With the area tournament approaching, the Winder-Barrow High School wrestling team has been enjoying mat success of late.
The team recently defeated Oconee County 48-31 with Austin Iler, Landon McFarland, Stephen Head, Dalton Crowe, Kris Colby, Austin Stewart and Agustin Salas earning pins.
Gavin Pieniaszek won by forfeit.
The Mat Bulldoggs also defeated Monroe Area 51-30 as Iller, McFarland, Head, Colby and Stewart won by pin. Taylor Smith, Nick Tapplin and Austin Gilleland won by forfeit.
Also in recent action, WBHS defeated Salem 66-18. The win was a quality showing against an area foe.
Iller, McFarland, Gilleland, Head, Crowe, Colby and Stewart won by pin while Smith, Pieniaszek, Tapplin and Salas picked up points via forfeit.
In action Jan. 16, WBHS fell 48-35 to Dacula. Iller, McFarland, Gilleland, Head, Colby and Stewart won by pin.
The Mat Bulldoggs also lost a close 39-30 match to Mill Creek despite pins by Iller, Head, Colby, Stewart and Salas.
WBHS also competed in the East Metro Tournament Saturday at Alcovy High School in Covington.
“We had a decent weekend,” coach Jason Austin said. “We had some injuries so we had some holes in our lineup.”
Colby placed third at 195 and Salas placed fifth at 285.
“Everyone did some great things,” Austin said. “It was a good tune up tournament for area in two weeks.”
WBHS will compete at the Clarke Central Gladiator Duals Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
