MR. AYERS
Poultry farmer
ALTO - Levi Ayers, 90, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at BJC Medical
Center, Commerce, following an extended illness.
Mr. Ayers was born May 15, 1911, in Banks County, a son of the
late Jim and Mary Ayers Ayers.
He was a poultry farmer and was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist
Church, where he served as a deacon.
Mr. Ayers was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Sims Ayers,
and four sons, Alvin, David, Henry and Donald Ayers.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Mt.
Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Ralph O. Smith officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Claudine Lewallen, Lula, and
Leola Edwards, Commerce; four sons, Frank Ayers and Coy Ayers,
both of Lula, J.T. Ayers, Flowery Branch, and Doug Ayers, Alto;
12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, was in
charge of arrangements.

MRS. GARRETT
Cornelia C.H.C. member
ALTO - Mrs. Glenda L. Garrett, 55, died Saturday, June 30, 2001.
A native of Towns County, Mrs. Garrett was a daughter of the
late Thomas B. and Grace Lee Beck Garrett.
She was a former employee of Carwood Manufacturing and Scovill
Manufacturing, and was also employed with Garrett's Trucking
Company. Mrs. Garrett was a member of Cornelia Congregational
Holiness Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2, in the chapel
of Whitfield Funeral Home, South, Baldwin, with the Revs. Ronald
Mote, James Kennedy and Sanford Kimbrell officiating. Burial
was in Level Grove Cemetery.
Mrs. Garrett is survived by her husband, Ernest Garrett; daughter,
Cindy Lee Kitchens, Baldwin; sisters, Virginia Ross, Baldwin,
and Barbara Adams, Cleveland, and twin sister, Brenda Foster,
Cleveland; brother, James Garrett, Cornelia; half-brothers, Lee
Garrett, Thomas Garrett and Junior Garrett, all of Cornelia,
Ben Garrett, Cleveland, and Tony Garrett, Nicholson; and one
grandchild.

MRS. GORDON
Nails Creek Baptist
Church member
COMMERCE - Mrs. Sarah Gordon, 80, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001,
at BJC Nursing Home.
A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Gordon was born January 28,
1921, a daughter of the late Groover Carlan and Elizabeth Ayers
Gordon.
She retired from Westinghouse, where she had worked as an assembly
line technician, and was a member of Nails Creek Baptist Church,
Commerce. Mrs. Gordon was preceded in death by her husband, George
M. Gordon, and a son, Wayne Gordon.
Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 29, in the
chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Swayne
Carlan, Ben Johnson and James Duncan officiating. Burial was
in the Webbs Creek Baptist Church cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry Gordon, Lula, and Wayne Gordon;
two daughters, Carol Lott, Commerce, and Elaine Yoder, Toccoa;
two sisters, Jean Gordon, McDonough, and Ossie M. O'Kelley, Carnesville;
five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MR. BENTON
Banker, WWII veteran
COMMERCE - Thomas Frazer Benton, 80, died Saturday, June 30,
2001.
Mr. Benton was a farmer and president of Commerce Milling Company
for many years. In 1956, he became affiliated with Commerce Building
and Loan, and in 1972 became president and CEO. After a merger
with Athens First Bank and Trust, Mr. Benton served as vice president,
branch manager and served on the board of directors until his
retirement in 1983.
He was a graduate of Martin Institute, attended Emory at Oxford
and received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University
of Georgia. Mr. Benton was a World War II veteran, where he served
in the 517 Regimental Combat team; European Theatre. He was a
member of the Commerce Kiwanis Club, the BJC Hospital Authority,
the Sons of Confederate Veterans and a longtime member of the
First United Methodist Church Administrative Board. Mr. Benton
was a former member of the Hudson Lodge #294 F&AM, the Tumbling
Waters Society, served as former chairman of the Commerce Board
of Education and was a 30-year member of the Jackson County Planning
and Development Commission.
Mr. Benton was the son of the late T.T. and Sallie Kate Frazer
Benton. He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Benton
Shi.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2, at the
First United Methodist Church of Commerce with the Revs. Warren
Huddleston, Dan Maxey and Bob Ramsey officiating. Burial was
in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Benton is survived by his wife, Matilda Housch Benton, Commerce;
son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Karen Benton, Jefferson; daughters
and sons-in-law, Kathleen Benton and Jimmy T. Hooper, Maysville,
and Matilda Benton and Robert Wangerien, Turlock, Calif.; daughter,
Elizabeth Benton, Commerce; grandchildren, Leigh Ann Benton Weaver,
Dalton, Thomas H. Benton Jr., Jefferson, Frances Hooper Whitlock,
Buford, Wyatt Benton Hooper, Maysville, and John Terrell, Turlock,
Calif.; great-grandson, Samuel Thomas Weaver, Dalton; niece,
Katherine Shi Parsons, Phoenix, Ariz.; and sister-in-law, Marion
Housch Hutcheson, Rossville.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of
Commerce or to the National Brain Tumor Foundation.

SMITH
BCES student
COMMERCE - Miss Heather Elizabeth Smith, 8, died Thursday, June
28, 2001, at Scottish Rite Children's Hospital.
Miss Smith was born October 7, 1992, a daughter of Phillip Allen
and Helen Smith, Commerce.
She was a second grade student at Banks County Elementary School
and was a member of Cave Springs Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at Cave
Springs Baptist Church with Pastor Chad Rising and Pastor Terry
Smith officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by four sisters,
Kimberly Hebert, Melisa Hebert, Jessica Smith and Michelle Smith,
all of Commerce; grandmother, Gloria Bourgeois, Alto; and grandfather,
Mel Vlasic, Atlanta.

MR. PARKER
Jackson County native
JEFFERSON - Stephen Michael Parker, 51, died Friday, June 29,
2001, at his residence.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Parker was born October 31, 1949.
He was a son of Marion Elizabeth Wilson Holland and the step-son
of Buck Holland, Hull.
Mr. Parker was a lumber yard worker.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 1, in the chapel
of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Charles
Elrod and Vaughn Howington officiating. Burial was in Jackson
Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to his mother and step-father, include
his wife, Rita Faye Denton Parker, Jefferson; one son, Michael
Jones, Commerce; three daughters, Melissa Denton, Hoschton, Brandie
Parker, Commerce, and Ginnie Ruark, Jefferson; one sister, Leta
Ann Privette, Charlotte, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

MRS. KOLLEN
Fulton County native
WOODSTOCK - Mrs. Martha Anglin Kollen, 65, died Monday, July
2, 2001.
Mrs. Kollen was born May 2, 1936, in Fulton County, a daughter
of the late Clyde and Susie Lord Anglin.
She was self-employed in cleaning services and was of the Baptist
denomination.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 5, in
the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev.
Bill Boggess officiating. Burial will be in Howington Cemetery,
Nicholson.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Boggess, Paris, France,
and Betty Scearce, Kennesaw; one brother, Jimmy Anglin, Maysville;
five sisters, Freada Baxter and Patricia Holt, both of Maysville,
Nancy Roberts, Winterville, Mary Wade, Norcross, and Alice Whitener,
Danielsville; and six grandchildren.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday
at the funeral home.
