OTTO, N.C. - William Joseph Cook, 87, died Wednesday, September
19, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home.
Mr. Cook was born August 14, 1914, in Spartanburg County, S.C.,
a son of the late William Price and Elsie Leigh Blackwell Cook.
He was a retired real estate salesman.
Graveside services were held Friday, September 21, in Sunrise
Cemetery, Maysville, with the Rev. Warren Huddleston officiating.
Mr. Cook is surived by his wife, Milda Priscila Tennant Cook,
Otto, N.C.; one son, Jim Cook, Las Vegas, Nev.; one daughter,
Betty Wilkerson, Atlanta; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

North Carolina native
CEDAR BLUFF, ALA. - Mrs. Emma Green, 88, died Sunday, September
23, 2001, at Gadsden Regional Medical Center, Gadsden, Ala.
A native of Macon County, N.C., Mrs. Green was the daughter of
the late Wilbert Cowart and Lilly Perry Cowart.
She was retired from Harmony Grove Mill. In addition to her parents,
Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Green.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 27,
in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry
Webb officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens,
Commerce.
Survivors include one son, Charlie Farmer, Cedar Bluff, Ala.;
one daughter, Audrey Jones, Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother,
Mel Cowart, Hendersonville, N.C.; six grandchildren; and several
great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Thursday

World War II veteran
STATHAM - Collier Pierce Roberds, 76, died Sunday, September
23, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
He was the son of the late Vernon and Zula Junior Roberds. He
was a retired salesman from Greeson Mobile Homes and served in
the Marines during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Wall Roberds, Winder; one son,
Michael A. Roberds, Loganville; one daughter, Colleen Curott,
Winder; one half-brother, Jerry Garrett, Atlanta; five grandchildren;
and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 25, 2001, at Smith
Memory Chapel with the Rev. Jennifer Horton officiating. Burial
was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.

WINDER - Mrs. Annie Mae Williamson, 92, died Monday, September
24, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Williamson was the daughter of the late Thomas Russell and
Maude Cronic Wright and wife of the late B.R. Williamson. She
was a housewife and a member of Eastside Baptist Church. She
was preceded in death by eight grandchildren.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Winford and Jean
Williamson; daughters and sons-in-law, Eloise and Bill Franklin,
Reba and Jack Segars and Helen and Bobby Kimbrell; 16 grandchildren;
and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 26, 2001, at
Eastside Baptist Church with Dr. Jack Segars, the Rev. Kenneth
Dalton, the Rev. William Atha and the Rev. A.C. Davis officiating.

COMMERCE - Mrs. Laura A. Banks, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001,
at BJC Nursing Home.
A native of Georgia, she was born Dec. 15, 1911, to the late
Susan Elrod Ray and Allie Ray. She was a seamstress with Blue
Bell Manufacturing and attended Ridgeway Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be held September 27 at the chapel of Ivie
Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Henry Webb officiating.
Burial will be in the Toccoa City Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Don Banks, Martin; one daughter, Louise

HULL - Garnett Carnell "DD" Williams, 64, died Monday,
September 24, 2001, at his residence.
Mr. Williams was born December 9, 1936, in Jackson County. He
was a son of the late Martin and Esther Howington Williams.
Mr. Williams had been employed as a building supervisor with
the University of Georgia and was a member of Rogers Baptist
Church.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 26,
at Rogers Baptist Church with the Rev. Carlton Peters officiating.
Burial was in Howington Cemetery, Nicholson.

COMMERCE - Ms. Phyllis Mae Veal, 45, died Monday, September 24,
2001, following injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

She was a sales clerk and was a member of Madison Street Baptist
Church.

Vassie Ree Seabolt Shore, 82, of Commerce, died Tuesday, Sept.
25, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Mrs. Shore was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Banks County, a daughter
of the late William A.J. and Mattie Adel Bond Seabolt.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Blacks Creek Baptist
Church. Mrs. Shore was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence
Shore.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, in
the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs.
Bill Carpenter and Lee Hunter officiating. Burial will be in

Walter R. Looney
Walter R. Looney, 83, of Mt. Airy, died Wednesday, Sept. 19,
2001, at Habersham County Medical Center following an extended
illness.
A native of Banks County, he was born May 20, 1918, the son of
the late Charlie and Lizzie Durham Looney. He was a self-employed
businessman. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving
in World War II. He served in the second armored division having
fought in North Africa, Belgium, England, France and Germany.
He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was a lifetime
member of the VFW Post #7720 and a member of Nails Creek Baptist
Church.
Survivors include one step-daughter, Linda Brown, Covington;
one son and daughter-in-law, Walter and Brenda Looney Jr., Mt.
Airy; one step-son, Jerry Vanhorn, Augusta; one brother-in-law,
Homer McDonald, Baldwin; one sister and brother-in-law, Gwendolyn
and Paul Felts, Toccoa; one sister, Mildred Corley, Conyers;
two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Friday, September 26, at the chapel of McGahee-Griffin-Stewart
Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Scroggins and the Rev. Ken

Howard H. Echols
Howard H. Echols, 63, of Alto, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001,
at his daughter's residence following an extended illness.
Born on May 11, 1938, in Banks County, he was the son of the
late Henry Harrison and Eunice Eloise Kimsey Echols and was preceded
in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Echols. He was formerly
employed with Habersham Hardware, Ken-Bar Manufacturing and Kangaroo
Stores. Mr. Echols was a United States Army veteran serving in
the Vietnam Conflict and the Army Reserves from 1960 to 1981.
He was a member of the AARP and Enon Baptist Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Margaret Mason Echols, Alto; father-in-law,
Sherman Mason, Alto; one daughter and son-in-law, Maria Echols
Wilson and Edward Wilson, Baldwin; three sisters, Jane Murphy,
Alto, Dorothy Merle Turner, Lula, and Martha Kinsey, Mt. Airy;
two brothers, Thomas H. Echols and Wendell Echols, both of Alto;
and one granddaughter, Wendi Danielle Wilson, Baldwin.

World War II veteran
BETHLEHEM - Oscar Lee Cain, 82, died Sunday, September 23, 2001.
A native of Gwinnett County, he served in the United States Army
during World War II. He received an Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon
and a World War II Victory Ribbon. He was the son of the late
Bowman and Mary Grizzle Cain. He was preceded in death by a daughter,
Mary Faulkner.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Lillie Bell Sorrells
Cain, Bethlehem; daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Buddy McDaniel,
Bethlehem; two sisters, Lizzie Hamilton, Bethlehem, and Edna
Mauldin, Hoschton; and three grandchildren, Reggie McDaniel,
Chris Faulkner and Greg Faulkner.

Joyce Carlene Grant Dunson, 94, died Tuesday, September 18, 2001,
at Athens Heritage Home.
A native of DeKalb County, Mrs. Dunson was the daughter of the
late James Carl and Mytrice Metcalf Grant.
She was a retired teacher from Wilson Jr. High School and was
a member of Commerce Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Dunson was the
wife of the late Henry H. Dunson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 20,
at Commerce Presbyterian Church with Dr. Tom Lewis and the Rev.

Whitlock.

BRASELTON-Raymond Bert Harrison, 84, died Sunday, September 23,
2001, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a sudden
illness.
A native of Gwinnett County, he had lived in Hall County most
of his life. He was the son of the late James and Addie Harrison.
He served in the United States Army and was retired from J&J
Food Stores. He was a member of the Mulberry Baptist Church,
where he was a deacon for many years. He was preceded in death
by his wife, Addie Hanes Harrison, and son, Randall Harrison.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Liz and Steve
Poole, Gainesville, and Janice and Tommy Couch, Chestnut Mountain;
one son, Lamar Harrison, Winder; one son and daughter-in-law,
Jimmy and Chiquita Harrison, Flowery Branch; two sisters, Cora

Mary Ellen Bridges.

ATHENS - Mrs. Maude Harris, 78, died Thursday, September 20,
2001, at Winder Health Care.
She was the daughter of the late Melvin R. and Annie Spence Ward.
She was a retired seamstress from Wilkins Industries, where she
worked for more than 30 years. She was a member of West End Baptist
Church where she taught Sunday School for many years and was
a member of the WMU. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Robert M. Harris.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 28,
at Smith Memory Chapel with Dr. Larry Elliott officiating. Burial
will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Bridget
Harris, Athens, and Robbie and Wanda Harris, Winder; one brother,
Thad Ward, Watkinsville; two sisters, Evelyn Ward, Athens, and
Leeanna Junod, Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren, Gary Jr.
and Pam Harris and Jason, Josh and Jill Power.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West End Baptist
Church, 890 Boulevard, Athens, GA., 30601.

MRS. TAYLOR
Retired from hospital
WINDER - Mrs. Anita Louise Tate Taylor, 85, died Monday, September
24, 2001, at Athens Heritage.
She was the daughter of the late Alvin Crawford and Sudie Doster
Tate. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Winder, the
Winder chapter of the Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary. She
was retired from the Winder Hospital. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Mark O. Taylor, and brothers and sisters, Geoffrey
Tate, Paul Tate, H.C. Tate, Edward Tate, Florene Tate and Moates
and Lottie Tate Potts.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 26, at Smith
Funeral Home's Memory Chapel with the Rev. John Talley officiating.
Burial was in White Plains Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include her friend and companion, Edd Doster, Lawrenceville;
two daughters, Sonya Taylor, Winder, and Delores Wages, Hull;
granddaughters and their husbands, Terrie and Kevin Seagraves,
Hull, Tina and Dennis Crawford, Cleveland, Tenn., and Tandy and
Shannon Fortson, Elberton; great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emily
Seagraves, Lindee and Luke Crawford and Ladd Fortson; two sisters-in-law,
Eilene Tate, Jefferson, and Arlene Tate, Atlanta; and many nieces
and nephews.

MR. BRUCE

COMMERCE - Ronny Lee Bruce, 33, died Thursday, September 20,
2001, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Bruce was born in Gwinnett County on August 1, 1968. He was
a son of Carlton and Ellen Fowler Bruce, Commerce.
Mr. Bruce was employed with Seymour's Garage.
Funeral services were held Sunday, September 23, in the chapel
of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Kent Cranford
officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mr. Bruce is survived by his wife, Tammy Wilson Bruce, Commerce;
one daughter, Hillary Wilson, Commerce; and one brother, Ricky
Bruce, Hartwell.

MR. WHITLOCK
Fork lift operator
COMMERCE - Keith Daniel Whitlock, 40, died Monday, September
24, 2001, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Whitlock was born April 26, 1961, in Jackson County, a son
of Sylvia Jean Jordan Whitlock, Commerce, and the late Benson
Whitlock.
He was employed as a fork lift operator for Louisiana Pacific.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, September 25, in the chapel
of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Whitlock is survived by his wife,
Karen Gary Whitlock, Commerce; two brothers, Robert Whitlock,
Comer, and William Dean Whitlock, Commerce; one sister, Donna
Kay Whitlock, Commerce; one step-son, Gary Scales, Commerce;
two grandchildren, Rylee Savannah and Laura Haven; several nieces
and nephews and two great-nieces.

MRS. MARTIN
Elementary school teacher
JEFFERSON - Mrs. Bobbye Freeman Martin, 90, died Monday, September
24, 2001, at Monroe County Hospital after a brief illness.
A native of Madison County, she was born Sept. 13, 1911 and was
the daughter of the late Georgie Bryant Freeman and John Freeman.
She was the owner/operator of a beauty shop and was an elementary
teacher for 17 years in Braselton and North Jackson. She was
a member of Lebanon Methodist Church where she was church treasurer
and a Sunday School teacher. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Elisha Byrd Martin.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Victoria and Jerry
Rape, The Rock, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, September 26, at the chapel
of Evans Funeral Home with the Revs. Howard Banks and Gerry Davis
officiating. Burial was in Lebanon Methodist Church cemetery,
Jefferson.

MRS. SHORE
Homemaker
COMMERCE - Mrs. Vassie Ree Seabolt Shore, 82, died Tuesday, September
25, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens.
Mrs. Shore was born August 25, 1919, in Banks County, a daughter
of the late William A.J. and Mattie Adel Bond Seabolt.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Blacks Creek Baptist
Church. Mrs. Shore was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence
Shore.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 27,
in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the
Revs. Bill Carpenter and Lee Hunter officiating. Burial will
be in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Martin, Commerce; two
brothers, Grady Seabolt and Verner Seabolt, both of Commerce;
one sister, Alma Dickinson, Pottstown, Penn.; one grandson and
one granddaughter.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday
at the funeral home.
