Commerce’s boys’ and’ girls track teams may have the week off from competition, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be taking it easy.
With a relatively clear weather forecast, coaches Pam Canup and Kendall Love expect to get in a lot of practice for the coming meets.
“Hopefully, this is a good week to get some work done,” said Canup.
Both the Tigers and Lady Tigers head to Habersham Central Monday for a 4:15 meet.
Last week the teams were rained out on Thursday from competition at North Oconee. At press time a date for a makeup meet had not been announced.
Last Tuesday the Commerce girls visited Jefferson to face the Lady Dragons and Banks County’s Lady Leopards in a girls’ only meet.
Commerce scored 33 points competing in 12 of 16 events. Jefferson scored 101 points across 16 events and Banks County scored 29 points from 13 of 16 events.
The Lady Tigers had several first-place finishers.
Drea Mathis ran a 13.90 to beat out three Jefferson runners in the 100-meter dash. Mathis also won third in the high jump.
Vanessa Candler added two individual first-place medals with a 28.10 in the 200m dash and a 1:04.67 in the 400m dash.
Chandler, along with Erica Greene, Alexis Knox and SaQuavia Varnum won the 4x100m relay, completing the run in 53.71.
Varnum went on to take second in the shot put while Greene placed third in the triple jump, ahead of Allie Morgan at fourth.
Morgan finished third in the long jump.
In the high jump, Commerce’s Trumeshia Carruth placed fourth. Jordan Lord finished third in the discus.
