An early morning fire destroyed a home in Jefferson Wednesday, but the home’s occupants escaped without injury. The home of Bruce and Tara Simonton on Brookside Drive off of Westmoreland Ave. reportedly caught on fire around 3 a.m. A fire alarm reportedly alerted the home’s two occupants and they were able to get out quickly. Two people, including the wife of Jackson County Tax Commissioner Don Elrod, were injured around 2 p.m. Monday afternoon in a head on crash on Hwy. 15, the Jefferson-Commerce Road. Sheriff's office searching for escaped inmate

An inmate who escaped from a Gwinnett County facility in September has been spotted in Jackson County and law enforcement officers are searching for him.
