Elsie Fletcher
Elsie Stally Fletcher, 81, of Nicholson, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospice House in Athens.
Survivors include her husband, William; a sister, Connie Downing; children, Carol Abersoll, William Fletcher, Connie Over, Dorothy Edwards; grandchildren, Donna Ledford, Jennifer Davis, Benjamin Edwards; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m., at Emmanuel Church in Athens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in her name to St. Mary’s Hospice House, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, Ga. 30604.
Cremation Society of Georgia is in charge of arrangements.

Russell Brihn
Russell Brihn, 78, of Maysville, died Friday, June 6, 2008, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Born in Polk County, Wis., he was the son of the late August and Bertha Gerlot Brihn. He was a retired millwright.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Boswell Brihn, Maysville; sons, Robert Brihn, Danridge, Tenn., Allen Brihn, Waterford, Wis.; daughters, Catherine Brihn, Spooner, Wis., Mary Ellen Koss, Gleencoe, Minn., Lisa Brihn, Bloomington, Minn.; brother, Leo Brihn, Amery, Wis.; sister, Marion Anderson and Irene Larson, both of Clear Lake, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 8, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral home with the Rev. Grady Jordan officiating.

Lawrence Wood
Lawrence Judson Wood Sr., 77, of Watkinsville, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008.
A native of Oconee County, he was the son of the late Leo and Nettie Mae Savage Wood and was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelly Wood Anderson. Mr. Wood was a veteran, having served in the United States Air Force.
Survivors include his lifelong companion, Polly Fields, Watkinsville; children, Chelsea Wood and Lawrence Judson Wood Jr., both of Watkinsville, Karen Freeman, Athens, Ricky Fielding, Statham; sisters, Loretta Allen, Rutledge, June Carithers, Nicholson, Jeanette “Jan” Christian, Watkinsville; brother, Doyle Wood, Athens; and five grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Otis McNeal
Otis H. McNeal, 80, of Braselton, died Saturday, June 7, 2008.
He was born in Jackson County, and was the son of the late Rev. Jack McNeal and Bessie Henderson McNeal. He was a member of Walnut Fork Baptist Church and was a retired sales manager with Gold Kist Pork. He was the owner of Mac’s Garage.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Isabell Holland McNeal, Braselton; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Rick Rogers, Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Cheryl McNeal, Bradley, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 9, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Rev. Ricky Thrasher officiating. Burial was in Walnut Fork Baptist Church cemetery. Honored as pallbearers were T.L. Gordon, Hugh Gordon, John Boone, Larry Stancil, Larry Beck, Chip McEver. Honored as honorary pallbearers were Lloyd McEver, Robert McEver, Wylie McEver, Joe Kinney, Donald Sorrells, Bill Cook, Dub Davis, Rick Murphy, Ray Gunter, Pat Graham and Arlen Berryman.

Charles Shirley
Charles Glenn Shirley, 77, of Jefferson, died Saturday, June 7, 2008.
He was born in Jackson County, the son of the late Leo B. and Lauree Park Shirley. He was a Mason, a member of the Bethany United Methodist Church, a retired general contractor, and owner of Charles Shirley, Inc. Mr. Shirley was preceded in death by brothers, Dow, Cecil, Richard and Samuel Shirley; and a sister, Lanelle Vandiver.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Payne Shirley, Jefferson; sons and daughters-in-law, Buster and Pat Shirley, Chris and Sharon Shirley, all of Jefferson; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Phillip Patterson, Jefferson; brothers, Gene Shirley, Winder, Ben Shirley, Commerce; sisters, Betty Lord and Carolyn Merk, both of Commerce, Marion Salter, Forest Park; grandchildren, and spouse, Bess and Chad Barnett, Ben Shirley, Aubrey Shirley, Natalie Shirley, all of Jefferson; great-grandchildren, Gradeigh Barnett, Lucy Barnett; and a long time companion border collie, “Nookie”.
A celebration service was held Monday, June 9, at the Bethany United Methodist Church with Chris Shirley officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Honored as pallbearers were John Boy Stringer, Buster Shirley, Chris Shirley, Ben Shirley, Aubrey Shirley and Phillip Patterson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 3205 Brockton Rd., Jefferson, Ga. 30549.

Lorraine Little
Lorraine Pressley Little, 68, of Jefferson, died Saturday, June 7, 2008.
She was born on March 11, 1940, in Abbeville, S.C., the daughter of the late Joe Bill and Dora Ann Barrett Pressley. She was a homemaker and was Baptist. Mrs. Little was preceded in death by her husband, John Eathel Little; and a son, Jacob Little.
Survivors include daughters, Ruby Campbell, Jefferson, Barbara Freeman, Carnesville, Brenda Flynn, Gainesville; grandchildren raised in the home, John Little and Carrie Sims; sister, Barbara Jean Pressley, California; brothers, Ralph Pressley, Melvin Pressley, Eddie Pressley, Franklin Pressley, all of Chester, S.C., B.L. Pressley, Athens, Donnie Pressley, Commerce, Willie Pressley, Pendergrass, and Roger Pressley, Nicholson; 13 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home with the Revs. Melvin Pressley and Darrell Smith officiating. Burial was in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.

‘Okie’ Flanagan
Horace Oneal “Okie” Flanagan, 64, of Winterville, died Saturday, June 7, 2008.
A native and lifelong resident of Clarke County, he was the son of the late Horace R. and Frances Miller Flanagan. He was employed for the last 10 years with C.C. Dickson Heating and Air Conditioning. He was an avid University of Georgia football fan and was also a locally recognized softball player for many years.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda F. Flanagan; daughter and son-in-law, Samantha and Kevin Backer, Commerce; granddaughter, Jessica Backer; sister, Elvena Smart, Bishop; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held Monday, June 9, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Davison officiating.

Paula Mitchell
Paula Sonja Hunt Mitchell, 69, of Athens, died Saturday, June 7, 2008.
She was born on March 29, 1939, in Troup County, the daughter of the late William and Vera Smith Hunt. She was a retired accountant with the Corps of Engineers and was Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Sonya Seagraves, Athens; and granddaughter, Amanda Seagraves, Athens.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, June 10, in the Evans Memory Gardens with the Rev. Doyle Sims officiating.
Memorials contributions may be made to the Commerce Veterinary Hospital, 1012 S. Broad St., Commerce, GA 30529.

Clifford Palmer
Clifford P. Palmer, 86, of Loganville, died Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the Our Heritage Residential Care Home.
He was born in Oglethorpe County, the son of the late William Oscar and Annie Barnett Palmer. He was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II and was a retired State of Georgia Wildlife Ranger for 34 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. Mr. Palmer was preceded in death by a son, Paul Palmer; brothers, George Palmer and Charlie William Palmer; and sisters, Cathel Chester, Annie Ruth Ward and Billie Frances Palmer.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Lovell Palmer, Loganville; sons, Jeff Palmer, Loganville, Peter Palmer, San Antonio, Texas, and Rex Palmer, Auburn; a brother, John Palmer, Nicholson; sisters, Hilda Watkins and Myrtle Fouche, both of Nicholson, Lottie Moore, Jacksonville, Fla., Ruby Borkman, Alpharetta, Linda Middleton, Hayesville, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 12, at 3 p.m., at River of Life Worship Center in Nicholson with the Revs. Mike Stowers and Vernon Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Howington Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 11, from 7 to 9 p.m.

Anna Burton
Anna M. Burton, 80, of Commerce, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at BJC Hospital in Commerce.
Born in Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Henry Daily and Cora Ada Shown Myers. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Frank Burton Jr.
Survivors include daughters, Linda T. McGinnis, Charleston, S.C., Janet Childress, Hernando, Miss., Sandra B. Pounds, Hoschton; a son, John F. Burton III, Hernando, Miss.; brother, Walter J. Myers, Johnson City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Lance McGinnis, Kelly M. Thiel, Joshua Childress, Deb Pounds, Heather Wright; great-grandchildren, Rachel McGinnis, Colby Wright, Marley Thiel.
Graveside services were held Saturday, June 7, at the Floral Hills Cemetery in Tucker.

Annabell Murdock
Annabell Mobley Murdock, 96, of Commerce, died Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at BJC Medical Center in Commerce.
She was born on July 30, 1911, the daughter of the late Ike and Olive Howze Mobley. She was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Murdock was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Cecil Murdock; and two young children.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Buddy C. and Clarice Murdock, Commerce; brother, Don Mobley, Archer City, Texas; grandson and wife, Steven and Gina Murdock, Colorado; granddaughter and husband, Luanne and Kenneth Pendley, Commerce; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews in Texas.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 6, at the Beaverdam Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Payne officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Tuan Tarpkins
Tuan Diamelen Tarpkins, 34, of Atlanta, formerly of Commerce, died Monday, June 2, 2008.
She was the daughter of R.D. Newells and Jennifer Staples.
Survivors in addition to her parents, include children, Brittney, Daisha, Allona and Elijah; siblings, Simcimilla, Dontaze, Chaka, Skyy and Joel.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 7, at Chapel Forestglen Mortuary. Burial was at the family cemetery.

Betty Ann McDaniel
Betty Ann McDaniel, 64, of Winterville, died Monday, June 9, 2008.
A native of Clarke County, she was the daughter of the late Emory and Winona Duncan Jones. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. McDaniel Jr.; sisters, Lillian Jones and Ethel Bridges; and brothers, Billy Jones and Grady Jones.
Survivors include her companion, Charles Lester, Nicholson; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Catherine McDaniel, Crawford; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Darrell McElreath, Danielsville; siblings, Vivian Bradberry, Athens, Frances and Eugene Burkhalter, Winterville, Robert Jones, Danielsville, Charles and Mildred Jones and Clifford and Effie Jones, Lynda and Walter Smith and Carol Porterfield, all of Winterville, Paul and Vi Jones, Watkinsville, Dot Lovett, Jefferson; sister-in-law, Melba Jones, Nicholson; grandchildren, Jamie, Jason and Jessica.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 11, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Wiley Carney officiating. Burial was in Arnoldsville Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews, Jeff Jones, Steve Jones, Chris Jones, Matt Jordan, Shawn Loden and Steve Carter.

Edd Davis
Edd Davis, 83, of Jefferson, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at his residence.
He was born in Jackson County, the son of the late Claude B. and Novie Turpin Davis. He was retired from Jefferson Mills and was a veteran, having served in the United States Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Davis, Jefferson; sons, Edward Davis Jr. and Allan Davis, both of Athens; brother, John Davis, Hull; sisters, Hazel Smith, Roberta Wood and Claudia Chastain, all of Jefferson; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, June 12, at 10 a.m., at Jackson Memorial Gardens conducted by Scott Martin.
