Tigers pick up two region wins; focus shifts to finishing games

The Commerce boys’ basketball team went 2-1 last week against teams from region 8-A, positioning themselves for a possible number-two-seed in the region tournament. Tigers take third at state duals

The Commerce Tigers earned a third-place finish last weekend at the GHSA class-A state wrestling duals in Macon. Commerce advanced to the semifinals after handily beating Eagles Landing Christian 52-17 in its first bout of the tournament. The Commerce girls’ basketball team picked up a win on Tuesday, Jan. 8, when the Tigers defeated Pinecrest Academy. The Lady Tigers jumped out to a commanding 16-5 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. Commerce went on to outscore the Paladins in every quarter, sealing a 53-26 victory. BOE sets 2013-2014 calendar

The Jackson County Board of Education approved a school calendar for the 2013-2014 school year at its meeting Monday night. Students will begin classes on Aug. 8 with teachers starting on Aug. 1 for preplanning. The last day of classes will be May 23, 2014. Fugitive arrested by sheriff’s office

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office arrested a fugitive on Tuesday who was wanted on armed robbery charges. James Alvin Pressley, 32, Pendergrass, was arrested in Commerce after being located by an alert off-duty deputy who called for on-duty deputies to make the arrest. A Winder man fatally shot himself following a lengthy standoff with Barrow County law enforcement and SWAT officials earlier this week.
