Barrow’s graduation rates see decrease

Barrow County Schools bucked a state-wide trend in 2010 by graduating fewer students than in 2009. While the state’s graduation rate of 80.8 percent crept over 80 percent for the first time ever, the percentage of seniors who graduated from Apalachee and Winder-Barrow High schools was 74.7 percent, down from 76.5 the previous year. ‘Vapor cover’ removal leads to damage

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has found out what when horribly wrong last week when a propane tank exploded inside the trunk of a deputy’s car. Man stabbed during brawl after assaulting child

Four people were jailed after an Oct. 23 domestic dispute ended with a stabbing. Deputies were called to an Apalachee Ridge Road address after Laren Patrick Parker, 27, of 480 Apalachee Ridge Road in Auburn, allegedly assaulted a juvenile during a drunken rage. The Red Cross will hold a blood drive on Friday, Nov. 5, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Barrow Regional Medical Center, located at 316 North Broad Street, Winder. WBHS student charged after bringing gun on campus

A freshman at Winder-Barrow High School is facing criminal charges after bringing a handgun on campus last week. WBHS principal Al Darby said a student at the school alerted officials that the juvenile male had a handgun in his possession. The Town of Carl approved its Fiscal Year 2011 budget Thursday night, breaking even on revenue and expenses. The town expects to receive $60,000 in the coming year and expects to spend the same.
