Mill Creek’s Lady Hawks begin summer league play

Nineteen rising sophomores and juniors began summer league play Monday at Mill Creek High School. The Lady Hawks took on the Duluth Lady Wildcats in the first of twelve games to be played this month.
Mill Creek head coach Kelly Murdock said summer league is a good opportunity to work with the younger players while the majority of the rising seniors play travel ball.
“This is a great chance to let some other people get some playing time,” Murdock said.
Though the summer league games are not important in terms of the team’s record, they are a good opportunity for the younger players to demonstrate their skills as they compete for starting positions on the team.
After Monday’s game, Murdock encouraged her players to hustle, look sharp and stay focused on getting better.
“The point of summer league is to learn,” she said.
Murdock said the team will spend a lot of time working on fundamentals over the next few weeks.
“We’re trying to work on the little things and hopefully get ourselves in a position so that when the season rolls around, we’ll be ready to go,” she said.
The three time defending region champions have every reason to be optimistic heading into next season. The Lady Hawks graduated just four seniors this year, only one of which was a starter.
Despite this advantage, Murdock does not take anything for granted.
“We’ll see,” she said. “It depends.”
The Lady Hawks begin team workouts in July. The first game of the 2008 season is scheduled for mid-August.
Summer league play continues Thursday, June 5 at Collins Hill. The Lady Hawks will take the field against South Forsyth at 2 p.m.
