varsity golf team did something this week that no other Mill Creek varsity team has ever done – win a state championship.
Until now, Mill Creek’s only other state championship had been in a club level sport.
In just their second trip to the state tournament, the Lady Hawks took the AAAAA title Monday afternoon at Jekyll Island.
Mill Creek head coach Ben Hanes said winning the title felt great.
“The girls have had such a great season,” he said. “It’s just the perfect finish. We played five 18-hole tournaments and we’ve won all five. It’s just been a fantastic year.”
Mill Creek junior Emilie Burger won the individual state title with her one-under-par 73. Teammate Jennifer Nam shot an 81 to give the Lady Hawks a team score of 154.
Season-long nemesis North Gwinnett finished nine strokes back with a 163.
After the girls’ tournament finished, the new state champions headed over to the Oleander course to support the boys’ varsity as they concluded their 36-hole tournament.
In just their first trip to state, the Hawks scored a top five finish.
The boys finished fifth with a 36-hole total of 605. Harrison won the state title with a 570. Lowndes and Peachtree Ridge tied for second with team scores of 591.
Hanes said for the boys to finish in the top five in their first year at state was fantastic.
Kevin Lee led Mill Creek with a 144. Lee shot 71 on the first 18 holes and 73 on the second 18 to finish third in individual scoring. Shawn Yim finished three strokes back with a 147.
Harrison High School’s James White took the state individual title with a 36-hole score of 132. Seth Reeves of Peachtree Ridge placed second with his score of 143.
