MCHS boys remain unscathed in subregion

The Madison County boys’ tennis team (5-1, 3-0) made quick work of Habersham Central Tuesday, winning four of five positions in straight sets in a 5-0 victory to remain unbeaten in subregion play.


No. 2 singles player Jeffrey Branson won a three-set match, drawing praise from coach Keith Strickland.
“Jeffrey Branson continues to impress with his focus and drive in his matches,” he said.

Prior to that, Madison County won 5-0 Friday over an undermanned Cedar Shoals squad that played sans a no. 2 doubles team.

A day earlier, the Madison County boys beat Clarke Central 4-1 (March 4) in blustery conditions in winning their subregion opener.

The Red Raiders’ lone loss came at no. 1 singles where Trey Morris played fell to Josh Smith, a highly-touted exchange student from Australia. Smith ranked in the top 5 in Australia before moving to Athens last season.
“We had good play from all of our other singles and doubles positions,” Strickland said.

The coach noted that no. 3 singles player Blaise Boleman played well after getting off to a slow start.

Before that, the Red Raiders fell to Morgan County 3-2 last Wednesday (March 3), with Morris and Boleman picking up victories.

“Playing a team like Morgan County, who is always strong, early in the season gives ours players some idea about how hard they need to work,” Strickland said.
