Mike Murphy of Winder became the first repeat winner of the Barrow Journal football picker contest by correctly forecasting 11 of 12 games.
Murphy’s lone miss was Middle Tennessee’s upset win against Georgia Tech. Murphy predicted 48 points would be scored in the tiebreaker game between Bethlehem Christian Academy and David Emanuel. The Eagles defeated the Knights 20-12 for a total of 32.
Reed Sheats also picked 11 games correctly but was further off on the tiebreaker prediction (60).
Contestants just behind with 10 correct picks included Mary Page, Louise Etheridge, Mike Duane, Lisa Freeman, Rebecca Freeman, Nathan Freeman, Rory Sheats, Aaron Cooper, Holly Sheats, Tim Husk, Sarah Garrett, Larry Black, Pam Yarbrough, Dwight Barnes and John Landers.
Thirteen additional contestants correctly predicted nine games while nine contestants had eight games correct.
See page 5B in the Oct. 3 edition for the new football contest with a new batch of games. The winner earns a $50 prize each week for his or her efforts.
