Winder-Barrow High School Lady Bulldogg coach Brandon Thomas said recently the attitude of his players was still positive despite the struggle to post a win.
That positive outlook paid off during the Longhorn Christmas Tournament hosted by Lanier High School last week as the WBHS girls earned their initial win of the 2012-2013 season. The Lady Bulldoggs defeated East Jackson 45-26 Friday.
The 45 points was a season high for WBHS, who has a young team comprised primarily of sophomores.
Adrianna Davis scored 10 points to lead the Lady Bulldoggs along with freshman Tiera Mayweather, who previously had been competing on the junior varsity.
WBHS opened the tournament with a close 38-32 loss to host Lanier. Following Friday’s win against East Jackson, the Lady Bulldoggs fell to Whitewater 46-32. Mayweather led the team with 12 points while Shakari Smith and Davis both finished with six.
“Our scoring average for the tournament was 36 points a game,” Thomas said. “We entered scoring 25 points a game. Hopefully, we can keep improving in that area. Whitewater has a winning record and we were in the game for the most part with them.”
The WBHS boys opened play in the tournament with a 69-48 loss to Lanier before rebounding to defeat Providence 50-40.
The WBHS teams will return to action Friday against Walnut Grove at home and against Monroe Area Saturday, also at home. Varsity games begin at 6 p.m.
