An investigation into the cause of a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office propane-fueled car explosion was caused by “manual tampering” of a safety device on the vehicle and an improper manipulation of a fitting during maintenance, officials said Thursday. A Jackson County sheriff's deputy was injured Monday after his propane-fueled vehicle exploded while he was responding to a call. Around 6:30 a.m. JCSO Deputy Gary Cox was responding to a call at Hwy. 82 North of Jefferson. As he lit a cigarette, the vehicle burst into flames. Governor to be at Systemax grand opening

Gov. Sonny Perdue will be in Jefferson Monday for the grand opening of Systemax, an electronics distribution center that brought 400 jobs to the area. An Auburn man was less than appreciative when a deputy advised he was cutting him a break on a speeding ticket. Michael Peery, 44, of 365 Browns Bridge Road in Auburn, was stopped on Hwy. 316 after a deputy clocked him traveling 85 mph in a 65 mph zone.
