Barrow’s graduation rates see decrease

Barrow County Schools bucked a state-wide trend in 2010 by graduating fewer students than in 2009. While the state’s graduation rate of 80.8 percent crept over 80 percent for the first time ever, the percentage of seniors who graduated from Apalachee and Winder-Barrow High schools was 74.7 percent, down from 76.5 the previous year. ‘Vapor cover’ removal leads to damage

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has found out what when horribly wrong last week when a propane tank exploded inside the trunk of a deputy’s car. Chief deputy David Cochran said a “vapor cover” on the exterior of the tanks was inadvertently removed, possibly during routine maintenance. That cover is a safety device that would have ... Man stabbed during brawl after assaulting child

Four people were jailed after an Oct. 23 domestic dispute ended with a stabbing. Deputies were called to an Apalachee Ridge Road address after Laren Patrick Parker, 27, of 480 Apalachee Ridge Road in Auburn, allegedly assaulted a juvenile during a drunken rage. Woman arrested after allegedly faking overdose

A Danielsville woman was taken to jail recently after officers and EMS were summoned to an Audie Porterfield residence in reference to a possible overdose. The Commerce cross country teams wrapped up their season last Thursday in the 8-A region meet at Athens Academy. The East Jackson cross country teams wrapped up their region schedule over the weekend, competing in the 8-AA region championship meet at Crow’s Lake in Jefferson.
