A Hull man was arrested recently after he called 9-1-1 while intoxicated to see if the sheriff’s office could do something about his girlfriend spending his money on gambling.
Jimmy Ray Cowart, 47, 77 Sweet Gum Alley, was charged with unlawful conduct during a 911 call.
According to the incident report, Cowart called 9-1-1 on Dec. 27 saying he wanted someone to do something about his girlfriend spending his money. Cowart, whose voice was slurred as if he had been drinking, said his girlfriend continuously spends the money he gives her on gambling. Deputy Alan Stratton, who took the call, told the man that he would have to stop giving her his money for gambling and that he did not need to contact 9-1-1 while intoxicated because calling 9-1-1 was for medical and criminal calls. Cowart was interrupted by a man in the background telling him he did not need to be driving that night because he was drunk. He told Stratton the man in the background was his father and began to tell Stratton about his girlfriend again. Stratton told Cowart to call an investigator during office hours and not to call 9-1-1 again and hung up.
Five minutes later, Cowart called 9-1-1 again and repeated his problem with his girlfriend. Stratton asked to speak to his father and explained that his son was going to be arrested if he called 9-1-1 again. Stratton then talked to Cowart again and told him to go to bed. At this point, Cowart began to curse Stratton, who told him he was on his way to arrest him. He was met at the residence by Cowart’s father, and could hear Cowart in the background yelling, “Here I am!” He was handcuffed and taken to jail. On the way, he became disorderly and threatened Stratton and his family members while banging his left shoulder against the rear door.
