Barrow County Board of Commissioners Chairman Danny Yearwood has scheduled a called meeting of the board Tuesday to discuss a financial cost-reduction plan for fiscal year 2009. The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. in the board’s meeting room in the county annex building on East Broad Street in Winder.

An electrical short at Auburn Elementary School Thursday night damaged the reception area of the administrative offices. “When the sprinkler system came on, the fire alarm went off around midnight and alerted the fire department, and they responded along with us,” said Auburn Police Chief Frederick Brown. A former teacher in Barrow County was sworn in last week as governor of North Carolina. Gov. Beverly M. Perdue was a substitute kindergarten teacher in 1970-71 in Winder, according to her resume.
