Unemployment up in Jackson, down in Barrow

Unemployment rates in Barrow and Jackson counties remained above 10 percent in May, but Barrow had some improvement in its standing. The unemployment rate in Barrow fell .1 points to 10 percent from April’s 10.1. May’s rate in Barrow was identical to May 2009 numbers. Barrow County firefighters responded to several fires over the weekend including one caused by a lightning strike. Firefighters were dispatched to a Commons Road residence just before 9 p.m. on June 25. First arriving firefighters found light smoke in the residence. An intoxicated man said he panicked when he saw a police car and only sped away because he was trying to make it home. Steven Todd Simpson, 23, of 1508 Cronic Town Road in Auburn, was traveling on Mount Moriah Road when he drove off the edge of the roadway. One man is dead and two other victims remain hospitalized after a Tuesday evening shooting in Auburn. An Auburn woman said she meant her boyfriend no harm when she pursued him in her pickup truck.
