Roy E. Adams
Roy E. Adams, 90, of Commerce, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999,
at Peachtree Plantation.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Adams was born June 27, 1909.
He was a son of the late Callie D. and Addie Smith Adams.
Mr. Adams was a retired farmer and was a member of Erastus Christian
Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Adams Adams.
Funeral services were held Friday, October 8, at Erastus Christian
Church with Brother Jim Lugo and the Rev. Carlton Peters officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Janet Adams,
Commerce; granddaughter and husband, Lisa and Steve Quinn, Jefferson;
granddaughter, Jana Adams, Athens; and three great-grandchildren,
Bryson and Kate Quinn, both of Jefferson, and Donny Quinn, Druid
Hills.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Erastus Christian
Church, 2050 Commerce-Neese Road, Commerce, GA 30529.

Frellie J. Eberhart
Miss Frellie Jurelle Eberhart, of Commerce, died Wednesday, October
6, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native of Jackson County, Miss Eberhart was born February 11,
1916. She was a daughter of Clyde Preston and Ada Lee Mullinax
Eberhart.
Miss Eberhart was retired from First Federal.
Graveside services were held Thursday, October 7, in Jackson
Memorial Gardens, Commerce, with the Rev. Brad Wilson officiating.
Survivors include three sisters, Wilma Blackwell, Homer, Ramelle
Cason, South Pasadena, Fla., and Susie Eberhart, Commerce.

Branson Westmoreland
Branson Westmoreland, 73, of Commerce, died Sunday, October 10,
1999, at his residence following an extended illness.
A native of Commerce, Mr. Westmoreland was born October 8, 1926.
He was a son of the late Edmond Clyde and Ida Black Westmoreland.
Mr. Westmoreland was a former truck driver with Gold Kist.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the chapel of
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Hilton Purvis and
John Perkins officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Eddie Vera Westmoreland; four sons,
Branson Westmoreland, Greenville, S.C., Chris Westmoreland and
Ronson Westmoreland, both of Nicholson, and Wayne Westmoreland,
Commerce; one daughter, Phyllis Westmoreland, Atlanta; two brothers,
Otis Westmoreland, Maysville, and Tillman Westmoreland, Commerce;
two sisters, Mildred McDonald and Dorothy Tatum, both of Commerce;
12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

John B. Minish
John Berry Minish, 55, of Commerce, died Sunday, October 10,
1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center, following an extended
illness.
A native of Jackson County, Mr. Minish was born August 12, 1944.
He was a son of R.F. Minish, Commerce, and the late Cozettie
Faulkner Minish.
Mr. Minish was a retired auto mechanic.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, October 12, in Jackson
Memorial Gardens, Commerce, with the Rev. Dennis Harris officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Janice Minish; one son, Tony Berry,
Commerce; and brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Dot Minish,
Commerce.
Flowers are optional or memorials may be made to Saint Mary's
Hospice.

Dora M. Pethel
Mrs. Dora Mae Simpson Pethel, 75, of Gainesville, died Monday,
October 4, 1999, at Bell-Minor Nursing Home.
A life-long resident of Hall County, Mrs. Pethel was a daughter
of the late Bonnie Mac and Bertha Mae Nix Simpson.
She retired from J.D. Jewell Poultry Company and continued working
in various assisted living facilities as a resident manager.
Mrs. Pethel was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Zelus Dewell
Loggins, and her second husband, Joel Raymond Pethel.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 6, in the chapel
of Little-Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev.
Doyal Conley officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Baptist Church
cemetery.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Gail Loggins Ingram
and Pete Ingram and Sandra Pethel Armour and Steve Armour, all
of Gainesville, and Marcelle Loggins Cail and Robert Cail, Savannah;
son and daughter-in-law, Dennis Ray and Ethelene Loggins, Jefferson;
one brother, Thomas Irvin Simpson, Gainesville; grandchildren,
Kevin Benjamin Ingram, Kerry Lynn Ingram, Victoria Armour and
Stephanie Armour, all of Gainesville, Lisa Loggins Bryant and
Jennifer Loggins, both of Jefferson, and Amy Loggins Cromer,
Commerce; and nine great-grandchildren.

Ruth B. Lum
Mrs. Ruth Buffington Lum, 91, of Commerce, died Wednesday, October
6, 1999, at Alzheimer's Care, Commerce, following an extended
illness.
Mrs. Lum was a longtime resident of Maplewood, N.J., and of Silver
Spring, Md. She was an employee at the Baltimore Sun during the
1920s, when she wrote for the paper.
Mrs. Lum was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Max
Lum Sr.
Graveside services were held Saturday, October 9, in Druid Ridge
Cemetery, Norcross.
Survivors include one son, Max Lum Jr., Davidsonville, Md.; and
three grandchildren.

Nathaniel S. Poole
Nathaniel Spencer "Pete" Poole, of Canton, brother
of Pamela Swinford, Commerce, died Thursday, October 7, 1999.
Mr. Poole was born October 13, 1954.
Memorial services were held Sunday, October 10, in Sosebee Memorial
Chapel, Canton.
Survivors, in addition to his sister, include his wife, Angie
Poole; three daughters, Amanda Poole, Mansfield, and Candiace
Simpkins and Jessica McClure, both of Canton; his mother, Kathryn
L. Taylor, Griffin; four brothers, Daniel Poole and Jeff Taylor,
both of Griffin, David Taylor, LaGrange, and Darrin Poole, Winder;
sister, Beverly Poole Smith, Marietta; and several nieces and
nephews.

George W. Williams
George W. "G.W." Williams, 83, of Toccoa, died Sunday,
October 3, 1999, at Stephens County Hospital.
A native of Gwinnett County, Mr. Williams was born August 7,
1916. He was a son of the late George W. and Nancy Graham Williams.
Mr. Williams was a retiree of Georgia Power Company and was a
member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was also a member of the
220 Fellowship of Ebenezer Baptist Church and a member of the
Ambassadors of Georgia Power Company.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, October 5, in the chapel
of Whitlock Mortuary, Toccoa, with the Revs. Larry King and Jack
Sosby officiating. Burial was in Stephens Memorial Gardens. George
Camp, Ted Johnson, Cliff Collins, Ligon Gibson, Hugh Sharp and
Joe Bell served as pallbearers. Ambassadors of Georgia Power
and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class of Ebenezer Baptist Church
served as honorary pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Belle Gabriel Williams; one
son, Larry Williams, Maysville; three sisters, Thelma Snelson,
Statham, Lois Gabriel, Crawford, and Willie May Gabriel, Auburn;
one brother, George Junior Williams, Jefferson; three grandsons,
Tony Williams, Corpus Christi, Texas, Jonathan Williams, Gainesville,
and Jeremy Williams, Maysville; and several nieces and nephews.

Julia Smith
Miss Julia Smith, 81, of Gainesville, died Sunday, October 3,
1999, at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, following
an extended illness.
Miss Smith was a daughter of the late Robert Henry and Mamie
Brice Smith. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church, where
she faithfully served as the organist for 47 years.
Miss Smith was the granddaughter of Gainesville's first mayor,
William Pugh Smith. Her father was the first fire chief.
Miss Smith was preceded in death by a brother, Paul H. Smith,
two sisters, Verna S. Shivers and Christine S. Bell, and a niece,
Patsy Smith Little.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 6, in the chapel
of Little-Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Revs.
Robert Dunsmore and Don Hand officiating. Burial was in Alta
Vista Cemetery.
Survivors include four nieces, Betty Shivers Brown, Sharpsburg,
Hilda Smith O'Kelley, Maysville, Jean Smith Parker, Blue Ridge,
Va., and Barbara Bell Rainey, Martinsville, Va.; and a number
of great-nieces and nephews.

Mary H. Ward
Mrs. Mary Hale Ward, 86, of Athens, died Saturday, October 9,
1999, at a local hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of Clarke County, Mrs. Ward was
born April 11, 1913. She was a daughter of the late Homer G.
and Effie Bramblett Hale Sr.
Mrs. Ward was retired from Chicopee Manufacturing Company and
was a member of Princeton United Methodist Church. She was preceded
in death by her husband, W. Breece Ward.
Graveside services were held Monday, October 11, in Evergreen
Memorial Park with the Rev. Russell Repetske officiating.
Survivors include four sisters, Emma S. Cofer, Nicholson, and
Ida H. Kilgo, Faye H. Rice and Evelyn H. Fowler, all of Hull;
and three brothers, Col. Homer G. Hale Jr., James E. Hale and
Hugh R. Hale, all of Athens.

Methodist Church, 2390 S. Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA 30606.

Velda L. Ginn
Mrs. Velda Lee Whitsel Ginn, 91, of Comer, died Wednesday, October
6, 1999.
Mrs. Ginn was born in Franklin County, the daughter of the late
William Albert and Martha Moore Whitsel.
She was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Mrs. Ginn was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ginn, four
sons, one daughter and her step-mother, Maggie Hanley Whitsel.
Funeral services were held Thursday, October 7, in the chapel
of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Madison Chapel. Burial was
in the Colliers Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Ginn Callaway, Comer,
and Mary Ann Ginn Goldman, Ninety Six, S.C.; three sons, Bobby
Ginn, Larry Ginn and Hal Ginn, all of Commerce; four sisters,
Mary Lunsford and Ellie Jordan, both of Royston, Dot Brawner,
Commerce, and Susie Garrett, Pelzer, S.C.; 30 grandchildren and
a large number of great-grandchildren.
