The 2011 8th grade writing test in January showed that students in Kings Bridge Middle School continued to have academic struggles. The school's 28.8 percent failure rate on the writing test was the worst in Jackson County and among the worst in the state. Winder Police Chief Dennis Dorsey said he approves of merging the department’s dispatch center with Barrow County’s E-911 Center if it benefits the citizens of Winder. Abused, neglected dog has new life

A severely emaciated dog that was turned in to the Madison-Oglethorpe Animal Shelter by his owner in January has been adopted into a new home, shelter officials report. Barrow County governing provisions available online

As a citizens' committee studies possible changes to the Barrow County government structure, citizens can get more info about the county structure online.


Barrow County was created on July 7, 1914 by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. That original legislation has been amended multiple times over the past century to establish the county’s current form of government.


To read the provisions that are the subject of the ongoing review, go online to www.municode.com and search the “Municode Library” for Barrow County’s Code of Ordinances.


The applicable provisions are under “Part 1 – Special Acts of the General Assembly.”


Of particular importance are those that address the balance of power between the BOC and the chairman.


The powers and duties of the board of commissioners are in Section 2.


The powers and duties of the BOC chairman are in Section 7.


Local residents without Internet access may access the document online at any public library.
