MRS. ANDERSON

COMMERCE - Mrs. Johnnie McElroy Anderson, 85, died Thursday,
March 29, 2001, at Crystle Springs Nursing Home.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Anderson was born May 7, 1915,
a daughter of the late Albert Benton and Mary Elizabeth Carson
McElroy.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.
Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Currie
Anderson.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at
Beaverdam Baptist Church with the Revs. Marshall Smith and Chad
Payne officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include one step-son, Bill Anderson, St. Petersburg,
Fla.; one step-daughter, Ann Urbanski, Tampa, Fla.; one brother,
Felix McElroy, Athens; one sister, Roberta Sparks, Commerce;
and eight grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Beaverdam Baptist Church.

MR. PURCELL
World War II veteran
DEMOREST - Luther Purcell, 80, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001,
at Habersham County Medical Center following a short illness.
Mr. Purcell was born in Banks County on May 22, 1920. He was
a son of the late Dave and Gertrude Worley Purcell.
Mr. Purcell was formerly employed with Chicopee Manufacturing
Company and was retired owner and operator of Soque Cabinet Shop.
He had served on the Board of Directors of Habersham Electric
Membership Corporation for a number of years and was an Emeritus
Director. Mr. Purcell was a member of Cornelia Lodge #92, F &
AM and was life member of Grant Reeves Post #7720, Veterans of
Foreign Wars. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and
was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. Mr. Purcell was awarded
the Bronze Star for Meritorious Services rendered in Luzon and
was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Luzon. He
was also a member of Double Springs Baptist Church, where he
served as a deacon.
Mr. Purcell was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Smith
Purcell, and a brother, Haskel Purcell.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 31, at
Double Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Lamar Purcell, Wesley
Purcell and Luther Williams officiating. Burial was in Yonah
Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Honor Guard
from Fort McPherson.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen and Larry Segars,
Toccoa, and Drucilla and Johnny Justus, Demorest; sons and daughters-in-law,
Wesley and Judy Purcell, Cornelia, and Lamar and Betty Purcell,
Gainesville; sisters, Reba Staton, Dallas, and Lucille Nowling,
Clarkesville; brothers, Riley Purcell, Demorest, and Roy Purcell,
Cornelia; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

MR. WATKINS
World War II veteran
CORNELIA - John Watkins, 83, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at
Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Watkins was born in Banks County on October 4, 1917. He was
a son of the late William and Ethel Watson Watkins.
Mr. Watkins was a U.S. Army World War II veteran, having served
in New Guinea, Guadalcanal, North Solomons and the Philippines.
He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a bronze
star and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with four bronze
stars. Mr. Watkins was the retired owner and operator of Watkins
Trucking Co. and was a member of Lamar Christian Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Whitfield
Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Rev. Terry Rice
officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens with military
honors provided by the Honor Guard from Ft. McPherson.
Mr. Watkins is survived by his wife, Pauline Barrett Watkins,
Cornelia; one son, Gerald Watkins, Cornelia; two sisters, Lucille
Cook, Alto, and Janell Watkins, Baldwin; three brothers, Clyde
Watkins, Demorest, Fred Watkins, Mt. Airy, and Wilton Watkins,
Baldwin; and one grandson.
Memorials may be made to the Level Grove Baptist Church Building
Fund, P.O. Box 416, Cornelia, GA 30531.

MR. SCHUETZ
New York native
BALDWIN - Christopher W. Schuetz, 29, died Friday, March 30,
2001, at Emory University Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Schuetz was born August 31, 1971, in Smithtown, N.Y. He was
a son of Konrad and Meline Lohner Schuetz, Baldwin.
Mr. Schuetz was a member of the Association for Retarded Citizens
and was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church.
A funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 2, at St. Mark's
Catholic Church with Father Luis Zarama officiating.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one sister, Gisela
Johnson, Rindge, N.H.; one brother, Kurt Schuetz, Quincy, Mass.;
and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Association
for Retarded Citizens, c/o Jane McFerrin, 299 Ostrich Drive,
Cleveland, GA 30528.

MR. MINISH
Jackson County native
COMMERCE - Lenward L. Minish, 77, died Sunday, April 1, 2001,
at his residence.
Mr. Minish was born November 28, 1923, in Jackson County, a son
of the late Foster and Lottie Richey Minish.
He was retired from the auto business and was of the Baptist
denomination.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the
chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Swayne
Cochran officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Minish is survived by his wife, Margaret Lord Minish, Commerce;
two sons, Dennis Minish, Commerce, and Sam Thurmond, Maysville;
five daughters, Linda Hendrix and Cynthia Sorrow, both of Commerce,
Cathy Minish, Gainesville, Dianne Mooney, Huntland, Texas, and
Linda Kay Reed, Sumitt, Utah; one brother, Columbus O. Minish,
Charles City, Va.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

MRS. WHITSEL
Homemaker
HOMER - Mrs. Lera Whitsel, 95, died Friday, March 30, 2001, at
her residence.
Mrs. Whitsel was born January 23, 1906, in Georgia, a daughter
of the late John and Alice Roberts.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in Jackson
Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include two sons, Dewitt Whitsel, Comer, and Odell
Whitsel, Homer; two daughters, Hazel Hemrick, Demorest, and Magalyn
Vaughn, Homer; one sister, Bertha Tench, Walhalla, S.C.; seven
grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

MRS. CHILDERS
Liberty Baptist member
ALTO - Mrs. Rosa Nell Childers, 71, died Saturday, March 31,
2001, at Habersham County Medical Center following a sudden illness.
Mrs. Childers was born in Hall County on May 4, 1929. She was
a daughter of the late Jim and Christine Brookshire Gravitt.
Mrs. Childers was retired from Fieldale Corporation and was a
member of Liberty Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by
a daughter, Joyce Hooper.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at Whitfield
Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Revs. Sanford
Kimbrell and Leon Brown officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial
Gardens.
Mrs. Childers is survived by her husband, John H. Childers, Alto;
one daughter, Louise Thomas, Alto; two sisters, Pairlee Young,
Gainesville, and Annie Mae Parker, Homer; five grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.

MRS. CRANE
Banks County native
GAINESVILLE - Mrs. Jimmie Lou Garrison Crane, 76, died Sunday,
April 1, 2001, at New Horizon Nursing Home following an extended
illness.
Mrs. Crane was born in Banks County, but had lived in Hall County
for most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Nellie and
Tencie Sheridan Garrison.
Mrs. Crane retired from Georgia Chair Company and was a member
of Grove Level Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Ollie Crane.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the
chapel of Ward's Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Clifford
Allen officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery,
Lumpkin County.
Survivors include four sons, Marvin Crane, Gene Crane and Larry
Crane, all of Gainesville, and Lee Roy Crane, Jefferson; one
brother, George Alvin Garrison, Jackson County; seven grandchildren,
10 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

MRS. DODD
Seamstress
DEMOREST - Mrs. Oudia Armour Dodd, 57, died Friday, March 30,
2001, at her residence following a brief illness.
Born in Hall County on June 14, 1943, Mrs. Dodd was a daughter
of the late Albert and Rosie Lackey Armour.
She worked as a seamstress with Carwood Manufacturing and was
a member of Harvest Vision Worship Center. Mrs. Dodd was preceded
in death by a brother, Arnie Armour, and a sister, Susie Forrester.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 2, at Harvest
Vision Worship Center with the Rev. Frank Armour and Pastor Ryan
Smith officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Baptist Church
cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Tony Dodd, Mt. Airy; four brothers,
Erby Armour, Eastanollee, Ralph Armour, Athens, and Mitchell
Armour and Frank Armour, both of Gainesville; and two sisters,
Ellen Brown, Clayton, and Edna Jones, Alto.

MR. CRUNKLETON
U.S. Army veteran
COMMERCE - James M. Crunkleton, 82, died Saturday, March 31,
2001, at his residence.
Mr. Crunkleton was born September 7, 1918, in Rabun County. He
was a son of the late Joseph H. and Lilly Mae Wall Crunkleton.
Mr. Crunkleton was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served
during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He had been employed
as a salesperson and was of the Baptist denomination.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Whitlock
Chapel.
Mr. Crunkleton is survived by his wife, Eleanor Artemis Pappas
Crunkleton, Commerce; two sons, Robert J. Crunkleton, Orlando,
Fla., and Wayne Crunkleton, Silver Spring, Md.; one daughter,
Penelope Crunkleton, Silver Spring, Md.; one brother, J.H. Crunkleton,
Tiger; and one sister, Lauren Cabe, Tiger.

MR. MARTIN
World War II veteran
MACON - George Martin, a World War II veteran and native of Jackson
County, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at the Georgia War Veteran
Home in Milledgeville following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Martin was a son of the late Lee O. and Leila Tolbert Martin.
He served in the European Theater of World War II and was awarded
the Purple Heart Medal. Mr. Martin was a retiree of Robins Air
Force Base, Warner Robins.
Burial was in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Martin is survived by one daughter, DeJuan Neilson, Gray,
two grandsons, Cliff Holmes and T.J. Neilson, both of Gray; one
sister, Mrs. Hazel Spencer, Athens; and one brother, W.L. Martin,
Maysville.

ATHENS - Mrs. Irene Katie Boren, 82, died Saturday, March 31,
2001.
Mrs. Boren was born September 11, 1918, in Georgia. She was a
daughter of the late Mac C. and Bertha Louise Murphy Boren.
Mrs. Boren was a homemaker.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, in Gillsville
Cemetery with the Rev. Terry James officiating.
Mrs. Boren is survived by a brother, Robert Boren, Danielsville.

MR. CARLAN
World War II veteran
VALDOSTA - Ulysses Grant Carlan, 87, died Thursday, March 15,
2001.
Born in Banks County, Mr. Carlan was a son of the late Cashmir
Pulaski Carlan and Theresa Mae Brooks Carlan.
He was a graduate of the U.S. Army War College at Carlilse Barracks,
Penn., received his J.D. at Georgetown University and his B.S.
at the University of Georgia. A veteran of World War II, Mr.
Carlan retired from the U.S. Army as a Colonel.
He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Carlan.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 19, in the chapel of
Carson McLane Funeral Home, Valdosta, with the Rev. Robert Willis
officiating. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Carlan is survived by his wife, Dorothy Davison Carlan; one
son, Stephen James Carlan, Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Col.
Laura Elizabeth Carlan Battle, Valdosta; two sisters, Bertha
Thomas, Jefferson, and Kathleen Pruitt, Homer; and six grandchildren.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Ruth G. Elrod, 70, died Saturday, March 31, 2001,
at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Elrod was born in Georgia on March 5, 1931. She was a daughter
of the late Johnny Dalton and Lillian Dill Baker.
Mrs. Elrod was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Monday, April 2, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce. Burial was in Grey Hill
Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include five sons, Bamm Bamm Elrod and Dennis Elrod,
