Battle of Barrow Notebook:
With Friday’s win, the Apalachee High School seniors made it 4-for-4 against Winder-Barrow High School.
The Wildcats have scored 40 or more points in four of the last five meetings with the Bulldoggs and have outscored their county and region rival 224-40.
“Friday was a good win,” said AHS defensive coordinator Matt Sorrells. “I enjoyed seeing our seniors go out that way. I was really surprised to see Winder-Barrow come out in an unbalanced power I set and stay in it for most of the game. That was the first time we had seen that from them all year. After we were able to get everyone on the same page as to where we needed to line up, what we needed to read and where to fit, I thought we really controlled the line of scrimmage and they were not able to spring any long runs.”
It was another big night for the AHS offense as well.
“We had a few miscues, but overall we were thrilled with our performance,” said Wildcat offensive coordinator Joel Miller. “I am so happy to see our seniors get a chance to enjoy a win over their rivals in their last game. It will be a memory that will stay with them forever.”
•By the numbers: Apalachee senior Eric Tanner capped his final season with the Wildcats surpassing 1,000 yards.
It only took Zay Henry five attempts to score two touchdowns Friday night.
Clint Ashe, another AHS senior, went out in style with 133 yards through the air.
•Good sign: With several minutes still remaining in the contest, AHS head Shane Davis told his assistants in the press box to make their way to the sidelines. With the game in hand, the Wildcat coaches no longer needed the view from up top. Miller sent the plays in from the sideline for the remainder of the game as AHS coaches gave several players game action.
Assistant coach Mark Moore also is in the pressbox on Friday nights for the Wildcats.
•More numbers: Monterian Smith, who joined the AHS team mid-way through his senior year, finished Friday’s game with 52 yards on eight carries.
Chandon Sullivan had 56 yards for WBHS.
Memorable victory for AHS seniors
