Charleston R. Cross
Charleston "Charlie" Ruby Cross, 3 days old, infant
daughter of Cody and Kristie Sorrow Cross, Comer, died Wednesday,
January 5, 2000.
Cross was born Monday, January 3, in Clarke County.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 7, in the chapel of
Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Revs. Jim Carpenter
and Randy Coggins officiating. Burial was in Danielsville Memorial
Gardens.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include one sister, Calyn
Oakley Cross, Comer; grandparents, Glenn and Joan Cross and Rita
Sorrow, all of Danielsville, and Johnny Sorrow, Hull; and great-grandparents,
Walter and Ruby Cross and Bill and Bobbie McGilvery, all of Alabama,
Dell E. Dove, Comer, and Ida Weaver, Danielsville.
A fund for hospital and burial expenses has been set up for Infant
Cross at Merchants & Farmers Bank, Danielsville.

Bertie L. Bowen
Mrs. Bertie Lee Bond Bowen, 80, Comer, died Saturday, January
8, 2000, at the Comer Health Care Center.
Mrs. Bowen was born August 30, 1919, in Madison County. She was
a daughter of the late Charlie Dewey and Ophelia Randall Bond.
Mrs. Bowen was retired from Johnson and Johnson, formerly known
as Chicopee Manufacturing, and was a member of New Hope Congregational
Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Barrett Bowen,
and two brothers, Floyd Bond and Howard Bond.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 11, at New Hope Congregational
Holiness Church with the Rev. Dennis Kesler and Dr. Tom Howell
officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Bowen's
grandsons served as pallbearers.
Survivors include two daughters, Frances Kirk, Danielsville,
and Louise Cheek, Royston; three sons, James B. Bowen Sr., Colbert,
Jerry Bowen, Danielsville, and Larry Bowen, Royston; five brothers,
Andrew Bond, Buford Bond and Lee Bond, all of Royston, and Charlie
Bond Jr. and Clyde Bond, both of Carnesville; 14 grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren.

Kathryn H. Thompson
Mrs. Kathryn Hall Thompson, 65, of Colbert, died Tuesday, January
4, 2000.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of Irene
King Hall and the late Ezra Hall.
She was a retired technician with Southern Bell and was a member
of Colbert Baptist Church.
Graveside services were held Friday, January 7, in the Meadow
Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Don Fuller officiating.
Survivors include four daughters, Ann Blankenship, Fayetteville,
N.C., Vickie Turner, Watkinsville, Bobby Davis, Vidalia, and
Carol Leigh Hepler, Mableton; one son, James "Jimmy"
Mack Thompson, Marietta; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lucy H. Coile
Mrs. Lucy Horne Coile, 80, of Hull, died Thursday, January 6,
2000.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Coile was a daughter of the
late Ben and Blondine Scarbrough Horne.
She had lived in the Madison County area all of her life, was
a homemaker and was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Mrs. Coile was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Coile.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 8, in the chapel
of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev.
Elmer Butler officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Baptist Church
cemetery. Don Smith, Benjamin Smith, William Smith, Blayne Smith,
Donald Faust and Douglas Horne served as pallbearers.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley C. Smith, Hull, and
Eddie C. Gabriel, Comer; three sisters, Jennie Christian, Hull,
Caroldine Smith, Athens, and Jackie Roberts, Danielsville; two
brothers, James Horne, Helen, and Bobby Ray Horne, Greensboro,
N.C.; three grandchildren, Lucy C. Kidd and Don Smith, both of
Hull, and Amanda Faust, Crawford; and two great-grandchildren,
William and Jarrod Smith.

Lottie B. McElroy
Mrs. Lottie Belle Williams McElroy, 78, of Commerce, died Friday,
January 7, 2000.
Mrs. McElroy was a daughter of the late Dave Berry and Lula Ann
Thurmond Williams.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Rogers Baptist Church.
Mrs. McElroy had been married three times, first to the late
Buford Dorsey Hix, second to the late Walker Mitchell Clegg,
and third to the late Charles A. McElroy.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, Dorris Bennett Williams,
Thurmond David Williams, Young Monroe Williams, Bernice Williams,
Hoyt Williams and Ernest Williams, and one sister, Mattie Lee
Fitzpatrick.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 9, at Rogers Baptist
Church with the Rev. Carlton Petters and William Puckett officiating.
Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include three sons, David Hix, Jefferson, Clay F. McElroy,
Commerce, and Randy L. McElroy, Ila; three daughters, Wanda Horne,
Commerce, and Vickie Eubanks and Inya Russell, both of Comer;
one brother, J.D. Williams, Thomasville, N.C.; one sister, Flora
Nell Wilkes, Commerce; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Susan G. Hendrix
Mrs. Susan Gayle Hendrix, 49, of Hull, died Sunday, January 9,
2000.
A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Hendrix was a daughter of the
late Sue Venable Randolph.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 13,
in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East.
Survivors include her husband, Carlton Hendrix; one daughter,
Angel Hendrix Bennett, Athens; one son, Robert Shane Haley, Bogart;
and one grandson.

Roger L. Allen
Roger Lee Allen, 54, of Colbert, died Thursday, January 6, 2000.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 10, at Waggoner Grove
Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Thomas officiating.
Survivors include five sisters, Shirley Allen and Linda Butler,
both of Colbert, Maudie Johnson, Hull, and Martha Foote and Oneida
Morris, both of Athens; and two brothers, John Henry Allen and
Paul E. Allen, both of Colbert.

Grover C. Poole
Col. Grover Curtis Poole, 64, of Clovis, N.M., brother of William
C. Poole, Danielsville, died Friday, January 7, 2000.
A native of Greene County, Mr. Poole was a son of the late Curtis
and Henriella Hill Poole.
He was a retired fighter pilot with the U.S. Air Force, with
29 years of service. Mr. Poole served in Vietnam and had accumulated
over 6300 hours flight time in various military fighter aircraft.
He was a 1953 graduate of Greensboro High School and was a member
of the First Baptist Church of Greensboro.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 13,
at the First Baptist Church of Greensboro with the Rev. Wayne
Usry officiating. Burial will be in Greenview Cemetery, Greensboro.
Darrell Phelps, Lonnie Higdon, Ben Boswell, Billy Boswell, Charles
Williams, Carey Williams, Jimmy Blasingame and T.W. McKinley
will serve as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to his brother, include two daughters,
Linda Hobbs and Alisa McFarden, both of Clovis, N.M.; three grandchildren
and three step-grandchildren.

Gladys A. Horne
Mrs. Gladys Adams Horne, 74, of Belmont, N.C., died Sunday, January
9, 2000.
A native of Madison County, Mrs. Horne was a daughter of the
late Raymond and Lura Bell McClure Adams.
She was retired from Eagle Yarn Mills, Belmont, N.C., and was
a member of Stowe Memorial Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 11, at the Colonial
Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, Belmont, N.C., with the Rev.
Thomas Hogan officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Richard
Horne, Dusty Horne, Brian Horne, Brad Horne, Jack Horne and Justin
Horne served as pallbearers.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Horne; two sons, Kenneth
Horne, Kure Beach, N.C., and Gary Horne, Belmont, N.C.; two daughters,
Carol Crouse, Gastonia, N.C., and Sandra Clements, Mt. Holly,
N.C.; one brother, Donald Adams, Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters,
Emily Gilchrist and JoAnne Lowe, both of Mt. Holly, N.C.; 11
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Otis L. Robinson
Otis Lee Robinson, 64, of Athens, died Thursday, January 6, 2000.
Mr. Robinson was a native of Madison County. He worked as a custodian
at Cedar Shoals High School.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 10, at the First St.
Paul Baptist Church, Appalachee. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Sallie Robinson; daughter, Mattie
Robinson, Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Linda R. and Skip
Taylor, Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Ivan "Sugar"
and Glenda Robinson, Athens; sons, Jeff Robinson, Athens, and
Donnie Ellington, Bostwick; his mother, Bessie Robinson, Athens;
three sisters, Barbara Smith, Atlanta, Carolyn Robinson, Baxley,
and Marilyn Robinson, Appalachee; brother and sister-in-law,
Bart "Cokey" and Chris Robinson, Baxley; brothers,
Randolph Peterkin and L.C. Peoples, both of Madison, and Sonny
