FRIDAY, MAY 21 - SATURDAY, MAY 22
The day finally arrived. Everything had been planned, guessed at, second guessed at and it was time to go. We left on Friday afternoon, May 19, for the Atlanta airport to catch a 6 p.m. flight to Las Vegas, Nevada. There would be a brief layover in Denver before getting into Las Vegas late. We caught a taxi to the Hawthorne Suites, which Arizona River Runners had suggested. There, we retrieved our shipped boxes of equipment and hauled everything to our room. Since it was so late, we all turned in.

Because of the time difference (three hours), we were up and ready to go early - by Las Vegas standards anyway. We ate breakfast at Hawthorn because it was included in the rack rate, and it wasn't too bad. Afterward, we hiked down the street to see the sights, avoiding the sites that weren't fit to see. We rode the roller coasters, ate lunch at "Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville" and returned to the hotel just after lunch. The boys were ready to hit the swimming pool and we spent most of the afternoon sitting by the pool at the hotel. When Brian and I first got in the pool, we both noted how cold the water was. That temperature observation was to be a point of reference later after we returned from a week on the 50-degree Colorado river. After a quick sub-par supper at the nearby San Remo Buffet, we turned in early, in anticipation of the upcoming trip.
