BRASELTON - Jason Bachelor, 19, formerly of Buford, died Tuesday,
April 3, 2001.
Born in Gwinnett County, Mr. Bachelor was a son of James and
Rhonda Bachelor, Braselton.
He attended Jackson County Comprehensive High School and was
a welder.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, in the
chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, with the Rev. Thomas
Terry officiating. Burial was in Broadlawn Memorial Gardens,
Buford.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include three sisters,
Missy Bobo, Hartwell, Toni Bobo, Royston, and Amanda Hudson,
Norcross; two brothers, Bobby Bobo, Braselton, and Billy Ray
Bachelor, Arcade; grandparents, Billy Joe and Beverly Bachelor,
Buford, and Barbara J. Dokor, Hartwell; great-grandmother, Arlie
Foxworth, Hartwell; aunts, uncles and cousins.

MR. MARTIN
Retired carpenter
COMMERCE - Mack A. Martin, 82, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001,
at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Martin was born October 20, 1918.
He was a son of the late Ernest and Nolia Lord Martin.
Mr. Martin was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World
War II, and was a retired carpenter. He was of the Baptist denomination.
Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his wife, Lottrell Purcell
Martin.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the
chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs.
Bill Carpenter and Billy Shirley officiating. Burial was in the
Chandler Family Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include one sister, Rachel Martin, Commerce; three
nephews, Brian Martin, Gainesville, Curtis Martin, Monroe, and
Justin Martin, Commerce; and one niece, Jennifer Seagraves, Commerce.

MR. JORDAN
U.S. Army veteran
NICHOLSON - Otha L. Jordan, 87, died Thursday, April 5, 2001.
Born in Homer, Mr. Jordan was a son of the late James Pleasant
and Mary Lou Cheek Jordan.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World
War II, and had worked at a filling station. Mr. Jordan was of
the Baptist denomination.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in
Evergreen Memorial Park with the Rev. Hoyt Johnson officiating.
Survivors include one son, James Wallace Jordan, Athens; two
sisters, Burma Sue Smith, Danielsville, and Monti Ray Lu Allen,
Commerce; two brothers, Allen Jordan, Ila, and Hayde Jordan,
Orlando, Fla.; one grandchild, one great-grandchild and several
nieces and nephews.

MRS. TROWELL
Retired school teacher
COMMERCE - Mrs. Elizabeth Montgomery Trowell, 91, died Thursday,
April 5, 2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Born in Jackson County, Mrs. Trowell was born February 23, 1910,
a daughter of the late John Oliver and Ruby Alline Ritchie Montgomery.
She was a retired schoolteacher and was a member of the First
United Methodist Church of Commerce. Mrs. Trowell was also a
member of the Daughters of American Revolution and the United
Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Trowell.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at the
First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Warren
Huddleston and Mera Head officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill
Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Trowell is survived by a cousin, Dr. Jessie Julia Mize,
Athens; a niece, Carol Paolin, Pennsylvania; and a number of
other cousins.

World War II veteran
BALDWIN - William A. "Bill" Pierce, 78, died Saturday,
April 7, 2001, at Habersham County Medical Center.
Mr. Pierce was born in Jackson County on June 12, 1922. He was
a son of the late William Arthur and Mary Elizabeth Mize Pierce.
Mr. Pierce was a veteran of World War II, having served in U.S.
Army.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 9, in the
Dry Pond United Methodist Church cemetery with the Revs. Mera
Head and Warren Huddleston officiating.
Survivors include four sisters, Mary Frances Delamater, Beth
Pierce, Connie Wilson and Jo Wilson, all of Commerce.

COMMERCE - Cody Scott Sexton, 4 months, son of Clayton Randall
and Angela Mauldin Sexton, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Athens
Regional Medical Center.
Infant Sexton was born November 19, 2000, in DeKalb County, Ala.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in the
chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Brad
Wilson officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include one brother, Zachary
Smith, Commerce; maternal grandparents, Jimmy and Louise Mauldin,

MIAMI, FLA. - Mrs. Frances Marie Williamson Palmer, 85, died
Monday, March 26, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Palmer was born September 19, 1915, in Jackson County, a
daughter of the late Burke and Annie Kelley Williamson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, W.C. "Red"
Palmer.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in
the chapel of Palms Woodlawn Funeral Home, Naranja, Fla. Burial
was in Palms Woodlawn Cemetery, Homestead, Fla.
Mrs. Palmer is survived by two daughters, Shirley Gail Hill,
Homestead, Fla., and Chloe Louise Wilson, Gainesville, Fla.;
three sons, Grady B. Palmer, Pembroke Pines, Fla., James F. Palmer,
Miami, Fla., and William D. Palmer, California; two sisters,
Chloe W. Huff, Jefferson, and Virginia Hoffman, Savannah; 13
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Church member
HOMER - Mrs. Thelma Duncan Lewallen, 92, died Friday, April 6,
2001, at BJC Nursing Home, Commerce.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Lewallen was born January 25,
1909, a daughter of the late Alvin and Hattie Bray Duncan.
She was a homemaker and a member of Homer Baptist Church. Mrs.
Lewallen was preceded in death by her husband, Cliff Lewallen,
and a daughter, Doris Tucker.
Graveside services were held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in
Banks Memorial Gardens, Homer, with the Revs. Jim McClendon and
Jerry Stowe officiating.
Survivors include one son, Bobby Lewallen, Homer; one brother,
Hoyt Duncan, Commerce; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

MRS. EDWARDS
Jackson
County native
COMMERCE - Mrs. Margie Bonds Edwards died Friday, March 23, 2001,
at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Edwards was born May 21, 1931, in Commerce, a daughter of
the late John and Clara Bonds. Her youth, as well as her adult
years, were spent in the Commerce, Jackson County area.
Mrs. Edwards accepted Christ at an early age and joined Mt. Pleasant
CME Church. She later moved her membership to New Faith Methodist
Church. Mrs. Edwards was retired from Peerless Laundry.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 26, at New Faith Methodist
Church with the Rev. Frank Earls officiating, assisted by the
Revs. Ken Sims and Willie Pattman. Burial was in Johntown Cemetery,
Commerce.
Mrs. Edwards is survived by her husband, Sam Edwards, Commerce;
five children, Virginia Rollins (Clark), Samuel Bonds (Ruth)
and Wayman Bonds (Nancy), all of Commerce, Peggy Dowdy, Jefferson,
and Michael Maddox, Athens; two sisters, Louvenia Strickland
and Ruby Rucker, both of Commerce; two brothers, Roger Bonds
and Lonnie Bonds Sr., both of Commerce; 20 grandchildren and
30 great-grandchildren; a devoted family member and best friend,
Zeulla Bonds, as well as Mary Frances Reed, Commerce; special
friend, Sarah Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews and other
relatives and friends.

MR. MCCURDY
Entrepreneur
UNION CITY - Claude Johnson "Mac" McCurdy Jr., 87,
formerly of Chamblee and Danielsville, died Tuesday, April 10,
2001, at Christian City Convalescent Center of complications
from Alzheimer's Disease.
Mr. McCurdy was born January 26, 1914, in Banks County, the fourth
of seven children, to Blonnie Chambers McCurdy and Claude J.
McCurdy Sr.
He spent most of his working years in the paint manufacturing
industry. Mr. McCurdy was an entrepreneur who founded Maxi-Kote
Paint Company and Mercury Spray Equipment in Chamblee, where
he lived with his family for 30 years.
He was a devoted member of the Lions Club and served in various
positions on the board. Mr. McCurdy was a member of the First
United Methodist Church of Chamblee, and later Jones Chapel United
Methodist Church, Danielsville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Rosemary
Speir McCurdy, his oldest son, C.J. McCurdy III, a grandchild,
a brother, and a sister.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 12,
at at H.M. Patterson & Son Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, Atlanta.
Burial will be in North Atlanta Memorial Park.
Mr. McCurdy is survived by his wife, Lyla Bennett McCurdy, Union
City; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Glenn Jones, Norcross,
and Margaret and Ernest Saunders, Hoschton; son and daughter-in-law,
William and Anita McCurdy, Daytona Beach, Fla.; step-daughter
and son-in-law, Kim and Steven Ekstrom, Paris, Texas; sisters,
Monteen Winkleman, LeHigh Acres, Fla., and Blondine Andrews,
Rainesville, Ala.; brothers, William McCurdy, Braselton, and
George Wesley McCurdy, Royston; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren
and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Christian City
Convalescent Center in Union City, Ga., or to the Alzheimer's
Association.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday
at H.M. Patterson Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, located at 4550 Peachtree
Road.

COMMERCE - Waymon Cain, 68, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Athens
Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Cain was a son of Mattie Cain Lord, Commerce, and the late
George W. Cain. He was a retired logger.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Troy Herbert,
Donald Wilson and Mark Poston officiating. Burial was in Jackson
Memorial Park, Jefferson.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Cain is survived by his wife,
Louise E. Cain, of the home; one son, Ricky Cain, Commerce; five
daughters, Kathy Sosebee, Betty Denton, Linda Kitchens, and Pam
Weldon, all of Commerce, and Carolyn Wolfe, Cherokee, N.C.; one
step-son, Dennis Bonds, Homer; two step-daughters, Kathy Strickland

MADISON - Mrs. Betty Guinn, 65, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at
Newton General Hospital.
A native of Hall County, Mrs. Guinn was born December 3, 1935,
a daughter of the late John and Mary Norris Grindle.
She was a homemaker.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Diamond
Hill Baptist Church, Commerce, with the Revs. Roger Whitley and
Elmer Maddox officiating. Burial was in the Diamond Hill Baptist
Church cemetery.
Mrs. Guinn is survived by her husband, Roger Guinn, Madison;
five sons, Anthony Grindle, Gary Grindle, Stephen Grindle, Danny
Grindle and Mitchell Grindle, all of Madison; one daughter, Sherry
Rider, Gillsville; one brother, Randall Grindle, Gainesville;
two sisters, Dorothy Nalley, Gainesville, and Shirley Nalley,
Maysville; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Automotive mechanic
HOMER - Gregory Bathurst, 54, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at
Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Bathurst was born March 9, 1947, in Olian, N.Y. He was a
son of the late Howard and Anna Bathurst.
Mr. Bathurst was an automotive mechanic and was a member of Shady
Grove Baptist Church. He was also a member of the Blood Warriors
Motorcycle Church.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Vaughn Howington
officiating. Burial was in the Silver Shoals Baptist Church cemetery,
Homer.
Mr. Bathurst is survived by his wife, Carolyn Bathurst, Homer;
one daughter, Rebecca Chapman, Toccoa; two brothers, Ronnie Zelle,
Phoenix, Ariz., and Bill Bathurst, Olian, N.Y.; one sister, Letha

MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Stella Lewis, 88, died Friday, April 6, 2001,
at Scenic View Health Care Center.
Mrs. Lewis was born April 13, 1912, in Georgia, a daughter of
the late Oliver D. and Lula Hooper Wilbanks.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Grove Level Baptist Church.
Mrs. Lewis was preceded in death by her husband, Sharp Lewis,
and a son, Regis Lewis.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Jerry Mize
officiating. Burial was in the Grove Level Baptist Church cemetery.

MR. OWENSBY
World War II veteran
LILBURN - Roscoe Herbert Owensby, 78, died Wednesday, April 4,
2001, at his residence.
Mr. Owensby was born September 15, 1922, in Georgia, a son of
the late Roscoe Herbert and Hettie Bell Barrett Owensby.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army,
and had worked as a mechanic with Northwest Airlines. Mr. Owensby
was a member of Lilburn First Baptist Church, Lilburn.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 6, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb
officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Owensby is survived by his wife, Geraldine Owensby, Lilburn;
one son, Steven Owensby, Fayetteville; two daughters, Cathy Lord,
Maysville, and Sandra Scoggins, Dacula; one brother, Bobby J.
Owensby, Lincolnton; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

HULL - Luther E. Wood, 81, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001.
Mr. Wood was a son of the late Hinton and Lenora Wilson Wood
and the husband of the late Vera Youngblood Wood.
He was a retired carpenter.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Michael
Newman Sr. officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Park,
Jefferson. Tommy Wood, Micha Quarles, Scot Carson, T.J. Clark,
Willie Epps and Church Toney served as pallbearers.
Survivors include three sons, Luther E. Wood Jr., Neese, Stanley
Wood, Nicholson, and Thomas Wood, Ila; five daughters, Marie
Carson, Commerce, Dorothy Harper, Ocala, Fla., Mary Helen Quarles,
Watkinsville, Patricia Wood, Hull, and Shelia Herring, Comer;
one sister, Ethel Epps, Athens; 32 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren
and two great-great-grandchildren.
