lead off 2001 fall season
JACKSON County's Volley Cats will have the honor of being the
first area prep sports team to compete during the 2001 fall season.
The Cats are scheduled to travel to Lakeview Academy Friday for
a jamboree.
The team will see action in four matches, beginning at 1 p.m.
The Volley Cats will visit West Hall Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., and
will play against the host Lady Spartans and Forsyth Central.
Both the varsity and JV teams will be in action.
PANTHER FOOTBALL JAMBOREE AT WHITE COUNTY
The Panther football team will drive up Highway 129 to Cleveland
Friday for a 6:30 p.m. jamboree with the White County Warriors.
White County, under second-year head coach Brent Brookshire,
features plenty of speed. In Brookshire's first year at the White
County helm, the Warriors finished 2-7 overall and 2-6 in Region
8-AA.
"We're really looking forward to it," Panther head
coach Greg Lowe said this week. "We're ready to get some
experience against somebody else."
According to Georgia High School Association rules, the jamboree
will be a 24-minute event, probably divided into two 12-minute
halves, though Lowe indicated earlier this week that the details
of the event would be finalized over the next few days.
The Panthers will go on their fall retreat next weekend, before
visiting Jefferson August 24 for both teams' second jamboree
of the season.
Jefferson will host Apalachee August 17.
PANTHER SOFTBALL
Jackson County's slow-pitch softball team will open its season
Tuesday. Both the varsity and JV teams will visit Oconee County,
beginning at 5 p.m.
The Panther fast-pitch team will play the first-ever varsity
fast-pitch game in Jackson County Wednesday at 5 p.m., when they
host Clarke Central.
Jefferson Booster Club to hold annual golf tournament
THE EIGHTH annual Jefferson Dragon Booster Club golf tournament
will be held August 25 at Eagle Greens at Sandy Creek Golf Course.
Registration will begin at 7 a.m., with the shotgun start an
hour later. There will be 44 teams consisting of three players
each.
The entry fee is $400 per team, which includes all three golfers,
hole sponsorship sign and the lunch and awards after the event.
There will be a $2,000 purse awarded to the top three teams in
the gross and net score competitions, and awards will also be
presented for closest to the pin and longest drive. Door prizes
are also planned.
Only two team openings remain, and $100 hole sponsorships are

BC Recreation
Department is registering for fall activities this month
The Banks County Recreation Department
is begining registration for tackle and flag football, cheerleading
and soccer this month.
Registration for soccer, flag football and tackle football will
be held at the Banks County Primary School. The dates for regestering
are August 16 from 5 p. m. to 7 p. m., August 18 from 10 a. m.
to noon and August 20 from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m.
Tackle football fees are $35 and soccer and flag football are
$30.
Tackle football equipment will be distributed August 21. For
11 and 12 year old players it wil be distributed from 6 p. m.
to 7 p. m. and for 9 and 10 year old players the equipment will
be given out between 7 and 8 p. m.
Cheerleading registration will be held on Tuesday August 21 from
6 p. m. to 8 p. m. at the Banks County Primary School Gym. The
fee will be $55 if a uniform is needed or $20 if a uniform is
not needed.

Tiger
Sharks Place In State Tournament
The Commerce Tiger Sharks finished their season by competing
against the 12 teams that form the North Georgia Swim League.
The competition was for team points and though most of the Tiger
Sharks swim year around the meet was the last of the summer season.
Haiden Nunn finished seventh in the short freestyle event. Gabrielle
Joransen finished eighth in the short freestyle.
Adrianne Joransen and Deanna Brown both finished eighth in the
breast stroke in their age groups. Mallory Ridling garnered a
seventh-place finish in her breast stroke event.
Kristina McFadden placed in four events. She was fourth in the
short freestyle and the breast stroke. McFadden had second- place
finishes in the I.M. and the butterfly stroke.
Josh Totherow also placed in four events. Totherow placed fourth
in the long freestyle, the short freestyle, and the backstroke.
Totherow was fifth in the breast stroke.
Nick Moulton had two first-place finishes for the Tiger Sharks.
Moulton won both the back stroke and the butterfly. In the short
freestyle Moulton was second and in the breast stroke he was
the fourth finisher.
The following swimmers swam in Saturday's meet for the Tiger
Sharks: Michelle Thompson, Kaleigh Coleman, Kayla Wade, Katie
McEver, Sarah Ridling, Beth Pritchett, Angela Martin, Laura Beth
Baker, Jake McEver, and Alex Martin.
STATE MEET
Three Tiger Sharks competed in the state tournament in Moultrie
July 28 and 29.
Nick Moulton competed in the backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle.
Moulton won both events in the 18-and-under group.
Josh Totherow earned a fourth-place finish in the long free-style.
Totherow competed in the 14-and-under division.
Josh Swistak finished fifth in the long freestyle. Swistak competed
in the 8-and-under division.
the three swimmers competed against other youth that had qualified
from the seven districts in Georgia.
Softball
Raiders to hit the diamond Thursday in leadoff tourney
Madison County's softball team will look to spark the 2001 season
by kicking things off in familiar surroundings.
The squad is set to host the Madison County Softball Leadoff
Classic at the recreation department Aug. 15-18.
The Raiders, coming off a 26-11 campaign and a fourth-place finish
in the state a year ago, are scheduled to play Thursday, taking
on Elbert County at 4:30 p.m. and then Monroe Area at 8 p.m.
in the first round of "pool" play.
At the end of the opening round, the top four teams from each
of the four pools will advance to the gold medal pool, second-place
teams will go to the silver medal pool and third-place teams
to the bronze.
The medal rounds will be held Friday and Saturday.
