An employee of a local auto parts store could face felony theft by taking charges, according to an incident report filed last week by the Commerce Police Department.
The report said an officer talked with a loss prevention manager for AutoZone, who said he was investigating an employee of the Homer Road store for stealing merchandise.
The suspect, a 26-year-old Latino male, allegedly stole $613 in merchandise over a year, “giving away merchandise to customers because he felt sorry for them.”
The theft was discovered when the suspect purchased a soft drink with rewards points from a store loyalty card. The company’s loss prevention manager said the employee would scan the cards when someone made a purchase of over $20 and had admitted stealing air filters, candy bars, soft drinks, oil and other merchandise.
The report said that the case would be turned over to the police department investigators.
