County employee charged with theft of senior center funds
An employee in the Madison County Board of Commissioners’ office was arrested last week for allegedly taking money that was found in the office of the late senior center director, Eloise McCurley.
Madison County Deputy Clerk Melinda Watson Spence, 40, 155 Edgewood Drive, Danielsville, was charged with one felony count of theft by taking on Tuesday, April 29, by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
She was arrested and booked in the Madison County Jail, where she was later released on a $2,250 bond.
The arrest was the result of an investigation into approximately $1,700 of missing senior center funds that were transported to the Madison County Government Complex but never deposited.
Madison County Sheriff Clayton Lowe requested that the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conduct an investigation into the missing funds in March of 2008 when it was discovered the funds weren’t deposited.
GBI agent Jim Fullington said he could not discuss how the GBI determined that Spence was responsible for the theft.
“We’re not allowed to talk about that,” he said.
But Fullington said no one else is suspected in the crime.
“At this time there is no indication that anyone else was involved,” said Fullington.
