Contact your legislators
Another legislative session is under way and the HOPE scholarship and budget woes are being tossed around the Capitol. Children’s welfare, water resources and crime are other issues that will be debated and acted upon over the next few weeks.
Our leaders need to know where we stand on these important matters. During the coming weeks, we will run articles on what our legislators are doing and what is going on in the General Assembly. We encourage our readers to respond to these issues and others they are concerned about by letting our elected officials know their feelings.
You can contact Banks County’s legislators at the following addresses:

Dolly to host Flameworthy Awards Show
The incomparable Dolly Parton will be at the helm as CMT telecasts country music’s only video music awards, and only fan-voted awards show , the CMT Flameworthy 2004 Video Music Awards.
Parton will host the awards show live from Nashville, Tenn., on Wednesday, April 21, from 8 to 10 p.m. on CMT.
Most awards shows do not offer tickets to the public so this is a rare chance to mingle with your favorite stars. The excitement in the air as the awards are announced is best experienced in person. Since Nashville is only a few hours away, this would make a great road trip. For those who prefer to stay at home, be sure to catch the live performance on CMT.
Tickets for the awards show will be available beginning Saturday, Feb. 14, at all Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at (615) 255-9600, and online at CMT.com and ticketmaster.com.
Since 1968, Parton has become a world-renowned entertainer, penning 3,000 songs and selling more than 100 million albums. She is a member of the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame and has won a multitude of awards for her timeless music. Parton’s 2003 release, “Just Because I’m A Woman: The Songs of Dolly Parton” is a tribute album celebrating her 35 years in country music. Parton recently released a new album of patriotic and spiritual songs called “For God & Country.”
Dolly is one of my favorite country artists because of all that she has done for her childhood hometown in the Great Smoky Mountains. She provides a scholarship for each student who graduates from high school and provides books for every child born in the town. Not many “stars” who have achieved the fame and fortune that Dolly has remembers their hometowns and helps the people in them. Dolly also has a huge amusement park that provides jobs for many people in the Great Smoky Mountains.
The Flameworthy show will also feature a performance by Shania Twain. Her performance last year with Alison Krauss was a crowd favorite.
One of the top selling female artists in history, Twain’s current album “UP!” has sold over 10 million worldwide making her the only artist in history to have three consecutive 10 times platinum certified albums. Moreover, Twain’s previous album “Come On Over” continues to reign as the most successful female solo album of all time with worldwide sales in excess of 34 million. Twain is currently on tour in Europe before she returns to the U.S. for the last leg of her high-energy UP! World Tour.
In its third year, the CMT Flameworthy Video Music Awards has rapidly become a fan favorite. The 2003 premiere is the highest rated telecast in CMT history among viewers ages 18-49. On the 2003 premiere date, more than 8.3 million viewers watched the live awards show and related Flameworthy programs.
