Temple Baptist founder
MAYSVILLE - The Rev. Barney Griffin, 55, died Sunday, June 11,
2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Griffin was born August 26, 1944, in Banks County. He was
a son of Eva Redmon Griffin, Maysville, and the late Barnell
Griffin.
Mr. Griffin attended Fort Wayne Bible College and Toccoa Falls
Bible College. He was the founder and pastor of Temple Baptist
Church, Homer, until the early 70s, and pastored several other
churches in Jackson, Banks and Franklin counties. The Rev. Griffin
was a member of Maysville Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 13, at Grove Level Baptist
Church with the Revs. Jeff Appling, Gerald Mitton and Brian Stowe
officiating. Burial was in Sunrise Cemetery, Maysville.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Donna
Cox Griffin; two sons, Jeremy Griffin and Matthew Griffin, both
of Maysville; five daughters, Cynthia Bartow, Angela Mason, Rebecca
Plemmons and Teresa Yale, all of Ashville, N.C., and Elizabeth
Wilson, Pendergrass; three brothers, Billy Griffin and Bobby
Griffin, both of Athens, and Jerry Griffin, Oakwood; three sisters,
Wilma Abney, Kennesaw, Martha Cotton, Homer, and Joyce Griffin,
Smyrna; 10 grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. HUMPHRIES
Truck driver
COMMERCE - J.B. Humphries, 74, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at
Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Humphries was born October 21, 1925, a son of the late Allie
and Genevie Smith Humphries.
He had been employed as a truck driver.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, at New Bridge Baptist
Church with the Revs. Bill Manus and Verner London officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Flora Gerrell Humphries; daughter
and son-in-law, Joyce and Malcolm Turner Vest, Commerce; one
brother, Reeves Humphries, Demorest; three sisters, Vavanelle
Keenan and Kathryn London, both of Cleveland, and Everene Stover,
Gainesville; two granddaughters, Malinda and Jennifer Vest; and
a number of nieces and nephews.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. BOWEN
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church member
CORNELIA - Mrs. Arizona Pless Bowen, 103, died Monday, June 12,
2000, at a private nursing center following an extended illness.
Mrs. Bowen was born October 22, 1896, in Habersham County. She
was a daughter of the late Rev. A.L. and Arlevia Carter Pless.
Mrs. Bowen was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Bowen.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 14, at Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church with the Rev. Lloyd Free officiating. Burial was
in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bowen is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

MRS. SHORT
Teacher, counselor
BRUNSWICK - Mrs. Nell Gaddis Short, 67, formerly of Cornelia,
died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical
Center following an extended illness.
Born in Hall County, Mrs. Short was a daughter of the late Raymond
Howard Gaddis and Ada Fowler Gaddis.
She received her master's degree from the University of Georgia
and her undergraduate in education. Mrs. Short taught school
in the Banks County School System and worked as a guidance counselor
at Jane Macon Middle School in Brunswick from 1970 until her
retirement. She was a member of the Christian Renewal Church
in Brunswick.
Mrs. Short was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wesley
"Tommy" Short.
Funeral services were held Friday, June 9, at Christian Renewal
Church with the Rev. Bill Legion officiating. Graveside services
were held Saturday, June 10, in Level Grove Cemetery, Cornelia.
Survivors include one daughter, Lynne Henry, Brunswick; one sister,
Reba Gaddis Brewer, Atlanta; three grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Crisis Pregnancy Center
or to a children's Christian organization.
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, was in charge
of local arrangements.

MRS. MYERS
Retired retail clerk
GAINESVILLE - Mrs. Guynell Wilson Cheatham Myers, 75, died Sunday,
June 11, 2000, at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville.
Mrs. Myers was born January 23, 1925, in Banks County. She was
a daughter of the late John C. Wilson and Ella Mae McElreath.
Mrs. Myers was a retired retail clerk and was a member of Oconee
Baptist Church, Jefferson. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Elmer C. Myers, a son, Clarence Cheatham Jr., two brothers, John
C. Wilson and Woodrow Wilson, and two sisters, Lucy Smallwood
and Sarah Jackson.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 12, in the chapel of
Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Billy Fowler officiating.
Burial was in the Oconee Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy N. Eubanks, Gainesville;
grandchildren, George Eubanks Jr., Dahlonega, and Tracey, Chris
and Kevin Eubanks, all of Gainesville; granddaughter and grandson-in-law,
Julie and Greg Martin, Commerce; three great-grandchildren and
several nieces and nephews.

MR. COLLINS
Retired auditor
MAYSVILLE - Jimmy Hamilton Collins, 64, died Monday, June 12,
2000, at his residence.
Mr. Collins was born October 17, 1935, in Jackson County. He
was a son of Charles E. and Faye Tucker Collins, Commerce.
Mr. Collins was a retired auditor and a member of Madison Street
Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara
Anne Collins.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 14, at Madison Street
Baptist Church with the Rev. David Harbin officiating. Burial
was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Sandra
Carter Collins; two sons, Jay Hamilton Collins, Atlanta, and
Jimmy David Collins, Ila; one daughter, Robin Renee Scoggins,
Ila; two step-sons, Casey Evans, Maysville, and Edward Chuck
Evans, Gainesville; one sister, Charla Lowe, Commerce; a foster
brother, Gerald Mullins, Redding, Calif.; seven grandchildren
and seven great-grandchildren.

Service technician
CORNELIA - Roger Welton Hayes, 58, died Thursday, June 8, 2000,
at Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville.
Mr. Hayes was born May 1, 1942, in Stephens County. He was a
son of Woodrow and Hazel Westmoreland Hayes, Norcross.
Mr. Hayes was a service technician for the poultry industry and
a member of Baldwin Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 10, in the chapel of
McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the
Revs. Ed Aiken and Jentezen Franklin officiating. Burial was
in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Joyce
Dover Hayes; sons and daughters-in-law, Allan and Michelle Hayes,
Atlanta, David and Jill Hayes, Cornelia, and Brian and Christy
Hayes, Flowery Branch; sons, Greg Hayes, Atlanta, and Brad Hayes,
New York; two brothers, Philip Hayes and Mark Hayes, both of
Buford; and nine grandchildren.

MARIETTA - Mrs. Estella R. Morris, 73, died Wednesday, June 7,
2000.
Mrs. Morris was a former resident of Banks County. She was preceded
in death by her husband, Wilton Thomas Morris.
Mass of Christian burial was held Monday, June 12, at St. Thomas
the Apostle Catholic Church with the Rev. James Caffrey officiating.
Burial was in Banks County Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Morris is survived by one daughter, Ann Deaver, Marietta;
one sister, Kathleen Cooney, Philadelphia, Pa.; five grandchildren
and two great-grandchildren.

MRS. CARLAN
Banks County native
MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Josephine Redmon Carlan, 81, died Monday, June
12, 2000, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville.
Mrs. Carlan was born March 1, 1919, in Banks County. She was
a daughter of the late George Wiley and Leaner Baker Redmon.
Mrs. Carlan was a homemaker and a member of Grove Level Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walton Oliver
Carlan.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 14, in the chapel
of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Swayne
Carlan and Jeff Appling officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill
Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include three sons, James Carlan, Winterville, Jimmy
Carlan, Homer, and Larry Carlan, Maysville; three sisters, Ruby
Bales, Imogene Redmon and Viola Redmon, all of Maysville; 11
grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

MR. FAULKNER
U.S. Army veteran
COMMERCE - Amos Earl "Rusty" Faulkner, 70, died Thursday,
June 8, 2000, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Faulkner was born July 31, 1929, in Jackson County. He was
a son of the late Patrick S. and Essie Porter Faulkner.
Mr. Faulkner was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during the
Korean War, and was retired from Delta Airlines. He was a member
of Mt. Olive Baptist Church and a member of Hudson Lodge #294
F&AM.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 11, in the chapel of
Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Carlton Peters
officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Jestean Minish Faulkner; two sons,
Greg Faulkner, McDonough, and Patrick Faulkner, Monroe; one daughter,
Diane Smith, Athens; one brother, M.S. Faulkner, Snellville;
one sister, Florence Voyles, Commerce; and five grandchildren.
