Veteran Winder-Barrow High School boys basketball coach Eli Connell suddenly stepped down from his position this week, the Barrow Journal confirmed Wednesday morning. Devan Espinosa was the top dog for the Winder-Barrow High School wrestling program this season. The 125-pound competitor earned a top eight finish at the Class AAAA state meet last week at the Gwinnett Arena. Winder police from Feb. 16-23 arrested 23 people – nine of them for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Wreck at school sends several to hospital; three die in wrecks this week

A three-vehicle wreck Wednesday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m. near Yargo Elementary School sent several people to area hospitals. One of the vehicles involved was a van reportedly transporting children. Meanwhile, three Barrow County people were killed this week in area wrecks. County collects nearly $200,000 in back taxes since last week

Delinquent taxpayers have begun responding to the 4,700 tax-lien notices they received from Barrow County’s tax commissioner last Friday. Sales tax revenues fall

Sales tax collections in Jackson County for 2008 were down nine percent over the year before. According to county officials, Jackson finished the year with $5.7 million in Local Option Sales Tax collections compared to $6.3 the year before. The difference was $568,000 on the year.
