Lawmen square off for sheriff
BY KRISTI REED
The two Republican candidates for Barrow County Sheriff have a lot in common. Both Murray Kogod and Jud Smith are long-term law enforcement officers. Both say they will be tough on crime. They even share the goal of seeking state accreditation for the sheriff’s department.
Kogod, a major and chief deputy in the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, said his office has worked hard to improve the quality of services for Barrow County citizens while managing spending effectively.
Kogod said his plans include a Barrow County crime task force where city and county departments will work together to solve crimes. Kogod also said he would like to establish precincts in each Barrow County fire station to improve delivery of services.
“I am asking you for the privilege to continue to serve and protect in your community by electing me your sheriff,” he said.
SMITH
Winder police officer Jud Smith said he wants to know that Barrow County tax dollars are being spent effectively.
“With growth, we have an increase in gang related crime, drug activity, domestic violence, internet crimes against our children, juvenile offenses, identity theft,” he said. “I want to know our tax dollars are being spent wisely to target these problems.”
Smith said it is important that calls be answered quickly and efficiently. Smith also emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation and proactive measures to combat crime.
“I want the citizens to know crime will not be tolerated,” he said. “If you’re a criminal in Barrow County, we’re coming for you.”
Kogod and Smith will also join Democratic candidate James Bonnemer at the Barrow Chamber of Commerce candidate forum scheduled for June 23 in Winder. The forum will be held at the Colleen O. Williams theatre at 6:30 p.m.
