MRS. PAYNE
Leatherwood Baptist Church member
BALDWIN - Mrs. Lydia Payne, 95, died Friday, August 10, 2001,
at a private nursing home following an extended illness.
Born on March 9, 1906, in Franklin County, Mrs. Payne was a daughter
of the late Thomas and Blanche Gunn Savage.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Leatherwood Baptist Church.
Private family funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August
12, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the
Rev. Jim Olds officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Payne, Mt. Airy; one sister,
Tommie Aldred, Mobile, Ala.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren
and one great-great-grandchild.

MRS. PRUITT
Homemaker
CARNESVILLE - Mrs. Dorothy Brady Pruitt, 62, of the Nails Creek
Community, died Tuesday, August 7, 2001, following an extended
illness.
Mrs. Pruitt was born October 29, 1938, in Banks County. She was
a daughter of the late Arvil and Weeze Farmer Brady.
Mrs. Pruitt was a homemaker and was a member of Nails Creek Baptist
Church. She was preceded in death by a step-son, Johnny Pruitt,
and a brother, Marvin Brady.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 9, at Nails
Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Burrell and Paul Robertson
officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Pruitt is survived by her husband, Millard Pruitt, Carnesville;
sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and J.L. Davis, Demorest;
and brothers and sisters-in-law, Buddy and Montez Brady, Baldwin,
and Leroy and Nell Brady, Cornelia.
Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, was in charge
of arrangements.

MRS. WRIGHT
Habersham County native
CLEVELAND - Mrs. Rebecca Leigh Barden Wright, 52, died Tuesday,
August 7, 2001.
Mrs. Wright was born in Habersham County on July 28, 1949. She
was a daughter of Frank Lee Barden, Cornelia, and the late Ola
Mae Ivie Barden.
She was employed by Fieldale Corporation and was of the Baptist
denomination. Mrs. Wright was preceded in death by a sister,
Jeanne Barden.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 10, in the
chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia,
with the Rev. Billy Harris officiating.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include one daughter, Maieyiana
Leigh Wright, Pennsylvania; one brother, Edward Lee Barden, Alto;
and two sisters, Tia Ann Cornelius, Doylestown, Ohio, and Emily
Cornelius, Baldwin.
Memorials may be made to the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, 3300
N.E. Expressway, Building 9, Atlanta, GA 30341.

MR. GRAVITT
Poultry farmer
GAINESVILLE - Royce Clay Gravitt, 73, died Monday, August 13,
2001, at Gateway Health and Rehabilitation Center, Cleveland,
following an extended illness.
A native of Hall County, Mr. Gravitt was a son of the late R.P.
and Rosa Overby Gravitt.
He was a graduate of Lyman Hall School, was a poultry farmer
and was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, at
Mt. Vernon Baptist Church with the Revs. Fulton Boswell and Dean
Bryant officiating. Burial was in Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville.
Mr. Gravitt is survived by his wife, Mrs. Johnnie Gravitt, Gainesville;
daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Bobby Gabrels, Baldwin;
daughter, Denise Pardue, Clermont; sisters, Eunice Cantrell and
Mildred Vandiver, both of Gainesville; brothers, Boyd Gravitt,
Loyd Gravitt and Charles Gravitt, all of Gainesville; granddaughters,
Tammy Craven, Demorest, and Lisa Nichols, Gainesville; grandson,
Kevin Pardue, Dahlonega; great-grandchildren, Hailen and Makayla
Nichols, Clay Pardue and Jessica and Cassidy Craven; and a number
of other relatives.

MRS. WILSON
Southern Railway retiree
DECATUR - Mrs. Merle Coker Wilson, 82, died Monday, August 6,
2001.
A native of Banks County, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late
Arthur and Missouri Fowler Coker.
She was retired from Southern Railway, with 39 years of service,
and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Conyers.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 9, in
Eastview Cemetery, Conyers, with Chaplain Dennis Yarbrough officiating.
Mrs. Wilson is survived by her husband, Jack C. Wilson Sr., Decatur;
nieces, Pamela Robinson and Angela Papalia, both of Henry County,
and Becky Hall, Florida; nephews, Joe D. Coker, Forest Park,
and James C. Coker, Roswell; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
Horis A. Ward Inc., Old Town Chapel, Conyers, was in charge of
arrangements.

COMMERCE - Harold Thomas Gotts, 37, died Saturday, August 11,
2001.
Mr. Gotts was born in California. He was self-employed and was
a member of the Banks County Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Gotts
was of the Baptist denomination.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 15, in
the chapel of Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, with the Rev.
Fredrick Henry Sunley officiating.
Mr. Gotts is survived by his father, Terrance Gotts; his mother
and step-father, Shirley Rutherford Sunley and Charles Sunley;
two sisters, Alice Colquitt, Comer, and Shelly Cooper, Forsyth;
one brother, Carl F. Gotts, Hartwell; and two step-brothers,
Charles G. Sunley and the Rev. Fredrick Henry Sunley, both of
Banks County.

Mother of five
COMMERCE - Mrs. Carolyn L. Hardy, 64, died Sunday, August 12,
2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Hardy was born December 10, 1936, a daughter of the late
Hope and Fannie Jones Lord.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, at
Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Hardy officiating.
Burial was in the Nicholson Cemetery.
Mrs. Hardy is survived by her husband, Leroy Hardy, Commerce;
two sons, Mike Hardy, Danielsville, and Marlon Hardy, Jefferson;
three daughters, Sandra Allen, Commerce, Lynn Davis, Crawford,
and Joy Hamby, Nicholson; two brothers, David Lord, Danielsville,
and Roy Lord, Ila; nine grandchildren, Scott, Brandi, Coe, Marla,
Matt, Amanda, Dillon, Karlee and Jessie; and one great-grandchild,
Ben.

MR. STOWE
Commerce native
ASTOR, FLA. - James H. Stowe, 45, died Sunday, August 5, 2001,
in Tavares, Fla.
Born in Commerce, Mr. Stowe was a son of Curtis and Flora Stowe,
Commerce.
He was a former resident of Daytona Beach, Fla., where he was
owner of Frank 'N Steins Pub. Mr. Stowe was also owner and operator
of a residential construction company and was a member of the
Masonic Lodge #294 F.&A.M., Commerce.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 9, in
the chapel of Beyers Funeral Home with the Rev. Pete Menendez
officiating. Burial was in Astor-Astor Park Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Mary
S. Stowe, Astor, Fla.; one son, Nickolas Stowe, Colorado Springs,
Colo.; two daughters, Kellie Stowe, Norcross, and Greta Hill,
Buford; and one sister, Cindy Brookshire, Commerce.
Beyers Funeral Home in Umatilla was in charge of arrangements.

DEMOREST - Mrs. Helen Shirley Popham, 80, died Wednesday, August
1, 2001, at a private nursing home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Popham was born in Rabun County on October 9, 1920, a daughter
of the late Milford and Loma Taylor Shirley.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Faith Tabernacle Baptist
Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m Friday, August 3, at Whitfield
Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Tom Mewborn
and Conny Shirley officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Popham is survived by her husband, John M. Popham Sr., Demorest;
one daughter, Shirley P. Smith, Demorest; two sons, John M. Popham
Jr. and Roger H. Popham, both of Demorest; one sister, Ann Darnell,
Clarkesville; one brother, Conny H. Shirley, Clarkesville; seven
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

CORNELIA - William R. Lee Jr., 64, died Monday, August 13, 2001,
at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended illness.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Geraldine Griffin Allen, 84, died Wednesday,
August 8, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Allen was born on August 18, 1916, in Banks County. She
was a daughter of the late Scott and Mamie Wood Griffin and the
widow of Bob Allen. Mrs. Allen was a retired textile employee
of Harmony Grove Mills and was a member of Homer Presbyterian
Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Allen and Dianne
Matthews, both of Commerce; Sherbie Harris, of Jefferson; three
sons, Truman Allen, Doug Allen and William Allen, all of Commerce;
10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held from the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home,
Commerce, on Friday, August 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. with the Rev.
Curtis Green officiating. Interment followed in the Homer Presbyterian
Church Cemetery in Homer.
Pallbearers were Tim Pritchett, Adam Matthews, Scot Allen, Coe
Allen, Brian Hoover, Rusty Cheek, Tracey Talley and Fran Martinez.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
