Law enforcement officers in Barrow County are on the lookout for the suspect in the killing of one Athens policeman and the critical wounding of a second officer. Officers in NEGA are looking for Jamie Hood, 33, Winterville who is reportedly driving a silver GEO Prism with a tag of 375GHX. Hood is described at 5'9" black male with light skin. ... Man gets 20 years for child rape

A Barrow County man was sentenced in Superior Court last week to 20 years in prison for the rape of a child. Ruben Mercado was convicted on six counts of aggravated sodomy, two counts rape, three counts child molestation, and first degree cruelty to children. A house at 733 Harrison Mill Road was destroyed by fire Sunday night, according to Barrow County Emergency Services. Several fires and a school bus wreck dominated calls to Barrow County Emergency Services during the last week.
